Los Alamitos for Thursday 14 April 2016

Remember no publication is available on Friday 15 April for Los Alamitos!

Good weather forecast for both Keeneland and Oaklawn and I sure like what I see for the 8 stakes races (4 at each track) that we are covering. Click on OP/Kee banner for details.

A bit chalky but the opening card at Lrc seems decent. Hope the track plays fair.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

5  Ultimate luck   nicely improved since switching to route racing and/or taking the blinkers off......four year old gelding has run well at Lrc in the past.......jock is looking for his 1st win of 2016 and has a shot at getting it here

1  City State   sprint- sprint - route scenario here for this six-year-old in good form.......not too crazy about this being his 3rd race in 14 days or would have been top choice

4  Hadfunlastnight    sprint races fit decently but I doubt this seven-year old is capable of similar running a route of ground....but......getting the lead might make him brave and he sure appears to have it here

race 2    average clarity

7  Daphne's Day   one of Tim Yakteen's more dangerous stats is MSW to maiden claiming.....that is the case here and the incentive to drop now might be that this fillies lifetime best was her lone race at Lrc.....and it was also at 5 1/2F

6  Gymnast   on the improve with each and every start and her 4th endeavor might be the charm as she is sharp in the a.m. and seems likely to be in the mix from the get go

2  Candy Tale   a.m. prowess seems good enough to possibly be ready to roll in her MC debut for Kathy Walsh.......and Walsh is more than capable at getting a maiden claimer ready at 1st asking

10  Express Checkout

race 3    average clarity

1  Alexita   Peter Miller really started to heat things of at the end of the SA meeting.......very good drills at Slr for this laid up filly......Miller/Pena are 3 for their last 8 teaming up......and this filly seems best at today's 6F distance

6  Tiz Sweet Bliss   (3 1 1 1) sprinting with the blinkers off which they are today......and.......her best effort was at Los Alamitos in her lone effort on the relatively new thoroughbred surface

4  Wish Understood   was on the improve winning her 3rd lifetime start by 12L but she soon after had to be put farm following the strong effort.......works suggest Baffert has her ready to roll off of the long layoff......might have placed higher if her maiden debut was better.......might......I say might.....need the race

race 4    average clarity

7  Sorullo   don't see too many in this field capable of running 109 flat at Tup like this fellow just did......seems like a solid "pick-up" by Periban.......lead type only gets the right jock for the job in Pedroza

5  Oil   claimed for $40K in late November and winds up here for $10K in his 3rd start for Art Sherman and company......last sure fits but can he get close to producing it with whatever ails him......flip a coin

3  Sir Barclay   the abbreviated sprint distance should be to his liking.....and.....he handles the Lrc surface rather well (3 1 2 0)......should sit in a nice stalk position

2  Close to the Edge

race 5    below average clarity

5  Lord of Choas   tepid top choice is improving.......might be sitting on his lifetime best if of course he can handle the dirt in his 1st race on it.......should have plenty of "staying power" coming off of a grass route if he does take to the main track

7  Dr. Go   very solid race in 2nd lifetime start (and only start at Lrc) and the effort is disguised by dueling on a dull inside in decent pace.......so lookout today if his layoff last isn't anything more than a gimme

2  Anatolian Heat   so so works but I've seen a few strong maiden debuts for Miller without telltale works.......and mom has tossed 4 winners from 4 starters

4  Lymebird

race 6    average clarity

4  Clem Juice   2 for 3 at Lrc.......0 for 9 elsewhere.......last sure appears to be a turf tightener to be muscled up and ready for the track that she greatly prefers......we shall see

10  One Bye Two   another who appears to appreciate the Lrc surface........10 post but not that many horses inside of him so his high level of speed should keep her from being caught too wide

3  Secret Chords   voided claim in late November so she likely has some physical problems still........but she sure fits if she holds together for 5 1/2F......especially with a nice rider upgrade to Desormeaux

2  Ebony Cat

Long-shot consideration:  9 Royals Roycing    solid wake-up in her latest with the blinkers taken off.....significant step up but the trainer has hit the board with 4 of his last 6 (with one win) stepping up multiple levels.....and the 7 lbs apprentice knows this mare well

race 7    above average clarity

4  Fusaichi Samurai   on the improve with every start and with few reasons not to believe that Baffert can't keep the progression rolling along.......and in all likelyhood he only needs is to get the same run out of this gelding as his latest

6  Howdy   Cal-bred has caught some stout and key fields in about 1/2 of his starts including his last couple.....fits fine in this open company nw alw race.....sharp in the morning.....seems highly likely to be a major player

3  Carlsbad Mountain   4 wins and 2 2nd's in his last 6 climbing the class ladder......overcame a wide trip up near the pace and still managed to win in his latest..........Diodoro smartly and deservedly steps him out of the claiming ranks.....not out of the picture at all

2  It Is Living Water

race 8    average clarity

1  Bishops of Compton   her best race by far was her only race without blinkers and it is disguised by a poor trip versus better........ and........I doubt she was all that cranked up as she went off 74 to 1 in what was her maiden debut......blinkers off and sprinting make her dangerous today

2  Short Memories   one of three lifetime races fit here and it was run off of 5 weeks rest..........running off 5 weeks rest today and her recent a.m. work is improved......might be sitting on lifetime best

5  Vida Bonita   works seem good enough for this 1st timer to compete vs a weak looking group of MC 30K runners....and 4 of her last 5 drills are out of the gate hinting she is well prepared and possibly "well-meant" in her debut
