Santa Anita for Thursday 25 February 2016

Not the easiest of cards to decipher as you can see from the "clarity ratings".

Best of luck as always!

race 1   average clarity

3  Sweeter Thancandy   all 3 races since adding blinkers fit awfully well vs. this soft looking group......likely heavy favorite has to slip rather badly not to hit pay dirt and graduate this afternoon

6  Lizzy's Tizzy   only lifetime race way back in August of 2014 fits well but I have my doubts that she is up to similar today.....but......if I am wrong in my assessment she can win this especially with a major league rider upgrade on her back

4  Maid Easy   decent return to the race wars off of the extended hiatus from the game........needs a logical move forward of about 3 or 4 lengths.........but......it is not all that encouraging that the trainer and the rider are cold right now

2  Turf Club Queen

race 2    average clarity

4  Miz Graycee   last two races run are better than par for today's level.......and this filly sure appears muscled up in a big way following a grass race in her latest as her Feb 20th drill is very stout

5  Kalbaker   another filly who is very impressive in the a.m..........appears well prepared for her 1st around 2 turns which she is bred to appreciate......Peter Miller has been a little chilly of late but you know that won't last for long

3  Sister of Mercy    Carla Gaines has awoken from the doldrums........and.......part of the success has been dropping declining horses where they can win.......and that is contrary to what she has done over the last decade

race 3    average clarity

3  Speed Check   exits a very fast heat of MSW runners where getting beat by 15L still fits well at today's mid-priced MC level.......same one mile distance today.......no support at the windows especially for a Baffert runner in all three lifetime starts.......that won't be the case today

2  Two the Punch   Gonzo very likely will be pedal to the metal from the get go for this Kory Owens three-year old who is dropping to the lowest MC level of his career.......definitely a dangerous gate to wire competitor in this spot

4  Fashionly Handsome   Baltas is very good at getting a given horse to get a route of ground........and the up and coming trainer is also better than average with 1st starters......and.........the morning drills hint this colt is ready

5  Wondering Ways

race 4    average clarity

3  Moon Over Paris   significant forward move 1st time on Lasix almost winning despite a wide trip.......and the right trainer and the right pedigree to get the mini-marathon distance of 10 furlongs

5  Hiking   exits the same race as our top selection and this mare also had a wide journey.......in fact a little wider than our top pick.......decent pedigree to get the added furlong......Stevens will be out to make amends with his lone mount of the day

2  Shysheisnot   yet another with a lousy trip in her latest.......1 1/4 distance is a fit as she has been victorious at 1 3/8 on the grass.......like the switch to Maldonado who will likely attempt to get this mare on the lead and try to lull them to sleep and wire

6  Cornish Path

race 5   below average clarity

7  Valdosta LOve   Hofmans is better than average at getting MC 1st time starters to the winners circle and he sure has this gelding working extremely well for the three-year old 30K MC level.....seems like a ton if his a.m. prowess transfers to the p.m.

5  I'm Not Bullish    just claimed by O'Neill and he sees fit to geld his new shooter.......three year old only has average sprint speed but average early speed might be good enough to lead or stalk in this affair and especially with 1st time Maldonado

2  The Silent One   rider upgrade and this three-year old colt was washy at the post in his last on a mid 70's afternoon.......seems like a good spot for 1st time blinkers with the lack of early speed in this affair.......check post parade to see if he is washy again

3  Pedro Cerrano

race 6    below average clarity

(only the 2, 3, 7 & 8 would shock me if they won)

1  Algorhythmic   impressive MSW debut which was down the hill on the grass.......sure like the 5F 59:4 work just 3 days ago.......a good sign of total readiness.......Kasparoff starts very few but he has won 2 of his last 5 with 2nd career race starters

10  California Curl   filly wants a dirt sprint and gets one today following a couple of so so route turf races......blinkers on for this 1st time ever this afternoon......believe will be more forwardly placed especially with Maldonado up.........back to the distance where she produced her best outcome with a fast closing 2nd

5  Spread the Joy   lifetime best by far was run turf to dirt and the effort is a good fit here......turf in last.......dirt today.......and back to the jock who rode the last time this filly went turf to dirt

11  Briartic Gal

race 7    average clarity

1  All Star Bub   seems at her best at Santa Anita........and seems at her best at today's 1 1/16th distance.........and back to Mr. Bejarano who owns the last win for this filly which was produced the last time he was up.......all systems go

3  Divine Comedia   the break from the gate might be everything as this mare sure does well when breaking from the gate decently.......keep your fingers crossed when the doors spring open as she seems to have only about 30 t0 40 percent shot at a good break

4  Backintheacademy   fits fine here if she brings her "A game".......strong recent 5F drill and turf to 1 1/16th miles dirt.....last time that occurred it led to a 4 1/4 length win and with a bug boy up ..........bug up today as well

race 8    below average clarity

7  Insubordination   believe this is a weak group thus a good spot for a 1st timer who is working well........Kenny Black is quietly having a good SA meeting and in general a nice 2015/16 with limited starters.......and then there is this big hint that this three-year old is meant and ready......Desormeaux/Black have won their last 2 of 3 and the other was in the money

2  Reliable Source   beat 2/3rd's the field in debut and then 1/2 the field in 2nd lifetime start both of which were dirt sprints with not the best of trips......like the recent decent 6F work.....bred fine for both the grass and a route

5  Lymebyrd   it has been a slippery slope since impressing in his debut.......maybe the lawn can wake his fanny up.....he owns a pedigree that should handle it

8  Etailer

9  The Golden Kid

4  Dano's Dream
