Santa Anita for Thursday 14 January 2016

Decent card to start the new week of racing which goes from today through Martin Luther King day on Monday.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

3  Saint Adalbet   SCRATCHED OUT   shipped in and won last summer at the tough Del Mar meet and did so with a significantly weaker rider (at the time) than who is aboard today.........ships in once again for Jauregui with 2 consecutive sharp drills put in at GG.......route is a ? mark......fitness is not

6  Cant Do the Dance   seems like speed of the speed......but at what cost seems like the ? mark.........track played outside last weekend and that would enhance his chances if the surface remains the same for today

2  Valentine Boy    should sit in the driver's seat dead last in this small field loaded with need to lead types........might be in above his head in a 12,500 claimer been sure lucked out race profile wise

race 2    average clarity

5  Carlot Cowboy   seems like a good claim of a six-year-old who is headed in the right direction.......very deserving of a multiple level jump having run a stellar sub 1:15 6 1/2F

1  Out of Patience   dropping a couple of levels below where Powell claimed him for 3 races back.........cut loses.......or......claim me please....obviously my conclusion leans to cutting loses

3  City State   might open up a lead with 7 lbs bug getting in with 114 lbs..........if he does open up a lead and the track plays fair (or speed favoring) he might be awfully tough to catch

race 3   above average clarity

3  La Boheme   solid work regiment for this laid up GB invader who shows up in the R Mandella barn........plenty of endurance put into her in the a.m......and the 1 1/8th is a cut back in distance as she ran 1 1 /4 in all three lifetime starts

1  Margaret Ray   both races since the blinkers were put on are slightly better than par......she likely can stalk the pace sitting pretty in the 2nd of 3rd slot.......such a deal

4  Lookinforadanger   SCRATCHED OUT  new trainer and the 1st thing Poppaprodromou does is make a major rider change for the positive and especially so for a route grass runner......should be able to open up a lead and if Bejarano lulls them to sleep she might...............go...............all.......................the...................way

8  Boat Drinks

race 4    above average clarity

4  Mr. Game Seven   last is much better than appears in print......broke badly and ran wide.........did quite well to finish 5th only beaten by 3L for the win........handled two turns last year albeit on the grass.......major league rider upgrade.......sure seems tough

5  Dinner At Trani's   sure took to his 1st ever going a route of ground on the dirt.........reassuring drill since........repeat of his latest gives him a shot at graduating and if he builds upon his last he might be to one to overcome

7  Little Mustard   drop should help but I'm not so sure a route will.......still it is hard not to consider any Eurton horse that he puts on the track these days especially when Gutierrez rides

1  Motoring Around

race 5    average clarity

NOTE:     AE  11  Guns Loaded seems like a major player if he manages to draw into the field

9  Stormy Liberal    2 for 4 running down the SA hill and the other 2 efforts are close 4th place finishs......better since the blinkers were removed 3 races back.....just ran his lifetime best turf route race...... and.......he seems best sprinting down the hill......so he has the potential for one big grass sprint today

5  Baccelo   faced a very tough group in latest running a close 3rd.......both 1st and 2nd came back to win a couple strong races......much stronger than this affair....sharp recent drills suggests he is ready to roll.......cut back in distance and his ability to handle it is a ? mark

2  Fueled by Bourbon   hard to argue with 3 for 3 down the SA hill grass course.....but.......none of the wins were impressive especially her 2nd win where he was placed 1st by disqualification.........still he is a solid 3rd selection and hard not to consider for the top prize

3  Chips All In

race 6    average clarity

1  Midnight Ming   off pace runner invades off of two good-looking races at GG.......blinkers on and he just popped a strong bullet best of 45 4F work just 5 days ago.......feeling good.......good dirt pedigree.......trainer is stout in all the most relevant categories that fit here

5  Shred the Rules   solid MSW debut 4 weeks ago at Tup winning by 3L with a gap of 9L to 3rd......and 2nd came back to win.......colt winds up in the Mullins barn and the trainer has done well with Az invaders in the past

4  Eddie Haskell   final time for this rascal wasn't much but he did set one very fast quarter and still managed to hold off the field by 3 1/4 lengths.........might be speed of the speed once again this afternoon.......for those of you under 45 Eddie Haskell was a funny dubious rascal of a character on the 50's and 60's TV show Leave It To Beaver

race 7    average clarity

3  Soi Phet   not much speed in this affair and this fellow has some......believe he will be loose on the lead setting slow fractions but he can perform well without it.....only 1 for 9 on the sod but 1 for 3 at today's distance and the effort was at SA

2  Spring Up   away since mid-summer (1st extended layoff of his career) but he sure has run well vs. better.......works seem good enough to compete fresh off of the bench.....and if he is he might be able to get a nice ground saving stalk position enhances his chances of winning

4  Forever Juanito   decent turf one mile efforts in 2 of his last 3 grass races at the distance and one of them is disguised (17 July 14) by a horrendous trip........good trip in last led to a win.......solid drills since ........should be a player

7  Hay Dude

race 8    above average clarity

5  Edzactly   Baffert went from cold to hot "just like that" and has this first time starter working as if the lowly mdn20K level will be a piece of cake.......likely has a "hole" that will show up in the near future by not necessarily now

6  Profound Visionary   laid up 3rd time starter sure ran some decent route turf races a year ago at Tup.......OK dirt dirt pedigree and this should be a "go" or he would have been placed at a higher protected level.......and he is now a five-year old so why wait

7  Upbeat Tempo   last was OK.....likely needs a forward move......and might provide one 2nd out following the layoff

1  Runnamuck Chuck

4  Italian Jumper

3  Ranger School
