Del Mar for Saturday 23 July 2016

Some kind of special Grade 2 this afternoon in that if the BC Classic was run today they would likely be 2 of the 3 top choices (California Chrome - Frost - Dortmund). Handicapping wise I would rate the race card a 7 on the 1 to 10 scale on things.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    above average clarity

3  Ketos   outside of one turf attempt this colt is on the improve.....and his latest is disguised by running 4 wide up on the pace.......earned a solid Santucci adjusted for pace and position fig.......away since 7 May but is training awfully well including a best of 16 bullet 6F work at Dmr a week ago

6  Papa Papa Papa   returned to the race wars as a much improved individual following a long layoff........3 reassuring works since and a step back up into the MSW ranks.....hints that he is likely to make a necessary forward move this afternoon

2  Patron   excellent work regiment for this unusual Baffert 1st starter........unusual in that he is a German bred......seems meant in ready

7  Exhale

race 2    average clarity

4  Avicii   five-year old mare broke slightly tardy and ran way too wide throughout.......and now cuts claiming price in half and runs at a distance that suites her better.....seems somewhat set up for today

3  Q'Viva   believe she is at her best on the Dmr dirt so you know Ellis will have her ready to take advantage of the limited chances to run at this relatively short meeting

1  Easter Fever   dangerous speed here and has a good speed rider up and Gonzalez is off to a hot start at the meeting

race 3    average clarity

4  Banze No Oeste   Peter Miller invader from Brazil had some talent competing in his homeland but sure was placed ambitiously for a large portion of his career......placed where he fits today and he sure is training as if Miller knows what he needs.....and he gets a good grass rider in the saddle in Florent Geroux

1  Hobbits Hero   very consistent grass horse......very consistent rider........and a very consistent trainer.......mix in a good post and you have a major player this afternoon

7  Fusaichi Samurai   very consistent dirt runner for Baffert and company..........and...........he owns a pedigree that should handle turf and he might even prefer it......if he does "prefer it" he is rated too low......jock is hot

6  Palasolo

race 4    average clarity

2  Adorable   useful MSW debut for this Baffert baby and likely is feeling good for Bob to bring her back off short rest.........and........the extra 1/2 furlong (1st 6F of the year for two-year old runners in S Cal) should be a plus and won't be for many in here

4  Light of the Moon   MSW debut was compromised by a wide journey......Smith stays up and like our top selection six panels should fit this filly.........trained by Hollendorfer who year in and year out does a great job with young fillies

6  Princess Coco   useful needed 1st start (no support at the windows at all) Keith Desormeaux is much more dangerous with 2nd time starters so you can expect more this much more is the question mark

1  Auntjenn

race 5    average clarity

3  Atomic Rule   consistent on the grass and the AW.......invaded from GG last summer and won for 50K......once again invades from GG this time up for 62.5K and does so seemingly sharper this year than last.......and same jock as last year.....things sure point to another strong effort

4  Itsinthepost    seemingly never sharper but that "sharpness" was produced at Santa Anita........can he keep it going on the Del Mar  grass.......we shall soon find out

1  Metaboss   nice pick up by D'Amato and company.......and you know the outstanding turf conditioner will have his new shooter ready so as to get the added money paid to an out-of-state shipper that wins 1st into Dmr

8  Perfectly Majestic

race 6    average clarity

5  Sorryaboutnothing   lifetime best was his lone race ever run on the Del Mar dirt and the effort is disguised by a very bad trip.....last at SA at today's 7 furlongs is par like.....nothing wrong with par but with the change in surfaces he should produce better than par running on a surface he really appreciates

7  American League    here's my comment prior to his latest:   "last 4 efforts run on conventional dirt all fit and his last 3 are disguised.......his latest is the most hidden of them all as he dueled inside on a very bad rail day at Lrc and predictably cashed it in.....and he runs as a 1st time gelding today and with the how are his recent works?......answer:  impressive and then some".......ran another tough trip race.......caught wide up on a decent pace......sure seems due for a good trip

6  Classico   last 4 races up for a claiming tag (4 3 1 0).......a little short of what I think our top two choices are capable of but you have to like the consistency........especially since this colt usual stays out of trouble

8  Swiss Minister

race 7    average clarity

2  Lady Valeur   2 for 3 on firm rated near bullet 5F turf work (2 of 22).......believe she is sitting on her best ever and has the right post and rider to take full advantage of her sharpness

1  Belvoir Bay   you don't see too many turf Stakes winners win by 7 1/4 but this filly did in her lone race run under the guidance of Peter Miller.....that race was run way back in December but the solid works (very tightly spaced and numerous - a very good sign of extreme fitness) and the fact the Geroux comes in to ride hint she is ready to rock and roll at a high level

3  Be Mine   2 heads away from being a perfect 4 for 4 on the grass........and she has the right crew to keep the good times coming in D'Amato and Pratt

10  Stays in Vegas

race 8    average clarity

5  Ish   won by 12L at 7F two races back.....then in her last she was wide on a day the rail was the place to be.....she did well to snatch 4th place in a fast heat.....drops some today and unless she picks today to slip off of form she should be tough

10  Katy Drama   lone win was her only race ever on the Dmr dirt but she was put up for the win by disqualification.....and that's the rub as she appears to be a hanger......but she does get 1st time Bejarano and if Raffy can't do know the rest

8  Tooluckysupermoon   five-year old mare is on the improve and she will need to keep the trend intact to have a shot vs. winners today

2  Princess Kendra

race 9    above average clarity

6  California Chrome   the most accomplished horse on the planet should stalk Dortmund and likely attempt to overtake him late on turn two or down the stretch

2  Dortmund   8 for 8 on fast rated race tracks at 9 furlongs or less.....runs just fine fresh.........should be loose on the lead with the "Chrome" stalking.....sets up for quite the stretch duel.......really like that Stevens is now the jock on this fellow who is tough to get by down the stretch

7  Win the Space   very significant move forward in his last which was a Grade 1 affair at SA.......he ran the kind of effort/fig that would normally make him favorite in today's G2 race....but......this is no normal G2

race 10    below average clarity

4  Georgia Blue   1st two lifetime races fit and the debut race was in a grass sprint.....away since March but proven fresh and Drysdale isn't too bad with these kind......still......she does have something to prove running a route

6  Whistle Pretty   Hess 1st timer is training like she is meant and ready for her MSW route turf debut.......very strong drills for Hess who seldom pushes them hard in the a.m.........go to jock Desormeaux rides.......Hess has won once in his last 5 debuting on the grass and the horse paid nicely

2  Chuchotti   another 1st timer who looks dangerous at 1st asking and faces a group that doesn't look all that has tossed 3 winners from 4 starters all three of which won on the grass

9  Shazara

10  Sassy Ashley

1  She's to Blame
