Santa Anita for Sunday 21 June 2015 – Happy Fathers Day to all you Dads!

I am saddened to inform you that my friend and assistant handicapper for The Racing Digest, David Gordon, passed away Wednesday. He was one great guy. My heart goes out to his family as 56 is far too young to leave this earth. David Gordon was a kind man who was an accomplished actuary by profession but also the best "part-time" handicapper I have ever known. I always felt as if he would easily surpass my handicapping prowess if he was able to put in as much time as I do. Dave was a state chess champion and competed with many successes at the national level in Bridge tournaments. He was one sharp guy to say the least. I will miss him dearly but I will always cherish the many discussions we had about Thoroughbred racing and other topics.

race 1    average clarity

7  Heat Du Jour   has been facing better and now finds a spot where her figs/efforts stand out........and we go from a cold jock to a hot one

2  Jade With Envy   very consistent around two turns and best at one mile........ironically swaps jocks with our top choice........Nakatani is due to wake up

1  Chokecherry Mary   on a rebound of sorts.......she owns some back numbers that are as good as our top pick.....very dangerous if she continues to move forward today

3  Toppers Sunshine   best sitting close early but no shot to do that in last two with compromised starts.......dangerous speed if Perez breaks her cleanly today

race 2    average clarity

4  Ranulf   improving sort and today he gets to compete at his favorite distance (5 for 9)......just claimed by Glatt who is solid 1st following a claim and he seems to have lucked out getting a good spot for a late runner

1  Califo Cat   working terrifically at GG and like our top choice is at his best at 6 panels ( 5 for 11).......has something to prove on conventional dirt but his only race on it isn't bad......he stated above a good spot for a closer

2  Maximinus   major wake up in last and Baltas steps him up because of it......excellent histaory when loose on the lead (4 2 2 0) but he was also able to run 2nd pressing the pace 2 back

5  The Cleaners   need to lead type was just claimed and Palma sees fit to put the bug boy up in hopes that his 7 lbs off will aid him in grabbing a louse lead

race 3    average clarity

3  Lucky Views   not exactly bred well for the distance but sure runs like the 1 1/4 will be to his liking......2 for 2 at 1 1/8th and won both by daylight opening up even more passed the wire

5  Wanstead Gardens   runs all day long so the 10 furlongs is a plus.....should come roaring home late once again.....does tend to hang some

6  Neveradoubt   finally gets to run back in relatively short rest for the 1st time in his career.......likely feeling good.......the distance is a ? mark for this California bred

1  Alcott   tough to judge this overseas invader.....more of a defensive move than anything else placing him as our 4th pick......trainer has won with 1 his last 2 1st out shippers to the USA

race 4    average clarity

3  Dubdubwatson   best early speed in the field and the most impressive preparatory work......ex-pinhooker Brocklebank sure is off to a great start as a trainer

4  Found Money   very strong debut running wide and doing so up on the pace........would have been top choice if that effort wasn't run on an off track

5  Swiss Minister   decent MSW breaking win his debut.....works since hint the effort muscled him up like only a race can do sometimes.......and look who rides today

1  Mrazek   needs more than his MSW debut but he did win very easily.....might feel really good coming off such a stress free effort

race 5   average clarity

8  Causeway Carolyn   race lacks speed and she owns some.......bad trip in last or would graduated.....Carla Gaines is due to start finding the winners circle at a better rate

2  Arewehavingfunyet   very impressive late run in her MSW debut which was down the SA hill........sat way too far back for the given pace up front.......that race should set her up nicely for today's turf route........good pedigree to appreciate 2 turns on the turf

4  Jaycee's Humor   cut back in distance seems like a plus.....and she has some speed that lacks it........and Bejarano sticks around

5  Scandal   consistent sort would have been rated higher if there was more early speed in the race to help out her late running style.....but still very dangerous

Long-shot consideration:   3  Autumn Flower    working well enough to be ready "fresh" off of the bench........best career race and a fit here was the only time she went a turf route and the effort is somewhat disguised by a wide trip and sitting too far back

race 6    average clarity

4  When We Met   consistent sort......last two races are solid for today's level.....recent decent 4F drills hint he has held form

7  Bluegrass Reward   another consistent sort whose morning work suggests he has held his form.....major player here if my evaluation is correct

3  Fit To Rule   just snatched at the claiming box by Stute.....sharp bullet work put in by his new conditioer.....and a rider enhancement.......not out of this by any means

6  My Jealous   very dangerous back where he belongs following two spots versus tougher.....and he doesn't like grass or care much for sprinting

race 7    average clarity

3  Sweet   bad starts in both lifetime starts but she did show some ability in both races.....blinkers on today - a no brainer move......and the a.m. work hints it has really helped this filly focus....3rd time might be the charm for R Mandella and friends

6  Artisticdifference   good grass pedigree for this Robert Hess 1ster and the drills sure scream "ready"

4  Foolish Ways   best ever and a fit here is the only time this Harty runner ran at one mile with the blinkers on.......that is the case today

2  Marketplace   so so works prior to MSW turf sprint debut.....stout works since.....says the sprint was the gimme and a full throttle go can occur today

race 8    average clarity

2  Miss Gridley   powerful forward move in 2nd lifetime race....two maintenance works since...same or better seems likely today....and that would make her stout here

4  Faith Pacer   won like a good thing in MSW debut and had to overcome an off track.......very impressive morning prowess since.....jock upgrade.....should be a major player

7  Sambamzajammin   nice forward move in 2nd lifetime start to break her maiden........drills since hint at another move in the right direction.......sharp new trainer (so far)

6  Right There   showed ability in debut....likely needs to show more today but Keith Desormeaux is quite dangerous when he places a youngster seemingly over their head

race 9    average clarity

7   Rosicky   last with 1st time blinkers sure improved this colt significantly.....135:1 for a MSW runner (even on a fast day) is stellar and the gap of 7L to 3rd supports the effort/fig.......2 reassuring works since.........retains the meets top gun.......very tough unless he goes bad in the race

5  Nob Hill   crushed by top choice in last....but....his effort was off of a layoff.....Baffert likely gave him a tune-up.......if so........he might be up for his best and he better be if he wants to challenge our top pick-a-rooo

8  Volume    last was OK.....but what he needs is his effort 2 back if he wants a shot at upsetting the favorite

3   Feynman   set nasty fractions in last in a race down the hill..........might get away early in today's route dirt race and be dangerous

4   Bellamy Concerto    back to Hall of Fame jock Stevens.....a wake-up call?

6  Poythress   best of the rest
