Santa Anita for Saturday 7 January 2017

Radar looks much worse than the forecast so we appear to be in for another off track and at least 2 of the 3 grass races getting yanked off of the turf. The extra study for years truly is getting rather taxing bu I am very happy for the beautiful State of California cutting into the water shortage.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

9  Bella Be Quick   veered outward rather badly as so many do from the outer-most post especially in their maiden debut...... and then she ran away from the rail for a good portion of the race on a day the rail and speed dominated.......did well to snatch 4th......blinkers on and a gate work since......D'Amato is waking up

5  Jeanjeannie    new trainer takes over and I like that Jacobson gives this filly a shot in a sprint as she has seen nothing but route races in her 4 race career......best ever was run in her only race on the SA dirt......and the strength of the effort is hidden

4  Barbara Jo   owns some decent early speed versus this group.......and the cut back in distance appears to be a plus......might move forward 2nd out after the layoff and 2nd time running for Baffert

1  Princess Lela

race 2    average clarity

6  Warren's Tricia R.   best at SA and runs rather well in dirt sprints but seldom competes in them.....trainer is good route to sprint and that is the case here......last race wasn't as bad as it appears as she was given a very wide trip.......sharp recent 4F work

3  Back Beauty   seemingly needs the lead to win and she appears to be the most likely leader in this spot if of course this multiple drop down has any physical ability left in her

1  Audra   today's six furlongs at Santa Anita seems like best surface and best distance for this cheap claimer.......and with the change in trainers we get a major rider upgrade........dangerous sort

7  Goliath's Girl

race 3    average clarity

(if the race is taken off of the turf:  2-1-5)

5  Watch This Cat   new improved five-year old mare since giving the SA hill a whirl......as in 2 wins in 2 starts by an average of more than 3 lengths......and in her last win she dueled in fast pace and still managed to pull away down the stretch

2  Paquita Coqueta   11 for 22 lifetime on the grass and all three of her U S of A grass endeavors are decent including her only race down the SA hill grass course.......Prat and Mandella are win-less with their last 8 as a combo but that is likely to turn around and maybe starting today

4  Prize Exhibit   finds ways to lose.....finds ways to lose......finds ways to lose.....but maybe she should have been racing more on the hill where she is 1 for 1

race 4    average clarity

6  Party Gal   three-year old filly MSW 1st timer hasn't missed a beat in the a.m. for three straight months.....and the best looking drill is her last work hinting she is sharp when it counts the most as in right before her debut into the wonderful world of thoroughbred racing

4  Divine Spark   all three lifetime races fit and the abbreviated 5 1/2 furlong distance sure appears to be a plus for this Baffert filly who has flatten out in all three of her lifetime sprints and ran her very best in her last which was also at 5 1/2F

8  Queen Bee to You   seems like a good claim by Pender and company of a filly that seems capable of winning versus MSW runners.......sharp recent 4F drill hints Pender has a good handle on his new shooter

2  Artie's Lucky Girl

race 5    below average clarity

7  Kenzou's Empire   nowheresville in two lifetime MSW races......but.......he has been given some time off...... reworked ......and maybe most importantly returns as a 1st time gelding and drops into a mid priced maiden claimer.......and he gets a jockey upgrade to boot

3  Passed by Paul   seems to be running into shape for O'Neill and company and appears ready for his very best today and drops multiple claiming levels......back in 6 days is a tough turnaround but O'Neill is better than most off of short rest

8  Empire Ruler   nice maiden debut the kind of effort that makes him a major contender if he logically builds on the effort

9  Slasher

race 6    average clarity

(if the race is taken off of the turf: 3-10-14-1-2-5)

2  Cape Wolf   five-year old has run some very good efforts down the SA hill better than his (5 1 1 1) record indicates.......and I like the switch in riders to Van Dyke who often moves up off pace types competing down the hill

5  Zinvor   very consistent grass runner including in his races down the hill.......and his trainer is stout with laid up sprinters especially when they drop some.......up for 40K on 23 Oct.......returns on 7 January for 32K....right in Glatt's wheelhouse

8  Rangi   easily has earned the most money down the hill of anyone in this field,.......he has seen better days but I sure like that Miller has given his new shooter some time off and put in a series of 6F works.....that should help the staying power of this fellow who battles until very late and thus grabs quite a few 2nd's and 3rd's but not many wins

11  Zuri Chop

race 7    average clarity

5  Gormley   all three lifetime races fit and his latest is rather hidden........should be quite tough in this spot with a decent trip if he holds form.....regular rider Espinoza is up and Victor has little to prove when it comes to handling three-year old route Stakes horses

2  Term of Art   won a turf to dirt Grade 3 despite a very wide trip.....and since the race he has never worked any better......seems poised for his lifetime best today

1  American Anthem   very solid MSW debut sprint win.....has a pedigree that should take to two turn racing.....and is working up to snuff.......Smith gets the call and the jock is so much more dangerous in Stakes races than just another everyday race....and he has won 4 for his last 8 for Baffert

6  Big Hit

race 8    average clarity  (extra pick with a few potential scratches)

9  Calm the Sea   lone lifetime race was a nice win run way back in February.......that MSW breaking win fits well at today's next level and the fact she produced it at 7F pressing a solid set of fractions makes it even more noteworthy as it is never easy to win at 7F in your debut.......very impressive work series at LA.....rather sure she is ready for a repeat performances

2  Plane Lucky   2 for 2 at SA and in both races she went to the front and never looked back......so I sure like the quick best of 18 3F work she just put in.....and......both the aforementioned wins were with today's jock up

4  Skye Diamonds   nicely improved since Spawr claimed 3 races back.......2 for 3 at the distance and sure fits today's jock Tiago Pereira with 2 wins and a 2nd with 3 mounts

10  Little Dume

8  Zuzu's Petals

race 9    average clarity

(if the race is taken off of the turf: 2-9-11-7-10-1 )

3  Flamboyant   six-year-old gelding appears best at 9 or 10 furlongs and usually fires strong efforts at either of those distances........ maybe he has spent too much time racing at shorter or longer distances......9F today and for a trainer who has been firing on all cylinders to start the new meeting.....and draws the high in demand Prat

11  Ring Weekend   8 for 12 lifetime in the exacta on the sod.....and 2 for 3 at today's distance......stout rider trainer combo in Van Dyke and Motion......handles firm or a turf course with some give to it which might be the case today.....remains sharp in the a.m.

5  Itsinthepost   nicely improved since Jeff Mullins took over the training duties of this gelding.......seems deserving of a shot at the big time especially getting to compete at his favorite distance and with weight off ......dangerous sort

7  A Red Tie Day

10  Perfectly Majestic

12  Some in Tieme
