Santa Anita for Sunday 28 February 2016

Another decent looking card at Santa Anita this afternoon. Let's call it a 7 on the 1 to 10 scale of things.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

3  Ipray   by far at her best at today's one mile distance (5 2 2 0)......don't have any stats to back this up but covering the Midwest (where it actually rains) for many years I observed that horses coming off good efforts on very sloppy tracks like this filly did tend to muscle up similarly to coming off a grass race

2  Warren's Tricia R.   turf layoff gimme with the blinkers off........blinkers back on ........drops..........full throttle go today in her 2nd race off the extended layoff

1  Margie's Minute   hated the goo in latest......drops to her lowest level of her career.......very likely will need to avoid a heated duel with 5 horse one way or another to have a shot

race 2    average clarity

4  Fly Lexis Fly   1 for 35 rider but that win came 2 races back on this seven year old.....tried the grass in last which I firmly believe he dislikes......back on the SA dirt and in for the same 25K where he crushed by 7+ lengths for the jocks lone win of the meet

1  Prime Issue   claimed by Miller in his last race which wasn't bad.....decent 3 drills put in by his new conditioner.........should save ground sitting 1st or 2nd.......stout record at the distance (4 3 1 0)

3  Noble Kent   in and out sort needs a rebound.........back to Gonzo hints he is going to give one.......conections will have their fingers crossed that our top two selections will press the issue with one another

6  No Problem

race 3    above average clarity

1  French Getaway   both lifetime route races fit well.....on the right end of the learning curve........tough brother his drill 17 Feb.......a little more speed put into this fellow......will still come from out of it but maybe not so far back this time

4  Malibu Sunset   powerful MSW debut 10 length win for Catalano at start: today in S Cal with Baffert....... should be a factor from the get surface.......1st long.......or......would have been top choice

5  Mineyerownmalone   only race when he got loose on the lead led to a 12L win and a solid blinkers on......and that means the connections are all out to get their gelding loose on the front end once what cost is the ? mark

race 4    average clarity

6  Guns Loaded   back in 8 days off of a solid dirt win......might have exited the race in excellent condition.......race 3 back (on firm turf) on the SA hill is strong......should get decent close up position behind the 4 horse in a race profile that favors those near the front early

4  Rocket Heat    yet to win on the hill in 3 attempts but sure seems loose here and with Bejarano at the controls.....that is one dangerous proposition

7  Bench Warrant   fierce late kick down the SA hill......rather fun to watch......but the 4 yr old colt will need more pace that anticipated to earn the right to enter the winners circle

2  Hunt

race 5    average clarity

5  Holiday Mousse   off a little slow and ran way too wide in a better than appears on paper 7F 2nd lifetime race.......has more speed than many will evaluate if he gets out of the gate cleanly (right jock up to get that accomplished) for the 1st time in his brief career......bred fine to get the two turns........back in short rest.....believe sitting on a solid move forward

3  And Then Some   disappointing 2nd in a somewhat weak time at 3 to 5 in last.....claimed by Mulhall who got this gelding to work a solid near bullet 4F work.......trainer is firing on all cylinders and likely has improve this youngster some.....we shall see

4  Kiwi Attitude   so so 1st at a route in his latest and he was beaten by our 2nd choice in the race.....but blinkers on for today and an improved drill.........hinting the equipment change has done some good for this Gaines runner.....not out of this if it has

2  Dinner At Trani's

race 6    average clarity

4  Zip the Monkey    1 for 1 on the sod......and just fired a solid 2nd on a sloppy main track despite getting bumped at the start and running too wide......back to the grass and back to Gonzo who rode him for his grass win

7  Los Gatos   handles the grass OK.......solid layoff effort in the goo in latest running wide up on a stout pace.......rightfully tired as most would especially coming off of a 5 1/2 month layoff.....very dangerous.....almost made top pick-a-rooo

5  Royalist   toss last as he disliked the off going which his pedigree hinted he would.......back on the grass where he won his MSW debut and did it with a jock who is nowhere near the rider that Espinoza is......another dangerous contender

6  At Ease

race 7    average clarity

6  Emmzy   brutal trip in MSW debut with about 8L of trip trouble.....only lost be 7 1/ speed work since......switch to Garcia who has mostly been Baffert's 1st call guy for some time now

8  Georgia Blue   decent 2nd in MSW debut which was on the sod.......1st Lasix today......and 1st on the dirt which his pedigree suggests he should handle........and last but not least Drysdale is much better with 2nd time starters

7  Lily   not the best of trips by Smith in MSW debut.......very aggressive work regiment since with tightly spaced drills.......should be well prepared for today......Mike Smith could use a win as he is down to a 10% win % and that is awfully low considering the quality of the horses that he gets on

9  Lady Cloud

race 8    above average clarity

4  Iancol   powerful race in last running wide up near a stout pace.....earned a strong adjusted Santucci fig that is 4 1/2L better than par for today's higher level........Hollendorfer wisely gets his improved colt out of a claiming race

2  All Star Parade   on the right end of the learning curve.......needs ample time between starts and Mac shows patience and gives it to his colt........should be in the hunt from the get go likely sitting 2nd, 3rd or 4th

6  Ultra Sharp   just popped lifetime best (albeit on a sloppy track) and graduated since are vastly improved......don't have any stats to back this up but covering the Midwest (where it actually rains) for many years I observed that horses coming off good efforts on very sloppy tracks tend to muscle up similarly to coming off a grass race

7  Dynamite Ride

race 9    above average clarity

2  West Coast Storm   fell off form but he woke up some in his last and shows vastly better a.m. work since......and Baltas gets Bejarano to ride making for a major rider upgrade.....all points to this mare feeling good once again........last grass race run was four races back and would crush these with a better trip (broke about 6 or 7 slow leaving the metal monster)

8  True History   seems like a good claim by Wright who is awfully good with his grass stock.....last win and a fit here was run 3 back was the last time this filly saw firm turf.......same rider that rode that day is up today in Santiago (Gonzo) Gonzales

1  Odisseia   not much endurance in this grass route runner but he sure should get what he needs as in a loose lead......and I like that Peter Miller puts in an endurance building 6F work into this guy 1st the 1st time since 2 Oct 15

6  Stole a Kiss

5  Belle Et Bete

10  Housemaker
