Santa Anita for Monday 26 December 2016

Opening day at a major racing circuit never gets old especially one as prestigious as Santa Anita. Very nice card put together by The Great Race Place. Next race day is Thursday and the start of 5 consecutive race days at SA.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

4  Perfect Couple   exits a very strong heat where she still earned a better than par (for the level) number despite being a 4 1/2L beaten 2nd.......and her previous two races were par like........should finish well coming off of 3 straight route races......tough brother team in Keith and Kent Desormeaux

3  Rcatcanscat   all three lifetime endeavors fit fine in this spot and one of them is hidden as she had a brutal trip in her debut.....seems likely to sit mid pack and like our top selection finish up well........solid off pace rider in Van Dyke remains up

8  Rally Back   maiden debut winning effort fits in this spot if Sutherland works out a good trip in her 2nd lifetime endeavor.......and if this filly moves forward she might still have a shot with a so so trip

6  Cioppino Pasadino

race 2    average clarity

2  Sawbuck    all three lifetime endeavors fit fine in this spot and one of them is hidden as this two-year old had a bad trip in his maiden debut.......if the 1st timers in this field don't show any early speed this youngster might be in control of the front end

7  Burnt Cognac   takes that magical drop from MSW racing to maiden claiming.......1st time competing with blinkers and showing improved a.m. work hinting the equipment change has improved this youngster

6  Classic Ruler   nice forward move in 2nd lifetime start and managed it stepping up one level.......and today this colt gets the opportunity to run at Santa Anita where he has trained most of the time

8  Schwarzenegger

race 3    below average clarity

11  Eleutheros   bet hard and he ran well in his MSW debut on 1 October at SA which was run only 1/16 less than today........youngster ran 2nd to a next out winner and there was a gap  6 1/4L to 3rd......in his 2nd start he broke a little tardy and rushed up into a brutal pace....fell apart badly.......plenty of time off to recover.....blinkers on and some strong 6F drills showing......seems poised for a rebound

5  Bronze Age   expensive purchase has a solid work regiment including 5 consecutive gate drills.....that tells me Bob Baffert wants him to put in a strong effort in his MSW debut......colt owns a pedigree that fits the extended sprint distance of 7F

3  Seau   double barrel action from Hollendorfer as he also trains our top selection........blinkers on for today and for a colt who already has shown somewhat hidden early speed.......route to 7F angle......top tier rider in Rosario up.....dangerous for sure

4  Law Abidin Citizen

race 4    above average clarity

4  Prime Attraction   strong effort/fig at one mile on the dirt in his last his 2nd lifetime start.......that effort is solid if he is capable of duplicating it on the grass today......if anything his pedigree hints he could be a "turf move up".......we shall find out

1  Rye Patch   by far his lifetime best grass race was his only race on the new SA turf course and that race was at today's 1 1/8 distance.......as usual he should be in the mix from the get go

2  Champagne Charley   nice forward move in his 2nd start in the good old U S of A at one mile on the turf.......and he owns a pedigree that screams the longer the better.......very sharp in the a.m. since his last.......seems highly likely to be a major factor in the outcome of this race

6 Buymeabond

race 5    above average clarity

5  Beautiful Princess   expensive 1st time starter for Baffert and company sure improved her a.m. prowess when she switched from LA to SA......and the fact she finished up her work regiment with back to back gate works suggests the connections are looking to win at 1st asking

10  Moon Kitty   bad trip disguises a par like effort that this filly ran in her MSW in a 5F grass race at Dmr........dirt today .....but......no problem if her 58:1H work on 13 Nov at Slr is worth a hoot........and then there is that guy Peter Miller.....the hottest trainer on the planet of late

2  Selcourt   John Sadler's first time starter has a strong work regiment and her sire is a stellar 20% with 1sters........and mom has tossed 3 winners from 3 starters ........believe she has plenty of potential and quite dangerous

7  Tizcool

race 6    average clarity

8  Richard's Boy   very consistent on the sod (11 5 4 0) including down the majestic Santa Anita hill turf course where he has 2 wins and 3 2nd's in 6 starts.......hot trainer.....hot 5F bullet work 5 days ago.......should as usual be in the mix from the get go

5  Ohio   sure like the rider switch for this fellow who has a solid history sprinting on the grass but was given a poor ride in his 1st down the hill in his latest.......Van Dyke is back riding well and is one of my favorite grass jocks coming from off of the pace in the hill races

11  Betty's Bambino   never easy to bring back a given runner off of a 22 month layoff but the works are good and Rosario accepts the mount......and if this six-year-old gelding is "ready" he gets what he loves as in a race down the SA hill where he is 5 for 6 win with 3 of those wins being by more than 4L

9  He Will

Long-shot consideration:   3  Stormy Liberal   decent history down the SA hill......runs well with ample time between starts - runs well route to sprint........gets both today........2nd out after the claim by Miller and the 1st run wasn't too shabby

race 7    average clarity

2  Lightstream   Brian Lynch has a higher win percentage in Graded races (very rare) than his overall record and knows how to ship and win........filly is stout at 7F (4 3 1 0) and she is 3 for 3 at the extended sprint distance for Leparoux......and she seemingly gets plenty of heat up front to flatter her late running style

3  Finley'sluckycharm   undefeated in 5 lifetime sprint races and her back to back 108:2 6F races at CD prior to today's big race sure makes her deserving of a shot in this prestigious Grade 1

6  Chao Chom   hard trying filly shocked our 4th choice in her last beating her in an eye to eye duel.....granted this is a significant step up but she has never trained better and likely is sitting on her lifetime best

7  Enola Gray

race 8    average clarity

4  Ten Blessings   sat one length off of a brutal pace and still drew off in the stretch to win by over 4L in his last which was at SA........believe he impressed his connections so much that they pointed him for today's significant step up.....and the works even by Bob Baffert standards are extremely impressive

7  Sharp Azteca   trainer Jorge Navarro wins races at an incredible rate as in 30% win over his last 500 races (21% in Graded races) and knows how to ship and win.......like our top selection he is coming off of a nasty paced 7F going away win......like his chances to handle the SA dirt as he has won on 3 different racing surfaces

2  Mind Your Biscuits   nice fast closing 3rd at odds of 15 to 1 in the B C Sprint at 6F.......0 for 3 win at 7F but with a 2nd and a 3rd.......and he is 2 for 2 at 6 1/2F......two bullet works since......one at Belmont and one at SA.......late runner should benefit from a lively pace just as he did in the Breeders Cup

9  Awesome Banner

race 9    average clarity

2  Blackjackattack    Hall of Fame rider Mike Smith stays with this Glatt three-year old hinting he can rebound off of a disappointing off the board finish in his latest......1st ever at one mile on the grass but the distance appears to be a good fit as he has won on the sod at 6 1/2 and 1/1/16.......Glatt hasn't won a Graded race in a very long time but might change that here

4  Conquest Enforcer   D'Amato takes over the training duties of this highly consistent grass runner who has done little wrong in 6 straight grass races following his MSW debut.......colt has easily earned the most purse money on the turf in this field...... and......he sure is working as if he is meant and ready off of a 2+ month layoff

9  Blackout   last two races are better than appear in print.....and his lifetime best run 2 back at Belmont was at one mile and he trained up to the race with turf works.......that is the case once again today and the grass works are more impressive this go around.......that hints the potential exists for a lifetime best today
