Del Mar for Saturday 19 November 2016

Good times yesterday. Hope this decent looking card can keep the good times going this afternoon.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    above average clarity

2  Talma the Hawk   claimed way back in March by Belvoir and disappointingly had to be laid up until his return on the 29th of October......but the patience paid off with a solid 3rd place sprint down the SA hill turf course.......that race should set him up well for today's turf route......owns a pedigree that should appreciate the extra distance

10  El Super   difficult post (two scratches help out) but maybe not for this Mulhall four-year old colt as he has an abundance of route turf speed and Mike Smith will need to use it to clear the field and not get caught 3 wide or worse on the 1st turn.......solid shot if he can accomplish the task

1  Melville   lifetime best was his race two back and it was his 1st ever effort on the Del Mar turf........sprint turf tune-up in latest......full throttle go at a route today......good post and a better jock than who rode in his race 2 back.......seems best at today's one mile distance and his race 2 back at 1 /16 wasn't too shabby

9  Junior Gilliam

race 2    average clarity

7   Quorum of Joy   2 wins and a 2nd racing at the abbreviated sprint distances of 4 1/2F or 5 1/2F..........last time this gelding saw Del Mar was in August and he ran an eye-popping 2nd as he had very wide trip pressing a decent pace and still only was beaten by the win by 1 1/4 L

3  Finallygotabentley    last couple of races are quite a bit better than par for the 8K level and he was just snatched up at the claiming box by Diodoro who is awfully good 1st out following a claim.......so......a 3rd straight good race seems doable

5  Swiss Cheese   consistent sort and especially so on the Del Mar dirt.......best racing at 5 1/2 or 6 furlongs........both races with today's jock Perez in the saddle are strong.......a trifecta of reasons to consider this five-year old

8  Senator Bob

Long-shot consideration:  9  Brother Soldier   cut back in distance definitely appears to be a solid positive as does a significant rider switch for the better........15 to 1 morning line.......that price is definitely intriguing

race 3    average clarity

3  Law Abiding Citizen   colt has been "up against it" as he has caught two extremely strong MSW races in both lifetime starts especially his last at Dmr which was run in 56:1.......today I believe he catches an average group of two-year old MSW runners.......away since July but training great with 1st time blinkers........retains Mike Smith for the 3rd straight race

5  Fielder   works definitely suggest this Baffert MSW 1ster can run some but they also hint that he will be coming from off of the pace which usually isn't the case with most talented Baffert debut runners......whether he runs from out of it or not he likely will be a major player

1  Stone Hands   expecting much more from this O'Neill 2nd time starter as he had no support at the windows in his debut and ran like a horse that needed a race......blinkers off for today and a recent decent 5F gate work at Dmr.......solid owner/trainer/rider trio.......Mario Gutierrez must really appreciate their faith and loyalty

6  Big Hit

race 4    average clarity

7  Irap   nice looking MSW turf sprint debut down the hill 4 weeks ago.......solid 4F bullet drill one week ago.......seems sharp........and the owner didn't shell out $300K to have a turf sprinter.....solid roder/trainer/owner trio

5  Swinging Star   very wide trip given by Mike Smith for this colt's 1st ever at a route and the grass.......same horse with a better ride and he should be a big factor in the outcome of this race

1  Sergie   very very obvious up the track gimme (with no support whatsoever at the windows (39-1)) in his last which followed a strong 2nd (14 to 1) at a route on the grass......connections might be looking for a better price.......and a significant rider upgrade

3  Avalanche

Long-shot consideration:   8 Pacific Surf   no support at the windows in his MSW debut way back in Auguest.....works were very unimpressive for that debut dirt.......away since......adds blinkers for his 2nd lifetime endeavor.....vastly better a.m. work......good pedigree to appreciate a route turf race......interesting price shot and for a trainer who you don't get the chance to play many long-shots

race 5    above average clarity

3  Mastery   3 to 10 in debut and did not disappoint winning by 4 1/4L with a large 9 1/2L gap to 3rd....final time was stellar......3 good looking works since.....more or better seem to be in the cards today for this Baffert colt with a bright future

5  California Diamond   race number 8 today for this two-year old.....yikes.....but it is hard to argue with 5 wins and 2 2nd's in 7 lifetime races........placed 2nd mostly because those 2nd's were his only two races run at Dmr

4  Oopper Wallah   might be feeling good coming off of a grass route race and with plenty of endurance put in to finish up well at the extended dirt sprint distance of 7F

race 6    average clarity

7  Liam the Charmer   monster run two races back earning one heck of a large Santucci adjusted for trouble fig.....fell off about 6L in his next.......smartly has been given 2 1/2 months to get his mojo back........a.m. prowess hints he has......if he is up for a top effort he might be able to overcome some trouble and still win.....we shall see

3  Reflected Star   earned a good number and sure closed fast in the late stages and did so from rather far back.......and he ran 2nd by one length to a next out winner......Smith wisely sticks around

5  Fritz Johansen   exits the same race as our 2nd choice and he was even further back in the race following a bad start........showed some run in the stretch and sure has trained sharply since .......as if Miller might have tweaked something for the better in preparation for his 2nd start following a claim

1  Gangster

race 7    average clarity

9  Bobby Abu Dhabi   very good work series for this expensive Miller MSW 1st timer starter......really like the strong 6F drill and then 3 straight gate works to finish up his work at Slr......mom has tossed 2 winner from 4 starters and both were able to graduate at two

8  Match Play   rather cheap MSW 1st timer by Baffert standards ( only $65K at sale) but sure isn't training like one.....rather sure like our top choice this colt is ready to rock n roll in his debut into the wonderful world of thoroughbred racing

4  Lookin At Mossy   sprint - route - sprint manuever has been rather successful for Gary Sherlock in the past and the conditioner sure has been firing the last couple of months....... better.......than his record indicates......seems highly likely to be finishing up strongly

7  Gentrified

Long-shot consideration:   6  The Party Factor   big works prior to his MSW debut.....in the race he got caught way too wide and it was up on a nasty pace......works since the race continue to be impressive.....trainer is good with 2nd time starters and layoffs of 45 to 90 days (2 for his last 5 with 2 others in the money & 2 for his last 6 with the 4 others hitting the board respectively)

race 8    average clarity

7  Itsinthepost   very impressive efforts since Mulins took over the training duties 5 races back.....and this four-year old gelding loves the 1 1/8th turf distance.....solid rider/trainer combo

5  Atomic Rule   not my favorite turf jock up but Pereira has done well with this fellow.......trainer is hot.......and his six-year-old sure has trained aggressively since a nice win in his latest which was his 1st out after the Baltas claim.......should be able to get a nice stalk or mid pack ground saving ay least thru turn one

1  Play Hard to Get   handles the 9 furlongs of grass offered today......handles Del Mar sod.........and with Pereira landing on our 2nd choice we get a significant rider upgrade to Hall of Famer Gary ageless Stevens

8  Wanstead Gardens   by far at his best on the Del Mar turf

race 9    average clarity

4  Motutapu   away from the game for a year but if she returns the same filly she should take down this race.....and her works suggest she might.....as does the fact Koriner is using Theriot who has been on many live mounts for the trainer including a near win 2nd yesterday at 9 to 1 in the 6th race

3  Turf Club Queen   good history with a 7 lbs bug boy up (Lindsay) last spring and summer......7 lbs bug Solis gets his chance today.....the young man should be able to stay out of trouble as his mount usually breaks well.......dangerous

13 AE   Aloha Spirit   Miller 1st time starter sure is working well enough to be a player in this spot especially if our top pick doesn't fire......and mom has tossed 4 winners from 4 starters

5  Warren's Honey Bee

8  Point Bliss

11  Cecile's Diamond

7  Cosmic Beauty
