Santa Anita for Thursday 16 February 2017

OK card this afternoon. Forecast for Friday is very bad with heavy rain and nasty winds.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    above average clarity

1  Principal Bob   broke slightly tardy and ran way too wide in an eventful MSW debut......he earned a strong adjusted for trouble fig and did so on a deep slow fast track........1st on the grass for his 2nd lifetime start and his pedigree for the sod is better than for the dirt

3  Chiksika   strong wake-up in latest earning basically the same adjusted for trouble fig competing on the same day as our top selection but in a MC50K rather than a MSW affair......wisely gets his fanny back in a MSW.......not as strong of a grass pedigree as our top pick but it is adequate

7  Klondike   tough to get a gauge on this fellow as his two grass races were pace-less affairs which produce false final time figs........he did run a 2nd and a 3rd in those races so he obviously has some ability on the sod........well prepared in the a.m. and retains top grass jock Prat for the 4th straight time........dangerous for sure

6  Conquest Sabre Cat

race 2    above average clarity

5  Canned Heat  SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACE

4  Anita G.   steady diet of 5F works dating back to early November for this MC 1ster from the Molly Pearson barn........seems meant and ready for her debut and as stated above she faces a seemingly good soft spot in which to make her debut

1  Sapodilla   not much but did manage a distant 2nd in her last her 3rd lifetime start.......not impossible especially in a seemingly weak field .......but....... definitely easy to make as our 3rd selection

7  Paradise

race 3    average clarity

1  Pete's Play Call   nice recent history stalking the lead and he should be able to do that here.......last is very solid for today's level as he was caught pressing the lead while 3 wide.......seems likely to save ground today

2  Top Fortitude   last sure fits.....has some physical issues put sure fits fine if he feels good today........tough call......but.......quite dangerous if he is "right"

4  Hill Four Eleven   won for fun in both lifetime races gate to wire but he has been away from the game for over a year and returns with a rider who has struggled..... and now...... he is no longer an apprentice with his advantageous weight break......that hints the connections might not have the same horse following the layoff and might want to lose him before he shows "what he hasn't got".......but if he still is in good shape this is a decent spot to once again go gate to wire

race 4    below average clarity

4  Honor Maker   seems likely to sit either on the lead or in a stalk position which led to a 1st and a 2nd in his last two endeavors.......and it is quite reassuring that this Baltas runner has put in two solid preparatory drills for today's race

3  Star of Quality   just claimed by the ever dangerous Peter Miller and he has been able to work his new shooter 4 times since making his claim......only lifetime race for this filly run at a route on a fast rated dirt is her best to date

6  Road Test  well disguised bad trip 2nd by a head in her 2nd lifetime start and 1st at a route.....would have rated higher if she wasn't a vet scratch on January 15th

race 5    average clarity

4  Alsatian   not only did this colt win his last by 2 1/4 lengths but he did it breaking slowly and running very wide.......away since November but he ran awfully well with ample time off in his last.......rider upgrade.......should be flying late

9  Hot Smoke   first on the lawn but he owns a very good pedigree for it........tossed a clunker in his last..........blinkers on today hopefully to shake things up and wake him up........trainer is chilly.......maybe he can begin to get his mojo back here

1  Mr. Hinx   running lines in his two lifetime races hint he will be a better sprinter than router.......1st on the sod but his pedigree to handle it seems good enough.......like the change in riders to Baze especially for a grass race down the hill

2  Westmont

race 6    average clarity

3  Brainspin   ultra consistent (6 2 3 1) four-year old filly is working awfully well ......with all the bad weather Sadler sure did a great job of getting 4 works into her since her last which was run on 3o Dec.......believe she has a good chance to get loose on the lead but if not she still runs well without a loose lead

6  Skye Diamonds   filly is on fire (so is her trainer) as she has four wins and a 2nd competing in her last 5 races when not competing in a Stakes race.......and it sure appears that her jockey Tiago Pereira is a very good fit with 3 wins and a 2nd in 4 mounts on her

2  Lunar Express   actually had this girl on top off of her terrific recent drills but that was when Raffy had the call.....he's hurting and on the sidelines so now Pena is up.......Pena seems to be on the upswing but he is no Bejarano

7  Ponder Lea

race 7    average clarity

2  Northern Grey    SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACE

6  Tchula Sunset   Ed Moger is often at his most dangerous 3rd out following a layoff and that is the case here......this fellow's latest might do the trick and he might be up for even better today

4  We Go Now   definitely appears as if the cut back of one furlong is a plus.....another plus is retaining Baze as Baze is (4 1 0 3) on him and other riders have yet to hit the board with him...... and........that includes 2 with Prat as the rider

7  Amodei

race 8    average clarity

3  Doc Curlin   runs well fresh and he sure is working as if he is 100% ready to rock and roll in his return to the race wars following a 10 month hiatus.......Mulhall has been firing on all cylinders for the most part even better than her performance stat at the meeting (22 4 5 2) indicates

9  Geologist   on the right end of the learning curve and an impressive win 1st under the guidance of Valdimir Cerin in his latest......reassuring 5F work since.....solid grass race last summer at Woodbine......five year old gelding has tracked inside in all 4 of his lifetime races two of which where he had outside posts like today......usually you can't beat saving ground

8  Taima the Hawk   lifetime best was his only effort down the majestic Santa Anita hill grass course........would have rated higher if he wasn't away for 3 months......still his works are good enough......dangerous and rated too low if he is as fit as he was when he was last seen

1  River Hoss

5  Mercer Island

4  A New Trend
