Santa Anita for Friday 22 January 2016

Wasn't an easy card to decipher as you can tell by the clarity ratings. The most positive thing I can tell you is when a given card is difficult to handicap I spend more time on it. Hopefully in the long run that is an advantage.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

1  Zorro's Storm   broke well in his maiden debut and then in his next 4 starts he left the metal monster anywhere from 1 to 3 lengths slow.......very solid effort/fig wise here since the fronts were put on in his last two races.......needs to break better today......believe he will win this race gate to wire if he does.......top gate jock up helps

7  Swiss Monster    Harrington has dismal stats route to sprint but this colt has been facing significant better and finally takes a logical drop......and.......not much in this affair if our top choice breaks poorly again

5  Ready Cat   best ever route race two back and best ever sprint race in his last which was a going away at the wire win......steps up one notch and put in for the $22.5K to get 2 lbs off.........so he races with only 113 lbs on his back with the hot 5 lbs bug boy aboard...should be motoring late

4  Cherokee Dynasty

race 2    above average clarity

3  Wise Tale   race 2 back is very strong and hidden by a poor trip.......should have plenty of endurance when push comes to shove in late stretch coming off of two route races and cutting back in distance to 6 1/2 furlongs

8  Slobberknocker   rather sure this 1st timer for Kitchingman and company is meant and ready to roll off of a very strong work regiment with both speed and endurance put in

1  Crushin Candy   bet hard in his lone start especially considering the connections (including the rider) in a MSW race off of a solid work tab in June at SA.....off since and working impressively once again......and entered in a low-level maiden claimer.......jock has won 3 of his last 5 mounts for the trainer

4  Fireball

race 3    average clarity

2  Anxious Times   Gary Stevens has gotten this route horse to run off of the pace which has worked out well.......so he seems highly likely to let the speedy Got Even get loose a couple of lengths and pounce on him very late when he is often vulnerable........five year old has a good history at the distance (3 2 1 0)

4  Perfect Set   seems best on conventional dirt and has never missed the board at the distance on main track surfaces......love the move back to Gonzo who owns a record of 3 wins and 2 2nd's in his last 5 mounts on this fellow

6  Got Even   should be loose on the lead and might hang in there tougher than he usually does cutting back in distance......and he is at his best on the SA dirt surface

race 4   below average clarity

5  No Tricks for Jack   claim back by Diodoro........and why not as this gal is 2 for 2 at a mile for the trainer with a zillion claiming horses.......and the mare on conventional dirt is 10 for 25 and 3 for 8 at SA

6  Abets Abet   keeps dropping and not winning.....can't drop any lower at SA......last fits but is there anything left physically speaking.......hard to know.....toss a coin

2  I'm No Patsy   at her best sitting on or very close to the lead and she should be able to accomplish that here

1  Warrensdollarsigns

race 5   below average clarity

5  Candy Genovesa   Drysdale is at his best 1st time on the grass with a given horse and he sure has this filly training as if she is vastly improved and with plenty of endurance put in.......8 six furlong works since her last race on Nov 1......and the filly has a solid pedigree to run a grass route

4  Tinderella   2nd time Lasix........1st time blinkers.........Mullins has awoken from a prolonged slump in a big way.......solid grass pedigree.......and most importantly vastly improved works.......lifetime best is likely to occur this afternoon.......to what degree is the ? mark

3  Whispering Softly   both lifetime grass races are decent but still below par some for the three-year old filly MSW level at Santa Anita.....but.........if I am incorrect about the potential of the top two choices.........either of those grass efforts could do the trick

2  Majestic Fantasy

Long-shot consideration:   6  Queen Scheherazade   showed some life after a tardy start in lone lifetime race back in Oct.......and it is never easy to get a two-year old filly to compete at a high level on the grass at 1 1/16th in their debut.......and most everything Gallagher puts on the track these days is firing

race 6   below average clarity

2  Take It Easyplease   last fits a ton and then some.......3 wins and 3 2nds since she was a voided claim on Aug 8th.....I am somewhat concerned that her last.........which was a freaky move forward fig wise..........might take its toll

9  She Hums   2 for 2 sprinting on the SA dirt.......and both races turned out to be key races........seems like a good claim by Peter Miller

7  Lets Get Frisky   stout rider/trainer combo of late (3 for last 7) and this six-year-old mare appreciates the SA surface......seems like an overdue drop.....hopefully it is not too late

1  Tatum's Gold

race 7    below average clarity

2  Sugar Buzz   race two back might do the trick but what we want is his effort two back which is quite strong vs. today's foes......hard to tell if we will get it off of 8 weeks rest

9  Frac Candy   lone route race on the dirt fits here and this Peter Miller three-year old colt has a win and a second in two races on the SA dirt........albeit sprint affairs.......tough post but the meets leading rider up in Santiago Gonzalez

5  On Fire   new trainer for today in Sean McCarthy.......needed time off........and placed where he belongs........one lifetime race fits and it fits awfully well with a better trip......race 3 back at Dmr was a MSW breaking win despite a wide trip and doing so up on the pace

8  Bully Pulpit

race 8    average clarity

7  Cimpl Man   solid works prior to his layoff run at GG on December 12th which wasn't bad.......works since are even better.........1st on the grass but owns a pedigree that should handle it......and draws Mike Smith

3  Caldera   lifetime best on the grass was in his only one turn grass race.............albeit on the massive Belmont grass course at 1 1/16th.....that race was run off of a long layoff.....today's is being run off of 7 days rest.....very dangerous

2  Elegant Street   lifetime best was the only time he has run on the SA hill grass course........and it was his MSW debut with an inferior grass rider and without Lasix........that gives him the potential for more today......should be on or near the lead from the opening bell

10  Tuscan Dreamer

8  True Image

5  Film Freak
