Santa Anita for Friday 30 September 2016

Challenging opening day card at Santa Anita which should yield some nice payoffs in quite a few of the races. Let's hope we take part in a few of them. Fabulous race card Saturday at Santa Anita with 5 Grade 1 races.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    below average clarity

6  Peppermint Zip   away since June but appears ready to roll off of a strong work regiment and the fact that Prat takes the mount with a record of a win and a 2nd in 2 mounts on the colt.......believe the outstanding grass rider will try to get a nice stalk position

2  Eddie Haskell   bred extremely well for the sod and it showed in his last in a 5F turf sprint at Del Mar.........should be in the hunt from the opening bell...........he does lose Prat to our top choice

4  Beaumarchais   colt had a short lead setting a solid pace in a two turn grass race at Dmr and held nicely for 2nd with a gap of 4 1/4 lengths to 3rd.......claimed by Blacker and he put a nice bullet work into his new shooter which cost his owners $50K.......1st on the hill is a ? mark but if he handles it the cut back n distance should be a plus

9  Tribal Fighter

Long-shot consideration:   10 Banze No Oeste   toss out last as he appears to dislike the dirt.........race two back on the grass turned out to be a very key race (and a fast time).......trains sharp.........and Miller doesn't drop into claiming which he seldom is afraid to do........3rd time in the USA since arriving from Brazil might be the charm

race 2    above average clarity

8  Jimmy the Juice   nicely improved since Belvoir claimed 3 races back.......fired his lifetime best in latest pressing a solid set of fractions in a fast heat of mdn20K runners......ran better than par when you adjust for rider/trainer combo

4  Gavin Streetsense    very solid history when sprinting........cut back in distance should be a plus.......likely has some physical concerns but he shows a reassuring 4F drill.....seems likely to be a major player in the outcome of this race

1  Nowhere Man   never a good sign when a $300K purchase debuts in a mdn20K but the connections are dangerous and the a.m. preparation is OK

6  Chief Tiger

race 3    above average clarity

4  How About Zero   debuted in a state-bred $150K stakes race and did not embarrass herself with a solid 2nd with large gaps to 3rd and 4th......should be a handful in today's MSW affair and with very reliable (trainer/rider/owner) connections at the controls

2  Tiz Seeking a Win   nice MSW debut and the effort is somewhat disguised as this two-year old filly was compromised about 3 or 4 lengths at the start.....and she might not have been fully cranked up as she went off at 13 to 1 in only a 7 horse field

3  Ms Wakaya   bet hard in her debut especially early on and ran a good 2nd with a so so trip.......likely will still need to move forward to be competitive vs. our top selection if she runs her the rider switch to Desormeaux

5  Bissou Bissou

race 4    average clarity

3  Buymeabond   rider upgrade to one solid East coast rider who should work out a nice mid pack ground saving trip.........six year old gelding does the majority of his winning at today's one mile turf distance......high percentage trainer

7  Sky Preacher   switch to Bejarano is almost always significant when it comes from the Baltas barn.....2 for 5 at one mile on the sod......0 for 5 at other turf distances......four year old drops to the lowest level of his career

4  Fritz Johansen   another with a positive rider change in this case to Prat who dominated the grass races this summer at SA.......Prat has a good opportunity to sit in a nice stalk position likely saving ground thru turn one

5  Which Market

race 5    average clarity

7  Trump Diesel   might be a good claim by Agarie and friends of a three-year old who ran a solid layoff effort that fits OK at today's higher level......and if he builds off of the effort which I think he will he fits very well at today's three-year old 25K level

1  Trust Your Gut   trainer is very dangerous when he drops multiple levels like today......and Glatt cuts the claiming level in half for this three-year old from $50K to $25K.......good sign Bejarano sticks around

5  Touching Rainbows   1 for 1 at SA on fast rated dirt.......I like that he passed on the little Lrc meet and has steadily worked since for the start of the Fall SA meting.......another with a top jock (Prat) that sticks with his mount

6  Jes Jaa

race 6    above average clarity

7  Justin Squared   won his 1st 3 lifetime starts convincingly then you can toss out his next two lifetime races as he was caught setting two of the faster 1/2 mile paces for the given distance and track for all of 2016......doubt that occurs today

8  Hunt   loves the SA hill grass course (4 for 5) and retains Pratt who knows him well and rides him with an abundance of confidence

1  Lady Shipman   brilliant filly who is 12 for 17 on the grass definitely fits vs. the guys and she is mostly placed 3rd because this is her 1st ever on the tricky SA 6 1/2F grass course

10  Ambitious Brew

race 7    average clarity

3  She's My First   caught wide close to a nasty set of fractions for a two-year old baby route race.......see ya Gonzo.....hello Bejarano for 2nd lifetime start once again around two turns.......quite the advantage for a two-year old to have already competed at 8 furlongs

2  Czarina    debuted in the same race as our top selection but wasn't as impressive.......but......her a.m. work is improved and she did after all go for a cool $$$$$1.5 million at sale one year ago at Kee

7  Majestic Quality   steadied extremely hard at the gap in a MSW 6 1/2F sprint at Dmr in latest........gathered herself and ran well after that........trainer Keith Desormeaux is very dangerous with his two-year old runners that he sends long for the first time and his bro sees fit to ride this filly for the 1st time

5  Tap It All

race 8    below average clarity

5  Kentuckian   looked like a star in the making following his G3 win in May of 2015.....but things haven't gone well since.......Hollendorfer shakes things up with the blinkers put on his colt for the 1st time today....and the works look as if the equipment change is to date was at SA at today's distance.....rebound city......or.... soon to be a claimer........we shall see

4  Texas Two Step   decent 2nd despite not the best of trips in his latest.......but what we really want is his last endeavor at SA which was 4 races back......should have been top pick if that is what we get today

3  Sky Meza   only his 5th start since starting his career on the 4th of July 2015.....but......he seems to be improving with each and every race and if that continues today he is a major player in this seven furlong race

race 9    average clarity

6  Ohio   very consistent racing from 6F to 8F on the sod.......Paul Lobo runner has broken the 1:35 barrier in his last two one mile grass races which sure stand out here.......definitely is quite good in turf sprints but 1st on the hill is a small ? mark

8  Guns Loaded   went bad out East but has had enough time off to recover......and if he has he gets to compete at his favorite turf configuration......very solid here if O'Neill has him fully fit

5  Toowindytohaulrox    low percentage jock on the grass but he rides this fellow quite well partly because he rides him all of the time......six year old seems at his most reliable running off of 4 weeks rest..........last raced on 3 Sept. ......30th of September today

1  McHeat

7  Secreto Primero

11  Boozer
