Del Mar for Thursday 11 August 2016

I have had some very nice Arlington Million days over the years going way back to the inaugural. Not too shabby of results in 2013 & 2015 either. Chicago was my racing circuit for some 30 years until switching to Southern California. Great race card with 2 Grade 3 races and 3 Grade 1 races all well worth the price of the publication. Large fields and 8 of the 10 races are on America's top grass course.

Decent day at Dmr yesterday and I sure like that there are only two F & M races carded as the gals lack consistency some of which is of course biological.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

5  Agronomy   SCRATCHED keeps improving one baby step at a time just similar to our understanding of soil and plants.......very sharp in the a.m.......decent chance he finds the circle of joy this afternoon

1  Gavin Streetsense   1st time competing as a gelding and Baltas is really starting to heat things up.....sharp work tab hints the surgery has been successful

3  Snappy Jack   O'Neill 1ster is working as if he might be ready to rock & roll in his MC debut.........really like the way his works have steadily improved.....rate it about 50/50 that he is ready to compete at a high level

4  Super Touch

race 2    average clarity

6  Third Brigade   this gelding provided the only win at the meeting for Puype and sure appears to have a shot at another win for the struggling trainer......controlling speed starting from a decent post is likely to be loose.....thus.....tough in his 1st around two turns

1  Melville   much better off of short rest and that is the case today.....likely to get a nice stalk position.....needs about 1/2 dozen lengths of improvement and might provide it 2nd out after the layoff

4  Far Out Kailee   Chris Hartman finely got some luck winning his 1st race in S Cal with a perfect trip for his runner in yesterday's 1st......Hartman just snatched this gelding at the claiming box and he makes a major rider upgrade......gelding needs more than his last and has a decent chance of providing it 2nd out after the layoff and with a better rider up

5  Wrightwood

race 3    average clarity

6  Spin Forty   just popped lifetime best winning for fun in what might have been a very stress free effort as Fanning brings his new shooter back in 6 days......toss out only turf race which was run last summer as he had a brutal trip and was placed over his head.......should be prominent from the get go

7  Last One Standing   another claimer on the improve for Baltas (what's new).....2 for 4 on the grass and gets Stevens in his lone mount on the card....Stevens has been up for Baltas only once in the last couple of months and it was a winning ride

4  Jonny's Choice   very solid 8K claiming win in last.....big step up today but claimed by Mullins and he gets Prat to stick around.....like our top selection this fellow should be in the hunt from the get go

9  Donji

Long-shot consideration:   2 Bird E House   rebounding runner will need to come from far back but his last win was the last time he ran on the Dmr turf ......and...... he might get a solid pace up front to aid his late running style

race 4    average clarity

3  Westmont   rider upgrade and to a hunger rider in Theriot........two year old comes out of a decent heat of MSW runners and drops....and his debut was likely a tune-up with today's race always in mind

4  Enter the Code   last was poor but his debut two back fits......and a much more accomplished rider aboard today than rode in that debut.....trainer is ice cold (10 0 0 0) at the meeting.....has a chance to change that here

1  Third Party   fairly good drills for a two year old state-bred MC 1st timer and seemingly catches a soft field to start his racing career....dangerous

6  Eichel

race 5    average clarity

6  Rye   strong forward move 1st time with blinkers in latest......impressive hand ride home.......two reassuring works since........should come flying once again......1/16th less might hurt but still easy to put as top pick-a-roo

7  Chris and Dave   sSCRATCHED  ure took to the sod in latest his 1st endeavor on it......should be tough in this spot if he can handle the rigors of coming back in 6 days

8  Back to Bako   gets to run off of relatively short rest again like his solid effort two back.......and back to the jock in Gonzo who is rather hot at the moment

4  Thanksgiving Day

Long-shot consideration:   1  Atascaderan   continues to improve and his last improvement is disguised by a somewhat wide trip up on the pace........only one so so grass race to his credit but he is a better horse these days and is bred decently for it.....deserves another shot on it

race 6    average clarity

8  Secret Thorn   very solid work series for this Blacker 1st timer and Blacker really doesn't push them that hard in the mornings......not crazy about those that have run and it is easier to get a 1ster ready for only 5 1/2F..... so...... it is all 1st starters in my selections

4  Her Royalness   works indicate readiness and it is the only mount of the day for Mike Smith......maybe chilly rider and a cold trainer can help each other out here

3  Summer Scorcher   tightly spaced series of works for this Gaines first timer and I like that she finished things up with 2 straight gate works both at Del Mar......dangerous

5  Funny Paper

race 7    average clarity

5  Easy Grader   very aggressive work series for this laid up Truman returnee (who broke her MSW in a solid time for the given day ) and the 15% for 2016 trainer goes to one of his "go to" guys in Raffy......1st turf but owns a strong pedigree for it....believe she is quite talented......hope she's ready to display it today

4  Moonie   five furlongs of sod is a good fit for this Freeman sprinter......often goes head to head in his races and the shorter distance helps her hold together

8  Star of Munster   never sharper and tries the grass for the 1st time with a stellar pedigree for it......dangerous

1  Silver Mojave

race 8    above average clarity

4  Clickjab   very big races 2 and 3 back considering today's significantly lower level....even last fits and in that race he was ridden by a rider that really does fit vs. the "big boys" that S Cal racing is known for.....works say very ready and he best be as he is likely to be claimed today

5  Adir   improving but he will need another move forward today and a significant one to deal with our top choice if he runes the race I think he will

7  Specimen   how is speed doing today because this five year old sure pressed some stout fractions 1st time with blinkers in his last.....appears loose in this spot

1  Coltonsgrace

2  Bundesliga

8  Princely Warrior
