Del Mar for Friday 2 December 2016

I sure will be pulling for jockey Kent Desormeaux and trainer Phil D'Amato because if they have good days our selections should be right on track.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

9  Mintenized   D'Amato has won with 1/3 of his last 3 dozen first time in maiden claiming.......that is the case here for this three-year old gelding who has run 3 races (of 4 run) on the dirt that fit solidly at today's lower level

7  Little Mustard   appreciates the Del Mar dirt......appreciates the six furlong distance......gets both today.......seems likely to be a major player in this spot but he does have to get over a tendency to hang

5  Woodstock Memory   might have an endurance advantage as this three-year old has run 7 or 8 panels in all of his 8 lifetime those races he has flattened out late some....doubt he does today at 6F

8  St. Reno

race 2    above average clarity

2  Resky Business   impressive win in latest as this two-year old filly only had a short lead while setting a decent pace and she held together to win quite easily.......and 4 good-looking works since.......same or better seem to be in the cards today

4  Perfect Cocktail   believe this filly needs a small move forward to compete for the win if our top choice runs "her" race......and she might provide one as her trainer Keith Desormeaux has for the most part been firing on all cylinders...... better than his record at the Dmr suggests

3  Memories Galore   needs a significant forward move to take down this race and/or our top two selections to run dull efforts......stranger things have happened

1  Velvet Jones

race 3   average clarity

5  Interrogator   seems like a nice pick up for William Morey and friends of a colt who just graduated at Prx by a bakers dozen........1st on the grass but bred OK for it......if he does take to it he should be tough especially with one solid grass rider in Desormeaux

8  Crosscheck Carlos   can really fly early and with a rider who is decent with sprint speed types......only needs to hold together five panels........dangerous gate to wire potential

3  Rim Ditch   another who can really turn on the jets early if of course he handles his 1st ever on the sod......owns an OK pedigree for the turf but his trainer has not hit the board with at last his last dozen runners running dirt to turf........something has to give

4  Uncle Grumpy

race 4    average clarity

4  Zanab   exits a very fast heat at today's same level and didn't have a very good trip......see ya cold rider.....hello hot one in Van Dyke......last race was a sprint and today's race is a route..... but..... I doubt the change will hurt

7  Albeit   Dmr doesn't appear to be her favorite racing surface but she does drop quite a bit and O'Neill shakes things up with blinkers off for today......Doug is 27% win with his last 3 dozen dropping multiple levels

8  Open Enrollment   short on numbers but might be able to get loose and lonely on the lead and with an improving 7 lbs bug boy in the saddle......cold trainer in Eric Kruljac but still seems dangerous

6  Sundar Creek

race 5    below average clarity

8  Ciao Bella Rosa  two-year old filly has done little wrong in 4 lifetime route grass races except for winning (2 2nd's & 2 3rd's)......but Miller can do no wrong of late and especially with Arroyo who knows this youngster well....filly is at her best with short rest and gets it today

4  Paddy Jean   nice move in the desired direction in her 2nd lifetime start with the addition of blinkers on.....1st time Espinoza today and he and his agent sure have made the most of 20 mounts with 7 wins and 2 2nds thru Sunday...........cold trainer but this entry appears to be a "live' one

12  Domestic Vintage   very strong stretch run down the SA hill in her MSW debut.......doubt she was fully cranked as she went off 31 to 1......good endurance building works in preparation for today's 2nd start which is a turf route......nasty post but one sizzling hot grass rider of late in Van Dyke remains up

9  Ravissante

race 6    average clarity

2  Ain't Misbehavin   exits an extremely fast heat of open company nw's where getting beat by 10 wasn't that bad.....and I believe the race was an extended sprint tune-up (gimme) to be fully ready back vs Cal-breds up for the optional 20K......very sharp recent a.m. work supports the notion

4  Dr. Go   nice awakening in latest and the a.m. prowess since suggests the same or better can occur this afternoon.....Harrington ships in very few to Del Mar from LA but they are usually live when he does

6  Plain Wrap    speed improved 2 races back and then in his last it even got better.....might get loose here......and is he does....... he......................might....................go.....................all....................the...................way

8  Spud Spivens

race 7    below average clarity

8  Fritz Johansen  vast improvement and his lifetime best effort/fig 2nd out following the Miller claim........running lines suggest the 11 furlongs might be a bit too far.....but almost everything Peter Miller enters is running better than their history suggests and the magic can't be dismissed whatsoever

4  Danas Best   last win came two races back in the summer version of this 1 3/8 grass nw alw race......this D'Amato seven-year old also ran a decent fifth only beaten by 3/4L for the win in a Grade 2 in the summer of 2015 which was also at the 11 furlong turf distance......nice reassuring 6 work series since his last race which was on 14 Oct

5  Rye   quite the opposite of our top pick as he is somewhat short on numbers but he appears to want to run all day long .......likely will be motoring late from far back

7  Oscar Dominguez

race 8    average clarity

1  Kenzou's Rhythm   nicely improved since the D'A claimed 3 races back.....and it sure seems as if he has a fitness advantage having run 1/16 further in his latest at the seldom run distance of 1 1/16 for a cheap maiden claiming two last time he should be in the mix from the go get and be tougher in the stretch with the cut back in distance

6  Cast and Blast   decent efforts so far in two lifetime sprints.........sprint - sprint - route scenario/maneuver for this two-year old .........and with a decent pedigree to handle eight furlongs

2  Supreme Giant   seems likely to be in a nice ground saving near or on the front fact I would have rated higher if his trainer wasn't so unsuccessful the last couple of years racing at the major S Cal racetracks

3  Northern Grey

9  Dixie Pistol

5  Dynamic Ruler
