Santa Anita for Saturday 18 June 2016

One year ago my friend and assistant handicapper for The Racing Digest, David Gordon, passed away. He was one great guy and 56 was far too young to leave this earth. David Gordon was a kind man who was an accomplished actuary by profession but also the best "part-time" handicapper I have ever known. I always felt as if he would easily surpass my handicapping prowess if he was able to put in as much time as I do. Dave was a state chess champion and competed with many successes at the national level in Bridge tournaments. He was one sharp guy to say the least. I miss him but I will always cherish and remember the many discussions we had about Thoroughbred racing and other topics.

OK card today. Early post for Sunday - Dad's day!

race 1    average clarity

7  Bedeviled   seemingly has caught an excellent spot as this is a soft looking group of high-priced maiden claimers to drop into out of MSW competition......and...... I doubt the connections will lose their youngster by way of a claim so the drop makes sense

8  Name for the Blame   nice grass sprint wake-up in his latest his 2nd start in the USA.....and I like the step up in maiden claiming (a very strong stat for the trainer) as it suggests this O'Neill runner is feeling good......and his pedigree to handle a conventional dirt route is good

9  Destiny Martini   last is OK......race 2 back is quite strong (albeit in a turf sprint) and is better than par for today's lower level.......1st on the dirt appears to be the ? mark......pedigree to handle seems fine

4  Can't Touch That

race 2    average clarity

3  Pricess Ashlyn   believe this Ken Black filly greatly benefited from a layoff grass race as her a.m. work since on the dirt SA training track sure hints that the sod muscled her up in a big way........and now she drops out of MSW racing

1  Time for Ebby   bad trip-a-rooo in lone start way back in May of 2015 in a MSW affair........excellent work tab hints she is returning ready........believe Sherlock is trying to win and also get her eligible for SA40Knw2

4  La Galy   4 of 5 lifetime racing endeavors fit fine here.....and she has never raced any lower than today.....not out of this by any means if she has held form

7  Miss Gutsy

race 3    average clarity

9  Old Man Lake   seems to be on the rebound and if the bounce back continues this Alw 16,000s is a great spot to face easier and not be eligible to be claimed

6  Comes the Dream   last win came two races back in the April 8th version of this starter alw one mile grass race.....claimed by Spawr in his last........and........ it is usually a sign of readiness when he gets Mike Smith to ride

5  Out of Patience   improving sort for Gary Stute and friends and now he makes a major rider upgrade to the hottest guy around in Pratt

8  It Behooves Me

race 4    below average clarity

5  Head South   very solid history at SA on the dirt (9 4 3 0) and at the distance of 7F ( 3 2 1 0)..........away since July of 2015 but he is training as if he is meant and ready fresh off of the bench for Palma and company......and the fact he is up for $50K today hints this is not a tune-up as they might lose him

1  Heir of Storm   failed 1st out after the Baltas claim but owns some sizzling drills since.....and Richard Baltas is more dangerous 2nd out after a claim than he is 1st out following a claim

4  Super Knight   in need of a little class relief and gets it today......and this Sadler runner appreciates the somewhat specialized distance of 7 furlongs

race 5    average clarity

3  Vinz Clortho   very impressive final time in his latest which was his 2nd lifetime start despite a poor trip.......believe he can even fall of some this afternoon and still take down this MSW affair if of course he receives a better trip

2  Ideal   10 to 1 in his last for a Hollendorfer returnee (in only a 6 horse field)  hints he wasn't fully cranked and that more can be expected today

1  Accelerate  bet hard in both lifetime races off of a few sizzling works and ran fairly decent (not great just decent).....continues to work "big" in the a.m......needs to produce the same in the p.m. if he hopes to graduate today

8  Sense of Glory

race 6    above average clarity

11  Liam the Charmer   broke his MSW by 5 1/4 lengths on the sod in his last with 1st time Raffy......could have broken his MSW 2 back by at least that if it wasn't for a rare brutal trip by Prat.....remains sharp in the a.m.....Raffy stays up

10  Ralis   somewhat inconsistent but he has run some nice efforts vs. quite bit better......seems to like racing at 9 furlongs......should be a major player

6  Arcature   smooth runner and a smooth grass rider these days in Prat......and trip overcomes ability (potential) many times on the turf

1  Lucky Bryan

race 7    average clarity

1  Tengas Ransom   has run some awfully strong races not to have graduated as of yet.....and the abbreviated sprint distance he faces today appears to be to his benefit

2  Tatar   Ed Freeman has become rather efficient with getting MSW 1st timers ready to roll......and...... mom sure has been prolific tossing 5 winners from 5 starters

7  Lovely Anzl   useful MSW debut and the cut back in distance of a full furlong appears to be a plus......nice reassuring work since his debut hints he exited the race in good shape

3  Counturluckystars

race 8    average clarity

4  Songbird   might be the best three-year old in the U S of A regardless of sex.......likely will have to go bad or get a trip from you know where to lose

7  Sutton's Smile   consistent sort should be moping up late likely hoping for 2nd.....or a miracle

1  That's a Lady   best on dirt and Sadler and company realize that now.......lifetime best in last to break her maiden.......very sharp in a.m. since......seems well prepared in her attempt at a little "black type" here

race 9    below average clarity

5  Golden Light   on the improve and she sure is better bred for a route than a sprint and her grass sprint 4 weeks ago is rather good.........and she owns some early jock has a good opportunity to save some ground thru turn one and be forwardly placed in a large field and avoid a bad trip

8  Haute Style   plenty of furlongs put into this Lewis 1ster and I love that Desormeaux has the call as he is quite dangerous when he rides for a trainer that he often doesn't ride for......and then there is has tossed 8 turf winners....that's consistency

2  Shehashteritestuff   nice turf sprint gimme in MSW debut by Mike Smith.....3 useful works since........full throttle go today with a resurgent Drayden Van Dyke up

1  Rebarules Again

7  Unusually Talented

4  Warm Endowment
