Santa Anita for Friday 6 May 2016

Saturday's card should be available this evening and if not it will be available by 6 a.m. pacific.

Some rain in the forecast so I now need to handicap for the possibility of the (the Graded races should stay on the turf) the races being taken off the grass both today and Saturday. That means quite a bit more work and that I will likely will need to cut back on the comments for Sunday.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

4  Eichel   2nd time starter went off at 9 to 1 in MSW debut in a 4 horse field which hints he wasn't fully cranked up and that he should be a candidate for a forward move today........his final time was about 58:90 which looks decent vs. this soft looking group of all but one 1st timer and he beat that runner by 8L

1  Hot Perfection   John Brocklebank did well with the babies last spring/summer so he might be ready with this youngster despite only 3 so so drills showing

2  Downside Up   Pat Harrington 1st timer definitely shows speed in her works which is an obvious plus in a 4 1/2 furlong race......would have rated higher if he wasn't a vet scratch two weeks ago

race 2    average clarity

4  Daphne's Day   just fired lifetime best to graduate in start number 8 with a switch to the most accomplished jock she has seen to date in T C Baze......and since then she worked a very impressive 4F bullet work.......she has always trained at SA and finally gets to strut her stuff at her home track

2  L. A. Magic   declining sort just fired a rebound effort which was the best run she has had in 10 months.....a major player and then some if she can duplicate the effort

5  Street Goddess   this filly seems to appreciate weight off her back as her two best lifetime efforts are the only two times a bug boy has been up......and both races were at 5 1/2 furlongs

1  Magical Touch

race 3    average clarity

3  Jazzie Cat   solid efforts in all three lifetime races all of which were at SA......and he has been able to put in a nice 3 work series of 5F drills since his 5 1/2L win on April 2nd.....that suggest's he is feeling good for Mullins and company

2  Cass in Stone   impressive improvement 1st out following the O'Neill claim in his latest which was way back in Oct........hard to tell if he is ready off of the bench but he is a top contender if he is

5  Stormin Trick   take a look at this four-year old gelding's races running less than 6 1/2 furlongs (3 1 1 1).....they are all good efforts and fit well enough to be part of the picture here......regular rider Baze did land on our top choice or would high considered higher

race 4    average clarity  (if off the turf  6-5-8-3)

8  Mysterious Miracle   nice forward move in 2nd lifetime endeavor and 1st down the majestic SA hill........been away 2 months but the works suggest stout grass trainer D'Amato has him cranked and ready to roll......and that seems wise as turf racing down the hill will be suspended June 5th to replace the turf on the hill

6  Audacious Angel   has run a par effort for this level on the dirt.......and her only race on the turf which was down the hill is much better than it appears in print.......she sat 9th in one of the slower set of fractions you will ever see down the hill and she still managed to close to be beaten by only 2 1/4L

5  Lori's Attitude   good MSW debut down the hill for this Gaines three-year old filly.......training like she exited her race in good shape and that she should fire another good effort ........not much separating our top 3 selections

3  Always Dangerous

race 5    below average clarity

6  Iancol   1st time gelding today for Hollendorfer and company and the surgery seems to have been successful as his a.m. work is impressive.......tightly spaced (6 day intervals) 5F works all clocked at 1:00 flat or faster .....all wound up and ready to pop

2  Fusaichi Samurai   failed at 3-5 in his last but Pedroza did lose the whip......race two back is strong......switch to 1st time Bejarano.......needs a rebound.....good chance he provides one and with a rider upgrade

3  Big Tire   solid forward move sprinting in last should set him up well for a top effort back at a route.......deep closer seemingly gets ample heat up front.....he definitely qualifies for the "last man standing" entry in this sot

race 6    below average clarity

8  Twentytwentyvision    ultra consistent on the grass to date with 3 wins and 3 2nd's in 6 lifetime turf races........dangerous back in relatively short rest and that is the case today

2  Southern Freedom   woke up in latest and it was at SA in a one mile grass race like today......and he sure has been aggressively trained since his April 3rd race with 4 decent drills.....best series of works in quite some time.....that suggests a necessary forward move is going to occur today

7  Producer   decent grass sprint tune-up in latest off of the 13 month layoff and a good work regiment since......Drysdale finished up the SA winter/spring SA meeting quite well and might keep the ball rolling here with this Euro invader

4  Ohio

Long-shot consideration:   9  Home Run Kitten   blinkers on for this Hofmans runner and the works are vastly improved hinting the equipment change has woken his five-year up.....and if it has lookout as he has some strong one mile grass races in the past

race 7    average clarity

5  Wildfire Kid   2 lifetime races at SA but both were on off tracks.......the race 2 back was run on a very sloppy track and was solid both in pace and final time.....then his next was on a mud floated track and he dueled in an unsustainable pace and rightfully tired......so did he like the SA surface in general or the off going?......might be a moot point if we get moisture in the track with some rain in the forecast

6  When We Met  been off since June when he won and the claim was voided....plenty of time to recover and can't be claimed.......and considering he won twice and the claim was voided he might be up for even better with time healing his lameness

7  My Ole Bud   if the track is dry & fast the 5 might not show his significant early gas.......thus........this fellow might get loose and loose with a dangerous speed jock up

2  Apollo Ten

race 8    average clarity

5  Worldwide   logical drop from the MSW ranks and for a predictably solid rider/trainer combo.......as it wouldn't be wise for either a son-in-law or a father-in-law to do anything differently

9  Justonetimebaby   didn't care for the turf in his MSW debut....drops.....switches to S Cal's top gun....and removes the blinkers.....wake up call here 1st on the dirt

2  Arch Kisser   big surprise to the gamblers and likely his connections as well going off at 48 to 1 in a 7 horse field and closing fast to almost win......stepped up double the claiming price in next and once again ran 2nd.....good sign the barn ships and steps up again....1st on conventional dirt but owns an OK pedigree for it

4  Ajac

race 9    average clarity   (if off the turf  4-8-6-11-1-5)

4  All Star Parade   on the improve since the blinkers were put on 7 races back.......toss out both grass races as they were both without blinkers and his only dirt race without them was bad too.....1st blinkers turf today and never been sharper....last two dirt races are about 5L better than appear in print

6  Aren Vaughn   both lifetime turf races are par like efforts......gets S Cal's top gun in Bejarano who should get a nice stalking or mid pack position.......does well with ample time between starts and gets it........good work tab is reassuring

9  Bronzino   solid layoff run in latest his 1st endeavor in the good old U S of A......gets Lasix for his 2nd lifetime start.......2nd out following a layoff + 1st Lasix = plenty of upside potential = very dangerous 3rd choice

8  Dirt in Your Face

11  Larry Birdstone

1  Black Tie 'n Tails
