Santa Anita for Friday 3 April 2015

I like the card as you can tell by the clarity ratings.  Santa Anita Derby tomorrow!

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

6  Sea John's Spirit   laid up since May and returns up for a tag.......stout preparatory works for this Ellis seven year old suggest she is more than ready and she seems spotted well at the $32K claiming level

3  Dissension   Truman is an impressive 6 for 19 at the SA meeting and historically is strong 3rd out after a layoff and he is also strong 1st out following a claim.....that is the case for both today

5  Enduring Erin   seems best on dirt and it showed in his last which was his 1st race on it since winning at Haw in April 2014

race 2    average clarity

2  Private Marina   both route races with the blinkers on are par like for today's level......Chew seems to have spotted his filly realistically to win........continues to train like a filly in good shape

4  Light Striker    Ellis and company appear to have made a bad claim here so they wisely drop their new shooter to the lowest available level of competition.......before........ the physical troubles really set in for this diminishing four year old filly

6  Kat's Hurricane    blinkers on today and the recent drills are somewhat better.......1 for 1 at a route........0 for 4 sprinting

race 3    average clarity

5  Te Rapa   somewhat low % trainer but not 2nd out after layoffs.......last sure appeared like a needed race.......ran wide throughout making little effort to get on over to the inside.......2nd out after the layoff and drops a level

4  Fast Track   Molly Pearson does a decent job when shipping into S Cal........and........she seems to mean business with this eight year old placing him to win by risking losing him at the claiming box......but why not as the purses here are so much larger than in Az and he is 8 years of age after all

2  Los Bambinos   improved work tab lately.......seems likely to sit close to the front in a race that doesn't have much early speed in it

7  Press Baron   retains Bejarano 1st off of the Moger claim.......seems best at today's distnce.....still.......needs a rebound of sorts

race 4    above average clarity

5  Nowalking   very sharp work regiment in preparation for this consistent off pace route runner who should appreciate the small field and the lack of traffic that it likely will bring when the race gets serious

2  Solomon Northup   very strong route grass in his 2nd start in the USA breaking tardy and running wide and still only losing by a neck.......if he can show that "run" on the conventional dirt this afternoon he is the one to overcome........pedigree to handle real dirt isn't too bad

3  Something Awesome     strong works on the dirt.......finally gets to run on it following 2 grass races.....went off as the favorite on the grass in last

race 5   average clarity

8  Eddie's First   just snatched at the claiming box by Peter Miller and the 1st thing that he does with his new shooter is have him gelded.......seems to have done some good as he just popped a solid bullet work at Slr......."B game" (kind of like his last) fits........"A game" would make him one tough cookie.......seems likely he will produce a B+ or better effort off of the recent improved work

4  Oligarch   another running 1st off of the claim......new trainer Powell has won with 2 of 9 1st following a claim and he might make it 3 for 10 as he just got his newbie to work 58:1 (best of 102) .......last two dirt races are par or better.......handles the turf just fine.......same or more seem to be in the cards for today

1  Gab Power   in good form.......and considering his lack of any early speed he's not really a bad sprinter.......only SA hill race is fine

6  Royal F J   interesting Ellis claim of an eight year old who sure is familiar with the SA hill grass course......defintely a dangerous proven hill horse and with a stout trainer now

Long-shot consideration:   2  Kingpin Ryno   set an incredible pace at 1 1/8th one week ago......major league wake-up........back in one week.......might be a tough speed horse down the hill this afternoon.....has won once the hill in 3 starts on it

race 6    average clarity

5  Warren's Wesley   when last seen in mid Jan this six year old was on the right end of the learning curve........returns off of the 2 1/2 month break with seemingly the best a.m. work of his career.......and his trainer sees fit to put him up in claiming........obviously I believe this Gutierrez runner is feeling awfully good

7  Moonlight Meeting   just won a fast heat of mdn20K runners.......should be a major player if he can duplicate the effort this afternoon......good sign that Desormeaux sticks with the horse

4  Molten Image   strong race in latest somewhat hidden by a wide trip........same effort with a cleaner trip fits

2  City State   best ever and a fit here is his race 2 back.......seems better in sprints.......6F today

race 7    average clarity

7  Meeting Waters   very rare for Cecil to use Bejarano......also rare for Ben to have a Euro invader all wound up and ready to roll for his/her U S of A debut.......works strongly hint the trainer does this time.........filly had 2 wins and 4 close 2nd's in her last 7 in GB

4  Smooth It   (4 2 2 0) on the grass since O'Neill put the blinkers on this four year old filly.........seems likely to get a close up ground saving trip at least thru turn 1.....and that is most of the battle

6  Famous Alice   blinkers are being removed for today.......firm turf record with the blinkers off running 1 mile or less is (5 2 3 0).....that'll do

3  Kool Kat   all 3 races on the SA hill fit to some degree.......switch in jocks to Trujillo who won for Cassidy with his lone mount for him over the last 2 months

race 8    above average clarity

8  Visibility    exits a fast heat of mc 20K sprinters where this fellow managed 2nd despite a tardy start and running a touch wide..........1st at a route but bred OK to get the distance of one mile

7  Commander Lute   lone race back in January of 2014 is a so so MSW effort..........buts returns in a bottom mc affair and with a very solid work regiment to be ready and ready to handle a route..........these kind for Baffert are usually good for 1 to 3 healthy efforts before having physical troubles......the kind you can bet but would be unwise to claim

1  Blame It On Tekela   very slow time in latest.......but.........also a very bad trip for this five year old gelding who was way too wide on a day the rail was biased.......would have won for fun if he had found the inside

9  Burning   turf tightener in latest.......might feel better than usual for today's route dirt race

10  Jacob's Blubyrd   broke a little slow and still pressed a decent pace in mc debut.........so might clear here and be loose......if so danger city

3  Salt of the Earth   late runner has the best rider on his back in some time......still that rider is only 5% at the meeting......doubt a winner.......but piece of the pie isn't impossible
