Santa Anita for Saturday 9 April 2016

Kind of a bummer for such a great day of racing to be run on a day that has such a dismal forecast.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity  (if stays on the turf)

5  Liam the Charmer   very strong 9 furlong grass race in latest.......ran a close 2nd despite breaking slightly tardy and running very wide and did it on a grass course with some give to it which today's turf likely will have as well.....a ton here with a better trip if this colt repeats the effort or even gives 90 % of his last

6  Wild About Deb

7  Mr. Roary

8  Clear the Way

race 1    below average clarity   (if taken off the turf)

5   Liam the Charmer   probably bred as well as anyone in the field to handle a main track surface including one that has moisture in it.........very strong 9 furlong grass race in latest.......ran a close 2nd despite breaking slightly tardy and running very wide.....a ton here with a better trip if this colt repeats the effort on the main track

6  Wild About Deb

2  My Golden One

10   Curlin Road

race 2    above average clarity

4  Passau   drop 20K to 16K  following a win in this case doesn't bother me much as they are not many spots for 3 yr old runners in claiming races......and his latest stands out in this field

1  Navy Hymn   has a shot to get a jump on the field and that is often more dangerous on a surface with some moisture if that is the case......retains the meets top gun

8  Gathering Evidence   also owns the kind of speed to possibly find  himself on the lead......O'Neill trains this youngster and also the 2nd choice so I doubt they will get involved in a duel.....like the switch in riders back to Prat who won on this colt in his debut 2 back

7  Cherokee Dynasty

race 3    average clarity

3  Spanish Hombre   smartly steps up following a strong run that was totally compromised by a bad trip.....broke 4 slow and ran wide........same effort/energy and a decent trip and he should be the one to overcome despite stepping up 2 MC levels

7  Pete's Play Call   needs his effort two races back which was quite strong running a touch wide up on a solid set of fractions........he does have something to prove sprinting......but he gets a major rider upgrade for the route to sprint transition to get done successfully accomplished

8  Jimmy the Juice   away since August but he is training great and appears to have the most early gas in the field......needs to put away the 9 horse who likely will fold early if he loses contact to front end

5  Eric the Trojan

race 4    average clarity

4  Glacken Too   held onto an impressive 3rd dueling in a nasty set of fractions for a 7F race in his latest........same pace today and he is likely to get as free s a bird...... as in loose on the lead ......and might never look back especially with the cut back of one full furlong

1  Stormy Liberal   strong race turf to dirt two back.....turf in last and dirt today.......should sit in a nice stalk position behind our top selection.....seems like a major player

7  Texas Two Step   2 for 4 at today's 6 furlong distance.....0 for 8 elsewhere......seems a factor in his 1st start at the 6 panels in 8 races

6  Chief Lion

race 5    average clarity  (if stays on the turf)

5  Nodiac   solid consistency in 4 lifetime starts since arriving in the USA for Phil D'Amato......more than deserving of her 1st attempt in a Graded race......back to Bejarano who owns a win and a 2nd in two mounts on her......bred for and has shown that she can handle  a softer course

9  Lady Valeur

1  Decked Out

2  Mirage

race 5    below average clarity  (if taken off the turf)

1  Decked Out   few in here have shown they can handle the dirt but she has.......although she has yet to run on a dirt surface that has moisture in it.......tepid top pick

3  Kiss N Scat

6  Do the Dance

8   Sheza Milky Way

4   How Unusual

race 6    average clarity

7  Crimson and Gold   so so effort in her 2nd lifetime start.....but.......her MSW debut was solid.....and her recent a.m. work hints she will rebound to it

1  Ready to Hula Lula   both this filly and our 3rd choice can really fly early and best not duel if they want to graduate......Bejarano stays up for a 3rd straight time.....a decent sign this younster has held form

3 Emmzy   lifetime best run off of 15 days rest and the effort is better than appears in prints......13 days rest today......as mentioned above the jock needs to avoid a suicidle speed duel one way or another

8  Street Sweets

race 7    above average clarity

1  Songbird   Zenyatta-Beholder-Songbird.......the West Coast has dominated the with the F & M division for the last 3 decades or so but not quite like these three.....an off surface seems to be the only question mark for this brilliant 3 yr old filly

7  Bellamentary  on the improve with every start and very deserving of this significant step up but unfortunately catches a monster......but.......funnier things have happened on off tracks if that is the case today

6  Mokat   just fired her lifetime best on the dirt........decent pedigree on the gooo.......will need to absolutely love it to challenge for the win today

2  She's a Warrior

race 8    above average clarity

3  Danzing Candy   solid front running type gets what he needs in all likelihood here.....effort/figure earned in winning a Grade 2 in his last is actually better than par for this pretigious race.....extra 1/16th seems very doable but of course an off surface is a ? mark as it is for many in here

2  Exaggerator   consistent sort and one of the few in here that has shown he can cope with the off going.....should be able to get a nice mid pack ground saving position....and one solid brother team at the helm

4  Mor Spirit   three yr old has been in the exatca in all 6 lifetime starts and that includes 4 of which were Graded races.......and he handled the off track rather well at CD.....would have been placed higher if I wasn't a touch leery of his ability to perform his best at 1 1/6th further

5  Smokey Image

race 9    average clarity (if stays on the turf)

12  What a View   normally I am very leery of a Grade 1 or Grade 2 winner making his or her next start in a non Graded race....but this fellow is 4 for 4 on the SA grass course and 1 for 5 elsewhere....and more importantly this grass course will be dug up in early summer so you need take advantage of any race that you qualify for on the turf..........should be a ton from start to finish

7  Twentytwentyvision

14 AE Ohio

9  Finnegans Wake

4  Cool Green

race 9    average clarity (if taken off the turf)

8  Texas Red   best dirt credentials in this affair carded for the turf.......barn might be doing a rain dance right now as I type away touting their 4 yr old colt

14 AE  Ohio

6  Decisive Edge

12  What a View

1  Poshsky

race 10    average clarity

6  Tough But Nice   great spot for a speed horse like this three yr old colt......a very unusual lack of early gas for a 200K State-bred race....should have good endurance for this race coming off of a route race

7  Gold Rush Dancer   another one of the few who owns some early speed......Gary Stevens will likely be full throttle from the opening bell

2  Tough It Out   might be the best animal in the race but the race shape doesn't favor his late running style.....but the again Phil D'Amato is on quite a roll

9  Xingtothebone

race 11    average clarity

4  Pacific Heat   done little wrong in 5 lifetime races.....and won both his lifetime sprint endeavors very easily......easy to make as the top pick

5  Be s Lady   on the improve with each and every race both final time wise and pace wise......Bejarano had his choice of quite a few in here and took this filly who started her career in a low level claimer.....should be in the hunt from the get go

10  Run for Retts   trip from you know where in latest.....broke 4 slow and ran wide on a good rail day.......big effort to run 2nd.......new jock today

3  Shy Carmelita

race 12   average clarity

4  Giant Expectations   real fig earned is quite a bit better than par and the adjusted number for trouble and pace is off the charts......a ton and then some unless falls off of form a lot

10  American Freedom   expensive Baffert 1st time starter is training as if he has plenty of ability and he will need it if our top choice gives the same effort with a better journey

9  The Lieutenant   75 to 1 in his MSW debut has gimme written all over it and not a bad "gimme" at that......trainer likes to fire  2nd time around with a youngster.......we should see what this colt has today

6  Boy Howdy

8  Brown's Baby Boy

7  Street to Indy
