Santa Anita for Friday 8 July 2016

I wonder if Santa Anita ever considered the tall task of trying to run their grass races elsewhere because the lack of entries for the dirt races has hurt them and sure is getting old for the gamblers, trainers, owners and most likely the racing office as well.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    above average clarity

4  Mr Larson   bad trip in MSW debut hides an effort that is better than appears in print.......broke a little slow and ran too wide from a nasty post (post 10) for a two-year old at five furlongs....blinkers on to help him focus.....two sharp drills at LA since his debut

2  Zen Deputy   decent debut running 2nd with not the best of trips and Diodoro must like the way his colt exited the race as he steps him up in maiden claiming for his 2nd start.....and these days Robert Diodoro makes all the right moves

5  Curly's Waterfront   Philip Oviedo is quietly having a very good meeting and he seems to have this 1ster training well enough to be dangerous in his debut....last work showing is quite good and was out of the gate at SA...... and...... at today's 5F distance

race 2    average clarity

2  Olotta Shaken   looking for a vastly better effort today turf to dirt as the works since her grass race are markedly improved......mare should be on or near the lead from the get go

5  Sheswildnfree   last was the obvious gimme in a protected race (off of the 2 month layoff) to drop and come back in short rest where she has a shot to compete for the top prize

4  Entebbe   seems better on dirt than the turf......might come flying late if the 1 and the 2 (and maybe even the 5) press the issue in the early stages

race 3    below average clarity

5  French Alps   vastly improved effort in her last running very wide in a one mile allowance grass race and still only losing by 3/4's of a length ........claimed by Molly Pearson in the race and she puts her newbie on the dirt where she is 1 for 2 lifetime

2  Light Striker   lone deep closer in the race should trail the field - relax alone in the rear - save ground - and come flying late and without much traffic with only 5 horses signed up for this race

1  Desert Madam   Spawr is awfully good 1st out following a claim and especially so when he gives his new shooter plenty of time off since his claim......and 7 weeks off qualifies for that

race 4    average clarity

3  C W Road   by far at her best on the SA dirt and this is the last opportunity on it until Fall....and she just ran her lifetime best in her latest in her 1st attempt at a dirt route.....same rider - distance - and level today

7  Goodlookinwife    blinkers on and dropping from MSW racing to maiden claiming......both are strong stats for Phil D'Amato and apply here..........away from the game since April but seems ready fresh with some tight interval works

5  Sweet Treat   Cliff Sise is much more dangerous with 2nd time starters and I like that Desormeaux is aboard as he sure is riding well and seems to be getting on live horses for the most part

4  Space Cadet

race 5    average clarity

2  Ajac   (6 1 2 3) racing on the SA dirt at 6F or 8F......so......7F seems like a good fit.......just broke his maiden in latest and worked a 4F bullet since......believe up for a good effort again despite T C Baze getting off to ride our 2nd selection

3  Selection   best on the SA dirt and lone win came turf to dirt.......turf in last and dirt today .......and...... arguably his best ever was at today's 7F.......2nd pick because he sure likes to hang in the stretch when push comes to shove

1  Dothraki   last on the grass is much better than appears in print as he broke slightly tardy and ran way too wide.....did well to only get beat by 4L.......cut back in distance to 7F should be a good fit coming off of dirt and turf routes

5  Awesome Encounter

race 6    average clarity

1  Wake the Dawn   most aggressive work series for the given level for a Mulhall laid runner in many a moon.....and she and Pedroza have been rather deadly for an extended period of time

2  Swissarella   very dangerous when this mare gets the early lead and especially running a mile on the dirt at SA......and she sure faces a lack of early speed.........so you know Maldonado will have the pedal to the metal when the gate opens

3  Barbara Beatrice   deep closer should move forward 2nd out after the layoff and the sprint turf layoff effort wasn't bad.......but.........she sure will need more pace up front than anticipated

race 7    average clarity

5  Masochistic  laid up since October with a major injury.......but if he is "right" he is capable of running a BC Sprint like winning effort/fig ........his preparation for today's layoff run hints he might be up to something close to that today..........and he is 3 for 3 at today's 6F distance

3  Cherubim   rather hidden effort in his latest running wide up on a strong pace in a race that yielded a final time of 107:4......I assigned him 8 lengths of position/pace adjustment........he was beaten by 7L.......do the math

6  Glacken Too   fell off in his latest but his lifetime best was run two back off of 5 weeks rest and at today's distance......runs off of 5 weeks rest again today and returns as a 1st time gelding.......seems dangerous

race 8    average clarity

4  La Baresina   Craig Dollase has won with 4 of his last dozen maiden claiming 1st timer starters and appears to have this mare ready to roll at 1st asking........starting at the bottom MC level makes sense as she is a five-year who has had set-backs in the past

2  Tuscan Sun   Karen Headley 1st timer has put in copious furlongs of work.......hard not seeing this filly finishing well.........mom has tossed 3 winners from 3 starters

6  Mum's Forest   nice layoff run in her last which was her 2nd lifetime start......ran 3 wide stalking the pace......might be the one to beat depending if and how much she moves forward today 2nd out following the 13 month layoff

5  Royal Red

1  Tooluckysupermoon
