Del Mar for Friday 2 September 2016

I like the race card for today. Let us call it a 7 on the 1 to 10 scale of things.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    above average clarity

3  She's Got Style   par like effort in her 2nd lifetime start in a nice forward move.......and it is hard to have a more significant rider upgrade than we get this afternoon for this Ken Black five year old mare

5  Shehastheritestuff    regressed some in her latest but her effort 2 back is solid running 3rd in a key race......recent decent 5F work hints she is rebounding to that better effort this afternoon

4  La Premiere Etoile   likely needs her best to date if our top two selections run the race I think they will......cut back in distance appears to be a plus and might be the catalyst that helps her produce her best ever

1  Southern Drawl

race 2    average clarity

2  Elwood J   solid MSW debut at Dmr on 29 July and he has been able to put in 21 furlongs of work since.....that is impressive and hints of a healthy and very fit youngster to take on 6 furlongs (or more) for the 1st time which is the case for everyone in this race except the one horse

4  California Diamond   ran a faster 1/4 in all three of his lifetime starts than anyone in this field has ever run......should be on the lead this afternoon (and if he isn't he obviously has run just fine without it) amazingly for the 1st time in his career...... and .....with a positive rider change

5  Milton Freewater   solid time/win in MSW debut at Lrc in April........decent return to the races in his next start 3 1/2 months later at Del Mar......most youngsters need a race over the surface and if that applies to him as well he should be a factor in the overcome of this race

3  Upstaging the Cast

race 3    below average clarity

10  American League   this three year old and his connections have been extremely unlucky (and that includes his only grass race) as he has had many things work against him trip wise with most of it not of his making........I know of no one who has worse luck at the meet.......overdue for something to go right

2  Trust Your Gut   Glatt and company means business here as they are willing to enter this race at 10K less to get 4 lbs off......cut back in distance is a plus and maybe especially so at Dmr where he is 1 for 1 at the distance and ran a sold time for a November two year old......Glatt has been quite consistent all meeting long

7  Barton Lodge   not the best of trips in all three U S of A races......likely needed his last and returns as a 1st time gelding.......the O'Neill magic has been missing for quite some time but he sure seems overdue to bust out of his slump

9  Imperious One

race 4    average clarity

11  Trump Diesel    trainer is dynamite with laid up drop downs and especially when they train well and that sure is the case for this MSW to mdn20K drop......and he returns as a 1st time gelding

8  Big Champion   decent MC debut and claimed in the race by Glatt who is quite a bit better than average 1st following a claim......likely needs a forward move........between the notion he can make a logical forward move with a race under his belt and that Glatt is solid 1st off of a claim you would think that he will

1  Malibu Dude   last might have been a tune-up of sorts as Puype has won his last 5 of 8 dropping a given horse multiple levels which is the case here......seems quite dangerous

4  Blue Navy Blue

race 5    average clarity

2  Shysheisnot   no shot in latest at two claiming levels higher with a very wide trip following a slightly slow start after 6 straight rides by the same jock..........Machowsky goes to his top guy in Pereira who is 5 for 8 riding for the trainer over the last couple months....and that trainer has won 9 of his 1st 20 starts at the meeting

4  Lady's Lunar Luck   very consistent sort handled the multiple level step up in her latest......and the cut back in distance sure looks like a plus for this eight year old mare.....and her trainer is really starting to heat things up of late

9  Merilore   trainer is rolling now following a slow start attempting to break into the tough S Cal circuit.....and the Hartman/Gonzalez trainer/rider combo has been a big part of the success........Hartman is a stout 30% win 2nd out after a claim which is the case here

8  Lob City

race 6    average clarity

3  Start to Finish   very solid final time fig.......the best in this group....and might be the quickest early......easy win in last and solid 5F works since........should be tough from start to finish

9  Sausalito Sunset   nice move forward to easily win in her 2nd lifetime endeavor.......she got away with a very soft pace which might leave her feeling awfully good exiting the race with such a stress free run

1  Red Apple   like our 1st two selections she graduated quite easily in her 2nd lifetime start......definitely seems like the best of the runners who are likely to come from off of the pace.......not out of this by any means

2  Gemini Journey

race 7    average clarity

5  Long Hot Summer   dynamite history sprinting on the grass or the AW (6 4 1 1).....and she was so much the best in a small Stakes 5F turf race at Dmr in her last.....broke a little slow and ran 4 wide.....and still nearly got up in time to win.....no easy task to say the least

2  Lily Pod   showed she can handle five furlongs of DelMar turf in her only race ever on the grass.....and she just ran her lifetime best on the dirt with her 1st under the guidance of the D'A.......no less than 5 works since......should be a handful from the opening bell

9  Paquita Coqueta   well proven in Chile in abbreviated turf sprint races......ends up in the more than dangerous Mandella barn for her 1st in the good old U S of A.......and the works suggest she is meant and ready to roll in her 1st start in her new home

8  Pretty N Cool

race 8    average clarity

10  L.A. Tower   Jamie Gomez has had a decent year with limited starters and he sure appears to have this youngster well trained and ready to compete at a high level in his maiden debut.......really like his 113:3H work ........1/2 furlong longer than he needs to cover for today

7  Huevos Rancheros   stopped badly in his 2nd lifetime start but it sure was better than his 1st.......and he flashed significant early gas......if Pedroza can harness him in some early he might quit today

4  Nicky Numbers   Callaghan is 2 for his last 6 with maiden claimers 1sters .....and mom tossed 2 winners from 2 starters and both were able to win at two.....like our top choice a dangerous 1st timer

9  Derby Music

8  Hawks Peak

6  Two Thirty Five
