Santa Anita for Friday 29 January 2016

Decent card this afternoon. Let's call it a 6.5 on the 1 to 10 scale of things. Saturday also appears to be a good card.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

4  Carlsbad Mountain   on the improve and just snatched up by way of the claiming box by Hollendorfer.....and the drills since strongly suggest Jerry H has improved this fellow some more and smartly steps him up

5  Noble Kent   another who seems to be improving of late and who was just claimed..........seems likely to get a nice mid pack position and that might be a great spot if the 1 and our top pick bang heads in the early going

2  You Know I Know   very surprised how poorly newcomer David Jacobson is doing so far in S Cal........claimed for 50K exactly one week ago......in for 20K today........yikes

race 2    above average clarity

3  Dirt in Your Face   ran awfully well all three times when routing in MC 20K races......dealt with nasty pace in two of those races.......and then in his last on 21 Nov he ran somewhat wide on a strong rail bias......away over two months but working as if he's ready......and he looks loose in this spot.......but he is capable of stalking if need be

2  Spirit World   so so in last but was claimed and today we get a trainer upgrade.......Mullins needs to get the effort he displayed 2 back out of him and do it at a route.......Mullins is heating things for the 1st time in a while so it seems likely this one will rebound.......and get the distance

6  Upbeat Tempo   best I can for say for this colt is that over used phrase (not by me) best of the rest

race 3    average clarity

3  Edzacity   won MC debut by 9 1/4 lengths and was claimed by O'Neill........best win now because usually these kind from Baffert only have a race or two left in them until it is time to hit the farm for awhile......little doubt repeating his last would take this higher level....does he have it in him.....we shall see......here's our top choice comment for him in his debut - "Baffert has this first time starter working as if the lowly mdn20K level will be a piece of cake.......likely has a "hole" that will show up in the near future by not necessarily now"

4  Poythress   stalked a solid set of fractions and went on by and won going away.......not out of this if he can fire the same off of 3 1/2 month layoff......a.m.prowess hints he might

1  Hill Four Eleven   solid MC 40K debut win........that effort fits here.......does have to cope with the tough 1 post at 7F and loses the meets leading rider.....still.....not out of this

race 4    average clarity

4  Exfanofsixties   woke up some in latest and has put in copious furlongs of work since......how about finishing up his a.m. work with 21 furlongs of drills in a span of 2 weeks.....that folks .......says he is feeling good

7  Altaira   last 4 endeavors fit fine considering today's lower level.......drop seems logical......1st time Bejarano........Hess and company could use a win

8  Unusual Storm   seems best at SA and it showed in her last.......claimed by Dean Greenman in the race and he is willing to put her up for the same tag............and why not as the trainer is only 1 for his last 15 1st out following a claim

5  Kelbaker

race 5    average clarity

5  So Golden   won MSW debut and it was at the difficult debut distance of seven panels.........only grass race run was his last which was on April 10th.........that  effort fits vs this lackluster bunch and it was run a furlong further than today.......lookout if he is once again ready "fresh"

7  Miz Graycee    very big drill prior to firing lifetime best (run on the dirt) in last......has put in two impressive drills since.......same or better seems likely today if she can handle the grass as well......only two races on it and they were so so efforts but they were during her developmental stage as a youngster

3  Nazareth   seems to be on the improve and her latest effort is disguised by a rough trip........and her lifetime best was run at one mile on the grass and that also is somewhat hidden.........back in short rest and with a strong 5F work......feeling good

1  Jennyway U Want It    dipped into a 32K claimer to get eligible (and tune-up in a turf sprint) for this Alw 40,000s non claiming condition......good post to save some ground and get a nice mid pack or stalk positon......one mile seems like it fits her best

race 6    average clarity

5  Dragon Flower   trainer does awfully with limited starters.....filly has 2 wins and 3 2nd's in 5 races 6 1/2F or less......6F today and appears to have the most early gas..... and...... draws one sharp speed rider in Maldonado who has been up on this filly 2X

2  Reckless Charm   seems to respond best to 25 to 35 days between starts.....gets that today......connections placed her over her head in last two.......back to where she fits.......seems best taking back some and that might happen naturally as (mentioned above) our top choice appears to be on the front end

4  Skye Diamonds   two nice dirt sprint races to start career....then gave the green carpet a whirl to no avail.....back to a dirt sprint today and with two solid works to finish off her a.m.preparation.........not out of this by any means

6  Be a Lady

race 7    average clarity

5  Warrens Goldnugget   returns to S Cal seemingly vastly improved up North at GG............and she sure is training as if she is ready for her lifetime best......and with 8 lbs less than she had been carrying in N Cal

2  Silver Mojave   not sure why but just popped lifetime best in last walking out of the gate and still getting up for 2nd in an abbreviated 5F turf sprint......usually breaks cleanly.....and 6 1/2F on the grass seems like a better fit.......Mike Puype shows signs of quickly climbing out of the abyss

3  Warrenscrystalized   OK effort down the Santa Anita hill considering it was run off of a 1 1/3rd year layoff and with little support at the windows.......fits here if he manages a logical move forward

1  Q' Viva

race 8    average clarity

3  Sammy Wonder Stone   race 2 back fits well and the way in which Val Brinkerhoff has him working at Tup it seems that we have a decent shot at seeing that effort 2 back run at Dmr at 6F......and 5 1/2F appears to be a better fit

1  Two Ten   nice forward move in latest and the effort is disguised in that he ran 3 wide up on a strong set of fractions in an affair that yielded a fast final time for the MC level........did well to beat 1/2 the field

6  Awesome Journey   good-looking work regiment for this Periban first time starter and the trainer has won a very respectable three of his last dozen with MC 1sters

8  Mountain Hero

5  Gathering Evidence

2  I'm Not Bullish
