Santa Anita for Sunday 7 June 2015

Decent looking card this afternoon takes some of the hangover away from such a exciting (and somewhat exhausting) and important day in Thoroughbred Racing!

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

2  Worldwide   Ellis is not usually in a rush with his 1st timers .....thus his weak stats with 1st timers....but.....this colt has put in plenty of furlongs of work and finished with 3 gates works.....believe this time Ellis is ready with his debut runner

4  London Legacy   solid in last wide up near the front........cut back of one furlong  is a plus.....retains top jock.....trainer sure could use a win

1  Contemplate   flashed decent early speed in his MSW debut and tired in the late stages......3 useful drills since.........cut back of a furlong seems like a good thing

3  Heavenly Haze    good enough work regiment for this Carla Gaines 1ster to possibly be meant and ready in his MSW debut

race 2    average clarity

3  Jan's Spirit   exits a very fast heat where this Baltas filly dueled and still held 2nd........should beat these if she repeats the effort.....bit concerned that Baltas and company step her down a notch instead of up.......but then again he is on top of the trainer standings and likely wants to stay there

2  Pocketfullofgreen   on the improve with every start........continues to train like a happy healthy individual.......and that is a dangerous proposition right now with the red-hot D'Amato barn

6  Miz Penelope   has fired to some degree in all three lifetime races on main track surfaces......lone lifetime win came turf to dirt.....turf in last

4  Sweet Silver    improving and might improve again.......placed this low selection wise because her running lines hint she will flatten at 6 1/2F

race 3    average clarity

2  Cyrus Alexander   very stout route races since the blinkers were added 3 races back........and this colt hasn't missed a beat since his last which was his best to date.......Hollendorfer is starting to heat things up......same or better today seems likely

5  Prospect Park   fell off some in latest.......races two and three back are very strong........enough time off to muscle up and mount a rebound

3  Cross the Line   freshened up and dangerous early speed.........likely will attempt to get a jump on the field and wire

race 4    average clarity

8  Hard Night's Day   powerful vastly improved effort in latest......3 sizzling 4F works since......semi-hot trainer in Jerry Hollendorfer........might be very tough to overcome if she runs as well on the turf today as she did on the dirt in her last

2  Half Past Midnight   bred awfully well for the grass......with that in mind she might have always been pointed for today by D'Amato who is very solid 1st ever on the grass........dirt sprint - dirt sprint - turf route scenario for 3rd lifetime start

9  Gentle Humor    9-1 in a 7 horse field in debut suggests the race was a tune-up and not a bad one at that........turf and two turns today.......right up R. Mandella's alley

5  Margaret Reay   finally back to a MSW race off of the long layoff......trainer has been chilly......tough call if this filly needs a race or not

Long-shot consideration:   1  Entebbe   believe running into shape on the dirt because she is bred very nicely for the turf......just worked an eye-popping bullet 5/8ths work......she seems meant and ready for her 1st grass race and at a handsome price

race 5   above average clarity

4  Queen of the Hill   by far at her best at SA (12 5 3 1)......and her last three efforts fit solidly her.....reassuring 5F work put in at Slr one week rider/trainer combo

5  Sugar Spice   lead type only and she has led in 8 of her last 10......right guy for the job in Martin Pedroza aboard

3  Missdang Sally   cheap but consistent........invades from GG........seems best at today's abbreviated sprint distance

2  A P Pepper    doubt a winner.....basically best of what's left

race 6    average clarity

5  Scooter Bird   runs very well fresh which obviously Sadler is aware of and he sure has put a strong work series into his 5-year-old mare to have her ready for today's marathon......and her efforts running at 11 or 12 furlongs are decent

1  Gas Total    can't figure out why this mare is not staying on the dirt for Mandella following a 2nd in a Grade 1 on it........and in her previous dirt race (which was in 2013 in ARG) she won by 8.....she's only 2 for 21 on the sod......but I respect R Mandella as much as any trainer in the U S of A so I still rate her as being......very dangerous today

2  Gaga A   laid up invader from France owns a pedigree that screams 'marathon"......and she to training well enough to possibly be ready off of the bench

7  Halljoy   acts like......and is if the further she runs the better.......and the longest race of her career is today

race 7    above average clarity

8  Water Issues    trainer trying to dig out of a slump is starting to find the winners circle of late and drops this filly to a level she the fact Baze stays up as it suggest's she has remained in decent physical condition if

9  Lust for Life   consistent sort retains the meets top gun and is 1 for 1 at the somewhat speciality distance od 7F........trainer is having a good meeting including a win yesterday

6  Sensational Nikki   last two races aren't bad but likely needs more today to get to the winners circle......3rd run after a layoff for a sharp conditioner.......might be up to more today

2  Pay the Debt   last was decent and today we get a rider upgrade......not totally out of this

race 8    average clarity

1  Cardiac   three year old has had some tough trips....3 of his last 4 fit solidly here.....seems quite formidable here with a decent trip provided he can handle his 4th race in 6 weeks

9  Unusually Green   might be feeling awfully good coming off a totally pace-less race where he was still able to put in an impressive late run.....both split wise and visually......continues to train like a happy and healthy individual

7  Know Plans   D'Amato is very dangerous 3rd out after layoffs with the sprint-sprint-route maneuver......and he puts up one of his top go to guys for the 1st time today

5  Turn On the Pumps    consistent sort but quite the jock gets a shot

Long-shot consideration:   8  Lindante   race 2 back at today's one mile turf distance is his lifetime best and disguised by not the best of trips........has a shot if he rebounds and of course gets a decent ride

race 9    below average clarity

5  Anniaquam   tepid top pick woke up in her 2nd lifetime start 1st time on Lasix........cut back of 1/2 furlong appears to be a plus......but maybe most importantly Drysdale has won with his last 1/2 dozen MSW to maiden claiming

4  Designated Royalty   works for this three-year old 1st timer are solid for the level even by Bruce Headley standards who pushes them hard in the a.m.......seems like a dangerous debut runner

2  Bert's Baby    back to 5 1/2 furlongs which makes this filly quite a bit more dangerous......not out of this by any means

8  Hi Fever   trained like a good one......then 4 weeks off.....only  two so so works since the break.........not a good sign but....still not impossible

1  Lucky Heat   might be closing late as works aren't fast but numerous suggesting she has endurance put into her but not speed

9  Papa's Last   works hint she mint be a ready to roll 1st timer but trainer has had a dull year....can't remember the last time Jones was on a roll
