Santa Anita for Sunday 19 February 2017

Tough card today. Better card for Monday. WE gave picks for the turf and the dirt in the two grass races carded in the 5th and the 9th.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    below average clarity

4  Broadway Nike   trainer is a ridiculous 8 for 19 for the meeting.......last three racing endeavors for this Spawr eight year old fit well.....can the old-timer run another strong effort.......hard not to believe that he will the way the trainer has been firing at the SA meeting

2  Accelerant   jock is ice-cold with only 2 3rd's in 14 mounts but he rides an old-timer (a ten year old) that still is highly competitive at the 8K level.......come on Iggy

1  Runassaurus   good works for this 8K claimer and that makes sense as he needs to be ready as competing in a race takes a big toll on him as this is only his 7th career race since debuting in Sept of 2014......lifetime best was his lone race at SA

race 2    below average clarity

2  Latest Curve   laid up since late August following 2 bad races after the O'Neill claim of a Baffert drop down........but this gelding is training as if he is the horse that O'Neill and company envisioned when the claimed him

5  Pat's Inheritance   not much in two lifetime races which were run almost a year ago.....but like our top selection he is working like he is returning a vastly better individual

1  Mintenized   believe this Jeffery Metz four-year old gelding somewhat prefers a fast racing surface and his last two efforts on off tracks aren't bad

6  Dixie Ballet

race 3    below average clarity

4  Ipray   last run at two claiming levels lower fits at today's higher level.... and....... the work put in 6 days ago for her new trainer (following the claim) hints she can repeat her latest.......low percentage trainer in Sierra but not so 1st following a claim

3  Melanistic   very surprised it took Baltas (or maybe the owners) so long to drop this 60 race 8 yr old mare down to a level where her diminishing abilities fit.......dangerous today at the 12.5L level

5  Miz Graycee   seems best at Santa Anita and also seems best running at today's 1 1/16 distance.......somewhat dangerous

race 4    below average clarity

4  Pressed by Paul   lifetime best was run 2 races back off of short rest like today.......same level......same distance.....and like he did in his good effort 2 races back he should be able to dictate the pace once again

6  Long Game   on the improve with each and every race and his last improvement is disguised to some degree by a wide trip......believe he might keep the improvement coming has he has put in a couple of reassuring works since his last ....and.....he is competing 2nd out following a two month break

3  Empire Ruler   debut 2 back on a "good" track fits well here.......last race on a sloppy track isn't that what he really wants is a fast track.......that and he just put in a vastly improved drill

2  Crafty Cowboy

race 5    average clarity (picks are for the turf)

10  Mischievous Champ   OK turf debut run on December 4th......impressive work series since.......Prat and his agent want the mount.......Drysdale could use a win and might get one here

4  Go Argento   needs ample time between starts and gets it.....cut back turf route to turf sprint is often a solid maneuver

5  True Testament  she seems likely to get the lead and this time with Maldonado up .......and the jock seems to have gotten his act together.......and when he is sharp he is one tough jock to catch

9  Another One

Long-shot consideration:   8  Of Note   dangerous looking work regiment for this Chew 1ster with endurance put in and then speed applied just 5 days ago with an impressive best of 30 bullet drill at SA.......adequate turf breeding

race 5    average clarity (picks are for the main track)

5  True Testament   like her last race she seems likely to get the lead and this time with Maldonado up who has gotten his act together.......and when he is sharp he is one tough jock to is speed doing so far?

6  Arrowsphere   needs a rebound.....time off might help him provide one

10  Mischievous Champ   OK turf debut......bred fine for the dirt.....Prat jumps aboard

4  Go Argento

Long-shot consideration:   8  Of Note   dangerous looking work regiment for this Chew 1ster with endurance put in and then speed applied just 5 days ago with an impressive best of 30 bullet drill at SA

race 6    below average clarity

3  Interrogator   ran well versus tougher in his latest and retains the jock who rode that day.......and that is significant as Desormeaux/Morey have been one tough team the last couple of mounts

2  The All Button  has solid sprint speed so he sure appears to be loose on the lead her and with first time Prat.......trainer and jockey have teamed up only once at the meet and it made for a 5 to 1 winner

5  Pampers n' Boots   keeps stepping up and handling challenge for today as in first time attempting a route........and considering his trainer Victor Garcia is a stellar 8 for his last 23 1st at a route you would surmise his chances of handling it are quite good

race 7    above average clarity

5  Sunday Rules   usually runs out of her mind off of layoffs and she has been off since August.......and she has shown significant early gas in the past with those fresh legs

1  Cuddle Alert   seems best racing at SA........solid Stakes win 4 races back at SA on Oct 30 run turf to dirt.......turf in last......dirt today......trainer Melissa Saldana has done well with limited starters in 2016/17

4  Kiss At Midnight   shows up almost every race as he has been part of the exacta 10 of 13 on a fast track and he is (3 1 2 0) at today's six panels.....should be motoring late

race 8    average clarity

4  Online Request   three-year old filly set unsustainable fractions in her lone route race run two back and predictably cashed it in........believe she leads here and hopefully her jockey Joe Talamo gets her to rate and not run her chances if he can

6  Chileanna   dull effort on the grass in latest.....debut was decent......takes that ever significant drop from MSW racing to low-level maiden his blood lines to be somewhat better on the dirt than the turf

9  Gio's Lady   lifetime best was his lone career race routing on a fast rated surface.......route and fast track today.......might just come down to if can he run as well on the SA dirt as he did at Lrc as that effort at Lrc is strong in this spot

5  Her Big Moment

race 9    above average clarity (picks are for the turf)

4  The Big Train   good history when Prat is aboard and seems to appreciate a grass with some give to it which today's turf should have........should be flying late

8  Start a Running    will start a running from the get go and attempt  to them wire to wire.........colt can handle solid pace and still stick around.....encouraging work tab....dangerous turf speed type

7  Burnaroundtheedges   decent run in latest considering it was off a one year hiatus.....ultra impressive a.m. since......might be sitting on lifetime best.....hope low % grass rider doesn't hurt his chances

3  My Italian Babbo

race 9    average clarity  (picks are for the main track)

3  My Italian Babbo   both races at SA which were run on the main track look good and were run at today's one mile distance.......and I sure like that he was able to get in 3 decent drills since his last race which was 4 weeks ago.......feeling good......likely to hold form

8  Start a Runnin    very dangerous on a loose lead.........and seems like the most likely leader......only mount of the day for Espinoza

7  Burnaroundtheedges   won his MSW debut which was on the dirt way back in 2014 and was bet three races were on the grass.....back to the dirt finally and working on it as if that is where he should have stayed

4  The Big Train

race 10    average clarity

9  Southern Keys   last fist well and it is somewhat disguised by about 5L of trip trouble.....blinkers on for today and some quicker shorter works put the step up in claiming.......hints the blinkers will help

3  Super Touch   forward move in latest and might be sitting on similar or better as Glatt and company see fit to step their four-year old up one MC level......and that seems more significant than it usually is as Glatt never seems afraid to lose a given horse

5  Desert General   dueled in a nasty set of route fractions in his latest and rightfully cashed it in.......drops into MC for the first time and likely will have improved stamina coming off a dueling route.........dangerous sort

8  Hook 'Em Kurt

1  Papa Royale

7  Smuggler Union
