Santa Anita for Friday 3 June 2016

What a trip my wife and I had to Merano, Italy which is a two-hour drive south of Innsbruck, Austria and in the heart of the Alps. I have stayed in approximately 150 different European cities (big and small) over the years 1/2 of which were travels in Germany for a high-tech job I had for the U S Army. Merano Italy went to the top of the list. For what it is worth the list now goes like this:

1 Merano Italy (fabulous town 0f only 60K and still with a beautiful racecourse)  2 Ibiza Spain   3 Berchtesgaden Germany   4 Garmisch Germany   5 Edinburgh Scotland   6 Lucerne Switzerland   7 Barcelona Spain 8 Heidelberg Germany   9 York England (great town and racecourse)   10 Amsterdam Netherlands   11 Salzburg Austria  12 Berlin Germany   13 St. Andrews Scotland  14 Marseille France   15 Munich Germany

Very sad to leave one beautiful place but it is great to be back doing what I love and that is handicapping thoroughbreds. With the sizzling hot temperatures today watch for any track bias that might develop. I hope it doesn't as I think this is a good card. I usually mark the temperature every race day and looking back the track has been even or somewhat outside the last 10 times the temps at Santa Anita hit 97 degrees or higher. No rail biases.

Best of luck as always and a special thanks to all of you as nobody complained about missing a week of racing at Santa Anita!

race 1    average clarity

5  Bedeviled   exits a fast heat loaded with talent where getting beat by 6 1/4L works out to be better than par for today's lower level ......and........he had a bit of a wide trip

7  Latest Craze   both lifetime races fit fine here for this Baffert colt......but he was a vet scratch on May 14th in a Mdn40K......decent sign he has rebounded some as he is in for 35K more today

3  Oso   ice cold trainer in Harty at the helm but he usually is dangerous first time he drops out of MSW racing into maiden claiming........lone lifetime route dirt effort fits and it was on the SA surface

1  Beaumarchais

race 2    average clarity

5  Green With Eddie   very impressive works for a 2 yr old state-bred 1ster worked on the LA surface.......and I like that O'Neill put in a soft drill at SA 4 days ago to help "tune" his baby to the SA dirt

3  Yodelers Way   useful MSW debut for this Harrington colt.......blinkers on today to hold his focus longer.....but what really catches my eye is the monumental rider upgrade

7  Carville   race might fall into his favor late as I believe the 3 - 5- 6 will all go hard early.......and a significant trainer upgrade for today's 2nd lifetime start

6  We Go Now

race 3    average clarity

4  Spicy Blonde   vet scratch May 19th but worked 2 days later and then again 7 days later......last win came on a significant drop.......significant drop again today......Miller is much better than average with multi-level drops

1  Dancing Sunset   best ever and a good fit here is his last on the SA dirt in a race run 2 back.....didn't run as "fast" in his last but did win going away at Lrc.........never sharper in the a.m. since......might be up for lifetime best

2  Hail Mary Play   first four lifetime races on the conventional dirt sure fit well here.....but his 5th and last does not.......Machowsky smartly gives his filly a break for her 2nd out following the sure hint at a rebound

5  Princess Kendra

race 4    below average clarity

2  Papaslilprincess   very solid run after a bad start (1st out after the Pender claim) for this six-year-old mare.....back fairly quick and with a reassuring work......appreciates the somewhat specialty 7F distance.......come on Giuseppe

5  Smooth Talker   not the best of claim backs but O'Neill but Doug gives her plenty of time off to right the ship........and she is 2 for 2 at the distance

7  Larocco  slowly diminishing sort who used to be game at the wire but these days she has been flattening out......but a dangerous rider/trainer combo at the helm in Pedroza/Mulhall

6  Chicago Angel

race 5    above average clarity

2  Entrechat  don't write this comment too often:  best down the hill when not on Lasix (4 1 2 1)......that is the case here......and I sure like the recent 5F work on the SA training track.......and.......the switch to the red-hot (especially on the hill) Flavien Prat

6  Big Move   loves the SA hill (4 2 2 0).......didn't fire her best in last and still almost won......strong breezing 4F work since hints she might today.....retains Bejarano

9  Mysterious Miracle   seems likely to lead or stalk in an affair that seemingly sets up for those up close early.......and she is trained by the ever dangerous with a grass horse Phil D'Amato

3  Barbara Beatrice

race 6    above average clarity

2  C. C. Zip   laid up since Oct but......owns the best early speed and the best final time fig.......and the works suggest Hollendorfer is not wasting a race here

1  Sweetwater Gal   very strong work regiment for this Ellis 1st timer.......Ellis is usually in no hurry with his youngster's but I don't believe that is the case here with this three-year old filly

4  Leveler   went off 35 to 1 in her debut which strongly suggests this D'Amato filly wasn't all that cranked up and surprised her connections with her 2nd place finish......she likely is "cranked" now.....very dangerous

7  Like That

race 7    average clarity

5  Glacken Too   never better and seems likely to grab the front end in this spot and with a hot speed rider at the helm......should be tough if he holds form

3  Lord Nelson   Baffert colt has been extremely unlucky in who he has had to face to date.....he is much better than his lifetime record (9 3 1 1) indicates........away since late Dec but training lights out

6  Ocho Ocho Ocho   finally gets back to where I believe he in a dirt sprint.......2 for 2 sprinting on the dirt (and both races were at SA)..........1 for 6 at other distances and/or surfaces

race 8    average clarity

8  Radiant Journey   very consistent sort and she handled the hill in her only race on it.......bit surprised she is up for $20K today but then again she won her state-bred nw and her open company nw ....and the barn likes to win races

10  Summer Wine   nice wake-up in last and Gary Stevens sticks around.....strong late kick and the right jock up to know when to use it

7  Algorhythmic   done little wrong in 2 lifetime races down the majestic SA hill turf course.....four year old filly has been away since mid March but has been training like she in more than move as this is likely her only chance to run on the hill till fall with the hill getting re-sodded soon

6  Rosarita

9  My Pamilla

4  Q' Viva
