Santa Anita for Saturday 5 November 2016

Two day pick 6 carryover ($511,261) likely will make for one of the largest Pick 6 pools in California history today. There is racing on Sunday at Santa Anita. Racing returns to Del Mar starting on Friday.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

6  Sword Fighter   very strong MSW debut on the dirt caught 3 wide up on the pace and still manged to win going away ......that effort/fig fits fine here if of course he can produce similar on the sod......decent pedigree for it......and Miller can do no wrong this meeting

4  Harbour Master   consistent two-year old grass runner has already run on the lawn 6 times including his 1st in the good old U S of A in his latest......where.......he was blocked in the stretch 2 or 3 lengths or would have grabbed 2nd in a $100K Stakes like today.......should come roaring late from far back

2  Awsum Roar   NY bred has plenty of early turf speed and a good speed rider in Johnny Velasquaez to hold him together when the challenges emerge down the stretch.......and his trainer Wesley Ward is stout with grass sprinters

3  Partyinthepaddock

Long-shot consideration:   7  Oopper Wallah   useful 1st on the grass and also at a route showing a liking to the green carpet......cut back in distance and back in a much shorter time interval which both might lead him to a strong effort in his 1st ever down the hill and at a decent price.....trainer Matt Chew wins his fair sure in non Graded Stakes races.....and brings home many price shots at any racing level

race 2    above average clarity

4  California Diamond  by far the best credentials in this two-year old Cal-bred Stakes affair......and a very nice and reassuring work since her latest especially for a two-year old competing in her 7th race already....red hot rider/trainer team - 8 for the their last 20 as a combo thru last Sunday

3  California Clone   seems like the best opportunity to upset the top pick as this Sean McCarthy two-year old made a significant forward move (1st on the SA dirt) deserving of entry into this $200K Stks race......and I sure like the two tightly spaced decent 5F drills since his 8 Oct win to graduate.....should be in the mix from the get go

6  Harvest a Storm   nice race to graduate in his latest shipping out of GG to run on the dirt at Otp.......and the works since are vastly improved (and then some) at GG ........price shot is not out of this if he takes to the SA surface in his 1st run over it

5  Closing Time

race 3    average clarity

2  Acapulco   needs to be ready fresh off of the bench because she knocks herself out and she likely will need plenty of time off until she can compete again......all three lifetime grass races fit solidly here.......she has handled 3 different grass courses so I doubt the SA hill will be a hindrance .....Moore is 1 for 1 on her winning a Grade 2 in GB.....and as mentioned in the 1st race her trainer Wesley Ward is very stout with grass sprinters

9  Prize Exhibit   finally gets back to a race on the SA hill grass course where one of her best efforts to date led to a strong win in her only race down it.....solid mile turf race in latest disguised by a bad trip.....see ya Theriot.....hello Desormeaux

5  Juno   not that much speed in this affair and with the big field many coming from out of it will receive some trip trouble........so look for Espinoza to hustle this filly early who owns some tactical speed.......seems dangerous at a price with a good trip and favorable pace scenario in her favor.......she might make Bleeker proud today

1  Wild At Heart   consistent sort has dirt efforts (which includes her last) that fit provided she handles her 1st on the grass just as well......not the easiest of posts but she drew the 1 hole in her last on the dirt and Smith worked out a decent trip and a 2nd place finish despite if it

8  Mehronissa

race 4    below average clarity

4  Yellow Agate   impressed many in her 32 to 1 MSW debut win (by only 1/2 length) as she went off the heavy favorite in a Grade 1 route race in her 2nd start....... and .......the public was right as she won......and her a.m. work since has never been better.....her trainer is very dangerous when he ships and especially when he ships coast to coast.....two turns is a small ? mark

2  With Honors   on the improve and gets to stay home to compete......Keith Desormeaux brings them around slowly so I believe this filly has some upside......and if she does she should be in the mix from the get go and likely will be stubborn in the stretch as she has been in all 3 lifetime starts

3  Valadorna   solid 6L win in 2nd lifetime start and 1st at a route......Mark Casse has had a terrific year and a good portion of his success is with today's jock up.....reassurring bullet 5/8ths bullet drill at Kee since her last.......Casse is very familiar with SA and knows what it takes to win

5  Sweet Loretta   might be rated too low as she has decimated her foes in all three lifetime races which were sprints......and.....Pletcher's two year old filly owns an excellent pedigree to get the distance.....but.....I'm a touch leery she can fire her best (at a route) off of a 2 month hiatus.....we shall see

12  American Gal

race 5    average clarity

1  Sea Curtis   Geroux landed here and he is a combined 10 for 12 on two others in this affair....so....it seems highly likely Chad Brown has this four-year old filly extremely sharp when it counts the most as in right before the Breeders Cup......liked her in the prestigious Beverly D at AP and she did not disappoint.....sat too far off of a slow pace in her last.....plenty of pace signed up today

8  Lady Eli   double barrel action from Brown as he trains our top selection..........brilliant filly is nearly a perfect 8 for 8 with her lone loss coming 2 races back off of 13 1/2 month layoff......and she loves fm (quick) turf.....welcome back to S Cal where she won the BCJvT......one note of caution for those of you who don't follow SA very much is that SA laid down a different grass course over the summer

3  Seventh Heaven   too consecutive stellar large field wins in Grade 1 races in GB .......then not so hot in her latest at Ascot off of a 2 month break......yet she ships overseas for today's race.....we have seen this maneuver in the past a few times for an O'Brien shipper to the USA ....rather sure a rebound is at hand today

5  Al's Gal   really has blossomed as a five-year old with 3 wins and 3 2nd's in 6 starts.....loses Geroux who I think highly of but gains arguably the best turf jock in America in Jose Ortiz......Maker's mare might get a nice ground saving stalk position in this spot with either speedy or slow runners inside of her.....and of course good trips become magnified in large fields

11  Queen's Trust

race 6    average clarity

5  A. P. Indian   hard to argue with 10 wins & 4 2nd's in 15 fast track races.......and six-year-old gelding is 5 for 7 at 6 furlongs.....and he has some versatility winning on or off of the lead

7  Masochistic   if this race was at 6 1/2 or 7 furlongs he would have been top selection......he is basically unbeatable at those two distances yet he is only 1 for 5 at 6F.......and has lost as the heavy odds on favorite in a few of them.....don't get me wrong he is still very dangerous and he is trained by one sharp trainer in Ron Ellis but the 1 for 5 at 6F makes it easy for yours truly to place as the 2nd choice

3  Delta Bluesman   lightly raced with only one race on September 17th since the 30th of July for this six-year-old and that winning effort in a 5F affair (likely didn't take much out of him) followed by one stellar work regiment might have him very wound up for a big race today.......31% trainer with 420 starters knows how to ship and win including in Graded races

9  Limousine Liberal

race 7    average clarity

2  Obviously   D'Amato speed-ball has handled the SA hill grass course decently in the past and appreciates very fast/fm grass and sure gets it with the new turf laid down at SA this summer......broke the 132 flat one mile turf barrier in last two races......should be tough if he has held form......will be on the engine from the get go and in a race lacking speed

5  Karar   invading French turf sprinter has really gotten good of late and done so on firm French turf.......stepped way up in her latest which was on Oct 2nd running a nice 2nd in an 11 horse Grade 1 field at Chantilly......1st time with the addition of Lasix....last fits and might even show more today

4  Home of The Brave   very solid campaign in 2016 in GB (4 2 2 0) with 3 of those races Graded affairs......and I like that Doyle comes in to ride as he owns all 4 lifetime wins for this four-year old colt.....has some early speed which could come in handy in this spot

12  Om   nice stalking style and Gary Stevens up.....that is one solid combination to aid this colt's chances of handling the SA hill in his 1st ever on it......comes into this race lightly raced and seems likely to put in a good account of himself if he does take to SA hill

10  Ambitious Brew

race 8    average clarity

2  Syndergaard   great post and an excellent speed rider up in Johnny V to open up a lead and never look back.......very grueling pace in latest and still nearly won his latest in a G1 at Belmont......not easy to repeat off that kind of race but the two solid 5F works since hint he is doing well

5  Classic Empire   very impressive 1st at a route to win by a wide margin in a G3 at Kee......the colt from the Casse barn had the blinkers put on for the 1st time and it sure worked as he broke well for the 1st time in 4 lifetime races and did it breaking from the 11 hole.....should sit in striking distance......very dangerous

1  Klimt   the 1st 3 posts and especially the one post have been more advantageous than most meetings at SA in dirt routes........last race for this Baffert two-year colt likely isn't good enough to take down this big race....but....his effort 2 back at Dmr is......very sharp tightly spaced strong works since......decent shot at a rebound

6  Three Rules   not beating much in Florida but he is beating his competition with authority......5 for 5 with the average winning distance an eye-popping six+ lengths.......hard to put a handle at how well he fits here but I wouldn't be at all surprised if he was in the thick of things in the late stages of this Grade 1

9  Practical Joke

race 9    average clarity

4  Flintshire   hard to beat an ultra-consistent grass cutter when the trainer is an ultra-stout grass trainer in Chad Brown......and his 6 year old should get a nice ground saving trip in what should be a slow pace.....and then there is J J Castellano up.......not too shabby of a turf rider

10  Found   10th race run this year and just ran his last two races on 15 October & 2 October and then shipped all the way from GB......usually I would say "no can play" but not when the trainer is Aidan O'Brien who is quite unorthodox but obviously very successful (filly is 17 for 20 in the exacta and most of that is vs. the boys)

12  Highland Reel   double barrel action from the O'Brien barn......very consistent four-year old marathon grass colt appears to like firm turf.....welcome to sunny California where it is more likely for the ground to shake than rain these days

6  Mondialiste   six-year-old is night and day better with Lasix which he gets today......and his trainer has been quite successful racing in North America.....and I like his efforts on this continent running off of short rest.......4 weeks since his last qualifies for that

11  Texas Ryano

race 10    below average clarity

7  Gloryzapper   shows up every start on the dirt and 4 races on SA are solid......1 for 1 at the somewhat specialized distance of 7F.......and seemingly never sharper in the a.m......should be in the mix from the opening bell.......average rider up but Elliot has looked good with horses that have some early gas

6  By the Moon   very good as a two-year old .......so so campaign at three........but seems to be getting her mojo back in the 2nd half of her four-year old year......runs well with ample time between starts and her trainer wisely and patiently gives it to her.....nice steady a.m. work....trainer knows how to ship and win

2  Haveyougoneaway    just keeps getting better.....and better.......and better........and better.......and at this point she just needs a repeat of her late summer N.Y. form to be a major player here.....and if she gets even better.....I've rated her too low

10  Wavell Avenue   not all that impressive since upsetting the apple-cart in last years version of this race run at Kee paying $22 to win........but she just hinted she might be poised for a rebound as she worked her best drill in quite some time following a small wake up in her latest at Belmont

8  Carina Mia

race 11    average clarity

2  Alice Springs   same post and same distance when she ran 2nd in the FillyBCJuv turf at Kee last year......and the race turned out to be a key one.........she shipped in from GB and ran with 4 weeks rest.......last race GB and this time around 5 weeks....same trainer and jock as well......two straight G1 wins prior to shipping.....should be tough

8  Tepin   by my book this gal is the best middle distance turf female grass runner in the nation......and better than most of the males to boot and especially those signed up for today.......7 wins and 2 2nds in her 9 eight furlong grass races........regular rider Leparoux stays aboard.....and she likes to sit close and should be able to stalk a couple of speed horses here

6  Photo Cell   quite the shocker in latest totally let out early first time with the red hot Kent Desormeaux aboard and hanging on at 29 to 1 for a big tome upset........believe she only has the 13 to put away and that is not the easiest of posts to grab a lead with......lookout if she gets loose again

5  Tourist  six year old horse is our 4th pick whereas rather amazingly our top 3 choices are all female..........this Mott runner has found trouble countless times especially with Lezcano........ the last two times Rosario rode he managed a 2nd and a 1st in two G1 affairs ......the G1 1st came 2 back at Saratoga.......I like that Rosario gets this horse closer up in the early stages.......can pull a shocker if he does today and works out a good trip

10  Linato

9  Ironicus

race 12    above average clarity

4  California Chrome   all 4 races run in 2016 are terrific and even though our 2nd choice ran a freaky good race out east in his last that one race isn't enough for me to place him as the most likely winner.......Chrome can add to the $13,432,650 he has earned to date......not too shabby for a Cal-bred

10  Arrogate   shockingly fast time run in his 1st ever at 10 furlongs and the time is supported by the fact he won the Travers by 13 lengths......so how has he trained since you say.........incredibly well........lookout if he can take the physical stress of day big races in a row

6  Melatonin    4 for 4 at SA and 2 of those races were at today's 1 1/4 mile distance in Grade 1 races at Santa Anita.....he won one of those G1's off of 2 1/2 months rest and another off of a 3 month break.......so 4 1/3 months off since his latest sure appears doable.......like his chances to upset if our top two choices knock heads early and often

2  Frosted
