Del Mar for Saturday 28 November 2015

High quality race card today. A pleasure to handicap. I find it kind of reassuring that O'Neill and D'Amato runners are in our selections 11 times (6 and 5 respectably). The two hot trainers are in a battle for the racing title at Del Mar. Let's call today an 8 on the 1 to 10 scale.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

7  Roper   very big race two back likely knocked out this three-year old as he fell way off in next start and since has been away for almost 8 months........returns in the D'Amato barn and drops.......trains like he is ready to roll.......very tough if he is anywhere close to being up to his effort two back

3  Spirit World   solid move in the desired direction in his 2nd lifetime start.....solid 4F work since....believe the "progression" continues today

8  Adair    D'Amato 1ster is working up to snuff to possibly be ready for his debut into the wonderful world of thoroughbred racing.........mom has tossed 4 winners from 5 starters.......went for chump change at sale so starting for MC 20K makes sense

6  Starship Ekati

race 2    above average clarity

1  Alex Rossi    somewhat suspicious drop.......but..........draws Bejarano........and.........O'Neill is battling for the training title at Del Mar......and......just popped a bullet 4F drill

4  Tulira Castle   has turned into a "rent-a-horse" (and a good one) as he has been claimed in 4 of his last 5 yet continues to run for 20 to 25K.......just snatched up by Spawr who is a stellar 27% 1st out with his last 90 claims........likely to get a nice stalk position......shot to make it 4 straight wins

7  I'll Wrap It Up   drop of one notch off of the claim doesn't bother me especially with a nice 6F drill work 6 days ago put in.........dangerous sort 1st time for Ted West

3  Volkonski

race 3    average clarity

6  Unapologetic   last is better than appears in print......wide up on a decent pace......rightfully tired late........major league rider upgrade for a turf race.........trainer/rider have been one hot combo over the last 2 months or so......seems likely to be a major player

8  Path of David   1st time in the Mulhall barn invading two-year old from Ky exits a race where he ran a nice 3rd........which is supported by the fact that 1st and 2nd came back to win..........4 works since arriving in S Cal.....seems meant and ready

12 Archaeo   just keeps getting better........and better.........and better........and now gets 1st time Bejarano and that should help once again enhance his chances of getting.......

4  Undeniable

race 4    above average clarity

2  Lymebyrd   very strong work regiment at LA in preparation for today's MSW debut.......and when Dean Pederson 1sters show good drills they usually fire a strong maiden debut

8  Etailer   4 straight gate works for this O'Neill 1st timer to finish his work regiment strongly suggests he is meant and ready to roll......nice new sire in Square Eddie

5  Eddie Haskel    another dangerous looking O'Neill 1st timer with a great name to boot......for those of you under 40 (maybe even 50) he was a funny dubious character on the 50's and 60's TV show Leave It To Beaver

7  Demonslayer

race 5    average clarity

6  Jeremy's Legacy   very impressive effort 1st in the U S of A for this Ire invader in last.......crushing 10 foes by 5 1/2 lengths or more.......does lose Bejarano but gets the more than capable Gutierrez in the saddle .......last number fits and gets in with 4lbs less today

3  Riri   promising D'Amato filly won for fun in both lifetime races both on the grass and with her latest being at today's distance.......Bejarano lands here......would have been top choice if her winning time in her latest wasn't a little soft

2  Coppa   double barrel action for D'Amato.........two year old filly wired the field in her MSW debut on the dirt at 6F......and she owns good pedigree for the turf and gets Jose Lezcano to rider........should be in the hunt from the get go

13  Mirage

race 6    average clarity

8  Storm Comin Thru   late runner seemingly has a good spot to strut his stuff down the stretch as there is ample speed in this affair.......nice recent near bullet reassuring work.....retains Bejarano.......plenty to like

4  True Ten   blinkers on today - 1st time gelding today........1st time up for a tag today.........dangerous

2  Toledo Eddie   drops one level and that seems rather dangerous for this runner who is 8 for 16 on conventional dirt and only 1 for 20 on other surfaces

6  Roman Tizzy

race 7    average clarity

5  Om   2 for 2 at today's distance on the grass with his latest run in 145:4 .....that's cookin..........loves the front end and I don't see many early challengers in this group......decent shot to make it 3 straight Graded wins

1  Mister Brightside   very consistent (9 3 3 3) Euro invader ran a solid 2nd to Om in his 1st in the good old U S of A......small move forward combined with a jock upgrade and he has a shot

8  Closing Bell   better than appears in print as he has found trip trouble (most of it caused by others) in most of his grass races......seems best at 9 furlongs as he has flattened out some past 9F........not out of this by any means

6  Fundamental

Long-shot consideration:   7  Crittenden   last at one mile was run in decent time.......and I like his 1 1/8th grass race at AP last summer which was run following a 7 1/2F turf race.......so one mile to 1 1/8th seems like a move that sets him up for a top effort today

race 8    above average clarity

3  Dortmund   7 for 8 on dirt rated fast with the only loss to the Triple Crown winner in the Ky Derby (lost to him by only 3L and he dueled most of the way - hardly ever wise in the Ky Derby).......training as if he has remained something special for Baffert and company.......1st on the Del Mar surface is a ? mark

4  Iron Fist   improving sort and he might be up for his lifetime best as Hollendorfer sees fit to take the blinkers off despite an impressive win in his latest.......and the drills since are stellar......not impossible to pull the upset

7  Imperative   improved since Baltas took over two races back........time off and a prolonged good-looking work regiment......hints .........Baltas can get even more out of this better than appears on paper five-year old

6  Yahilwa

race 9    average clarity

4  Mischief Clem  a very nice series of sharp turf works for this Hess runner who is coming off of two turf sprints that are much better than they appear........showed he handles turf well in those efforts and now gets to run a turf route........and he has shown that he appreciates two turn racing on main track surfaces......would love to get 12 to 1 ML

10  Roy H   decent speed in turf sprints finally tries a route which he owns a decent pedigree for.........gets in very light with the 5 lbs bug  boy up (Miller/Lopez teamed up for an easy 6L win yesterday) .........gate to wire attempt here

11  Second Summer   wide trip in a Grade 2 works out to be about 2L better than par for today's level despite being beat by 6 3/4L.........hot rider/trainer team (35% win - 65% in the money) over the last two months

6  Hunt

2  Daddy D T
