Santa Anita for Thursday 7 April 2016

Good card this afternoon as I was never anywhere close to rating any of today's races as "below average clarity". Let's call it an 7 on the 1 to 10 scale of things.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

2  Cimpi Man   good trip should be in the cards for this Gary Mandella colt with his good post and tactical speed.....might even grab a loose lead.......retains Mike Smith and Smith is willing to show up for only one mount on the day

3  Atypique   solid sprint MSW debut down the majestic SA hill grass course.........and he owns a pedigree that screams "route"......elder Mandella vs his son......bragging rights to one of them

1  Pappou   4 Feb race wasn't much and was his only race run since 26 Oct 14......the drills prior to his Feb race were so so.....they are just the opposite now......1st on the grass but bred fine for it..........wake up city

5  Heat

race 2    average clarity

6  Diamonds Dena   dirt races run outside of California for this five yr old mare sure look rather stout vs. this group.......15% trainer is 24% turf to dirt........turf in last

2  Moscato Girl   Miller speed type will attempt to grab the lead from the 5 horse as she did in her last (and maybe a few others) and go gate to wire

1  Fiesta Express   race has enough speed in it that it might set things up for this late runner especially if our top choice doesn't run the race that I obviously expect him to

race 3    average clarity

1  Sensitively   ran her eyeballs out in her last breaking the 109 flat barrier and did it on a day the track was a bit on the slow side.....tough to repeat such a grueling race but she has worked 7 times since her 13 Feb race.......and she is trained by D'Amato who can do no wrong lately

3  Alwazabridesmaid   good sprint history at SA ( 4 3 0 1).........Hollendorfer filly should get a nice outside stalking or pressing position......2 for 2 since blinkers were put on with both of the races being at SA

4  Blushing Angel   nice win in last 1st time with blinkers.........connections will have their fingers crossed that our top two selections bangs heads in the kind of pace that is unsustainable

race 4    average clarity

8  Clever Royal   just missed for the last time he competed for 50K claiming level in a race done the hill......50K claiming today and he just worked two much improved works......seems all set for best

3  County Lineman   not much in two starts in 2016 but he drops and has enough time off to possible turns things around.....and if he rebounds he owns multiple efforts down the SA hill that would make him very tough here

5  City of Vengeance   0 for 3 with the blinkers on the grass.......2 for 3 on the grass without them.....blinkers off today seems like a wise move 1st out following the Ellis claim

6  Heir of Storm

race 5    average clarity

5  Fiftypercentcotton   Dan Blacker has been dismal with maiden claiming 1st time starters but I believe that is about to change today as this three-year old filly is training too well to ignore especially in this soft looking field

1  Stir Fry   par like efforts in both lifetime starts....might fall off some as this is her 3rd start in 4 weeks....but then again if the 1st timer doesn't fire she might still take this with a small regression

6 One Smart Cat   bet hard in MC debut and ran rather disappointingly for her backers........claimed by O'Neill in the race and he gave her some time off........deserves another chance?

9  Adrian's Girl

Long-shot consideration:   2  Reno Rendezvous    broke slow and ran a bit wide in her MC debut in an effort that is not as bad as appears in print......likely needed the race badly as her works were quite it seems logical that the race might have muscled her up some......some shot if it did

race 6    above average clarity

4  Surfing the Menu   powerful effort/fig for the MC20K level in latest.......that effort is quite a bit better than par for today's 12.5Knw2 level......I am a touch leery that Karen Headley didn't place her mare in a starter alw 40K nw2 race where she couldn't be claimed

8  Audra   time to cut into the red ink and drop this filly in her 4th start following the 30K claim.......O'Neill is battling it out for the trainers title and might drop more than this filly this week to get it

6  Zanab   another taking a drop to stop the red ink.......last for this deep closer fits at today's level.....rather impressive stretch run into one soft set of fractions

7  Stole My 'Art

race 7    average clarity

3  Havanna Belle   2 for 5 at one mile on the grass.........1 for 9 at other turf distances........rider hot trainer.....hard not to like in this soft looking field

1  Hijra   26 to 1 in her layoff last for a Hollendorfer runner suggests the race was needed and that much more is likely this afternoon.....and the layoff effort wasn't that bad

7  Fasnacioich    seems like a good spot for a new shooter as this is a weak group.......away since September but this east coast invader is working quite well for her new trainer David Hofmans

5  All Star Bub

race 8    average clarity

5  Song for Jade   returns for her 2nd lifetime start following a 8 month layoff with a set of drills that suggest she has returned a vastly improved filly with 1st time blinkers.......and......Janet Armstrong does well with limited starters and is very relieable when she shows good works with a given horse

1  Spark Plug Katie   not much showing in her MSW debut way back in May of 2015......but...... drops into a low levl MC for her 2nd lifetime start and like our top selection she is training for Mullins and company as if she is improved and ready.....and Jeff Mullins was hot last week

2  Goldrushcat   3 of her 4 lifetime endeavors are par like efforts for the MC level.........and the cut back in distance seems like a plus........not out of the picture at all

3  Lady's Discretion

7  Manhattan Fashion

6  Yes Virginia
