Santa Anita for Saturday 22 October 2016

Decent day yesterday even with a nasty DQ in the nightcap. 13 Days until the Breeders Cup at Santa Anita.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

3  Frandontjudge   blinkers taken off in last and the move by Brocklebank woke this cheap claiming mare up.....two reassuring works since and a soft group to face.....won't be 16 to 1 this time around

4  Individual Design   was beaten squarely by our top choice quite easily in her last.....but........2nd out after the layoff today and she gets to run on a dirt surface she appreciates (6 3 1 0).... and ......also at a distance she likes (9 5 1 1)

5  Smil'n From Above   32 2nd's and 3rd's combined but only 3 wins......the epitome of a hanger.....but she seldom runs at today's distance and I'm not sure why as she is ( 5 1 1 2) at the distance.......interesting

race 2    below average clarity

1  Hawk's Eye    1 for 1 at the distance......(3 2 0 1) at SA.......(3 2 1 0) for Quinonez........versatile sort who is capable of succeeding on or off of the pace........a superfecta of reasons to back this seven-year old

4  Carlsbad Mountain   2 wins and 2 2nd's in 5 starts at SA this year on fast rated tracks.......claim back by Diodoro was in a protected race in his last and might have been out for air with his favorite surface (Santa Anita) starting right around the corner

3  Deep Consideration    very consistent sort but doesn't find the winners circle too often with 17 of 26 in the money but with only 2 wins....but then again those 2 wins came fairly recently.........5 and 8 races back respectively

race 3    average clarity

3  Star of Munster   always seems to fire a strong race when up for a rider in Baze and he knows this three-year old filly awfully well and has many successes on her......Baze likely will be full throttle from the get go to put away the only other speed horse in the race in the 4 horse

5  Sweet Hickory   lifetime best was her lone effort at Santa Anita which was run in July off of a long layoff.....2nd best race was her MSW maybe she will response well to getting ample time off since her last..... as in 7 weeks

2  Brooks All Mine   won turf route to 6 1/2 dirt sprint two races back.....turf route in last.......6 1/2 furlongs of dirt today.......seems well meant ......but she likely will still need her lifetime best today

race 4    above average clarity

6  Acceptance   very nice return to the race wars.....dueled 3 wide up pressing a stout pace and still ran 112 flat on the SA hill.......started career off like he was something special.....solid a.m. work since his last.....seems poised for a strong race today and seems likely to get a much better trip on or stalking the lead.......and with 9 lbs less to carry

3  Boozer   pretty much a hill specialist and those that are are usually dangerous hill race after hill race.....and Hall of Fame jock Stevens knows this Mark Glatt six-year-old quite well.......might sit pretty all by himself behind the 1 and 6

1  Richard's Boy   another consistent sort on the turf including the hill where he owns 2 wins and 2 and's in 5 races down it.......likely will stalk our top selection or possible even grab the lead

5  Mana Strike

race 5    above average clarity

4  Mastery   training as if Baffert has yet another good young colt who went for sale at a cool $425K......he is showing both speed and endurance in his a.m. work.......Bejarano gets the call

3  Absolutely Stylish   very aggressive work regiment for this Truman 1st time starter who went for $285K at sale at two.....plenty of furlongs put into this colt over a short period of time....doing well and likely meant and ready for his MSW debut......and gets the services of Kent Desormeaux who is off to a red-hot start at the fall SA meeting

8  Sheer Flattery   went off at 31 to 1 at Lrc in his MSW debut and ran awfully well for a Hollendorfer 1st timer with "zero" support at the windows......might have been a shock to the barn.....and might be much more cranked for today.....not out of this by any means if that is so

7  Stone Hands

race 6    below average clarity

(AE  11  Cut has a shot if draws in)

6  South Americain  sure like when Drysdale debuts a MSW with tightly spaced numerous drills like this colt shows.....and look who takes the mount......the best turf rider in S Cal with young unexperienced turf runners in Flavien Prat

2  Irap   1st time starter from the O'Neill barn owns a solid turf pedigree and was just purchased in March for $300K which is way above the sire's average purchase price

10  Highly Acclaimed     new sire Acclamation was one heck of a turf racehorse even better than his overall record would indicate.....with that in mind I am going to ignore the 2 dull dirt races to date.....and .......give this two-year old a shot at waking up with the switch to the has tossed two grass winners as well

7  Night's Watch

race 7    below average clarity

8  Swiss Cheese   always fires when competing at six panels (5 2 3 0).......good off pace jock in sprints in Fernando Perez......and he has won his last 3 of 8 teaming up with Hess......seeming likely to be a major player in tis race

7  Aperfectdaytofly   consistent sort likes contact to the front end of things and should be able to get that here......trainer doesn't ship very many but is often dangerous when he does

4  Royal F J   claim back by Carava (who has had this fellow for most of his career)  had a miserable trip in last......showed plenty of trainer/rider combo......significant step up.....but might be  a factor in the late stages

5  Success Rate

race 8    below average clarity

1  Moonlight Drive   very solid turf route races for this Baffert colt trying the SA hill turf course for the 1st time......last time he sprinted he won by 9L in an about 7F turf sprint in that Bejarano remains aboard for his 1st on the hill as he has gotten to know the three-year old well

3  Fueled by Bourbon   3 for 5 on the Santa Anita hill and 0 for 10 anywhere else.....and 3 for 4 on firm turf on the hill........he appears well prepared by Spawr for today's race

6  The Gomper   1st on the hill but handles the turf just fine and I sure like that he runs some of his best main track efforts at 6 1/2 and 7 furlongs.....believe there is a high probability he will appreciate the hill....and if he does he should be a factor in this affair

8  Eric the Trojan

race 9    average clarity

4  And Then Some   likely needed last and the race wasn't bad.......3 previous lifetime sprints all fit and each of them are somewhat hidden........3 nice drills since his layoff run hint a move forward will occur today.....sure should be tough if it does

11  Pop Pop's Pizza   both races in 2015 are better than par and one of them was run off of an extended layoff like today....gelding has physical issues so my guess is that Phil D'Amato won't waste a race with him

1  Lucky Days Ahead    nice forward move in 2nd lifetime race last out following a layoff should make him dangerous this afternoon if history repeats rider.....and hot trainer......can get a nice mid pack position in a race that should yield a solid set of fractions

6  Runbrorun

2  First Heir

3  Chief Tiger
