Santa Anita for Monday 20 February 2017

Decent looking card today. Be back with you on Friday which is the next day of racing at Santa Anita.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity  (if off the turf:  2-5-1-8-7)

8  Table for Three   solid lone grass race run two back running 2nd despite a tough trip......1st down the hill but she has some speed and should be plenty fit in the late stages with that route turf race under her belt......and the D'A is hot

2  Radish   consistent sort seems to be very sharp at the moment (maybe because of the addition of the blinkers) displaying her sharpness both in the a.m. and the p.m........6 1/2 furlongs on the grass seems like a good fit

1  Jabber Now   1st timer for Stute appears ready at 1st asking and if she is that would break the mold as it has been a very long time since he has won with a 1st time starter

5  Lady Espionage

race 2    average clarity

3  El Huerfano   connections haven't been very fortunate with this gelding as he has run 4 straight solid numbered races and the best prize he received was 2nd.......overdue for some good luck

4  He Will   very sharp right now and draws the attention of Mike Smith who won for fun on this fellow the only time he ever rode him,.......1st dirt race in some time but he is 2 fo 4 on the dirt......should be motoring late

5  Follow Me Crev   connections will have their fingers crossed that the speed on paper shows up in reality and set a pace that they can't our 2nd choice he should be closing fast if that occurs

race 3    average clarity

2  Bernina Star   just popped her lifetime best in her latest on a very sloppy standing water track........both the pace she coped with and the final time are very solid......if she can repeat of it on a fast track she would be difficult to beat

3  Chaybaby   Baffert three-year old filly had solid a MSW debut and it was run at the difficult 7F distance for a baby.......jock upgrade to Prat..........gets to compete where she is so beautifully bred for as in a route of ground

4  Amen Sista   moved forward in her 2nd lifetime start both of which were run on the sod.......fits fine here if she manages another move forward today in her 1st ever on the dirt.....owns a pedigree that should handle one

race 4    average clarity

3  Rockantharos   seems likely to get a nice ground saving trip sitting either 1st or 2nd at the first call.......if Peter Miller is willing to use newcomer Ocampo the jock best take advantage of the opportunity.....I like the scenario

5  Sharp Holiday   step up in claiming doesn't seem warranted but Victor Fernandez is 2 for his last 3 stepping up multiple claiming levels.......and two sharp works since this girl's last support the notion of an improved effort today

2  Fashioned Gem   doesn't appear to be a very sharp claim by Ellis and company but her latest run off of a layoff in a protected race might have been nothing more than a spin around the track to tighten up like only a race can do sometimes .........and at full throttle dropping back into an easier conditioned claimer

race 5    average clarity

2  Texas Two Step   this six-year-old put in a strong effort at a softer level that was rather amazing as he ran a 115:2 moving into a decent pace while being caught 3, 4 wide.....very tough if he holds form and runs as well on a fast track as he did that day on an off one

5  Well Measured   Baltas six-year-old gelding appears very sharp right now and draws the services of the meets leading rider (and by a wide margin) in Prat......very consistent efforts when sprinting

4  Jimmy Bouncer   3 for 4 at today's distance.......ran a close 4th at the distance in his latest but ran his eye balls out having to cope with a brutal pace and do so running on a slightly dull inside......not out of this by any means

race 6    average clarity

6  Pacific Surf   major league rider upgrade especially for a turf race and a strong 5F work only 4 days ago......Hollendorfer and company aren't messing around.....they want to win with this colt today who has handle a grass course with some give to it

3  Lifeline   copious furlongs of work put into this 1st timer by Mandella strongly suggests this youngster is meant and ready for his MSW debut......handling 9 furlongs for a three-year old in their debut is no easy task but this guy has been very well prepared in the a.m. and sure is bred to run all day long

2  Californium   sprint-sprint-route scenario and improved recent a.m. work hint this colt has been pointed for today his 1st at a route.......the fact that Espinoza rides for the 1st time supports the notion

5  Brulee

race 7    average clarity

2  Jill Madden   broke her maiden at 1st asking only to get disqualified......stepped up into MSW racing for her 2nd start and found it a little too tough......back to where she started.......retains Prat......obvious top pick

6  As a Rule   Machowski 1st time starter sure finished up her work tab impressively especially for a three-year old state-bred maiden claimer.....rather sure this filly is ready to roll at 1st asking

5  Ministers Curl   seems to be running into shape and if the progress continues today she is not out of the win picture here

4  Smitten Kitten

race 8    average clarity

8  Venezuelan Gold   brutal trip in latest or could make it two for two lifetime.....way too wide and checked on the turn and did it all that close to the pace.......same effort/energy with only a so so trip and she should be a major factor in the outcome .....same effort/energy with a good trip and I doubt she gets beat

4  Buy Me a Drink   a perfect 3 for 3 when not racing in a Stakes race.........away since 11 Dec but runs well fresh.....not out of this by any means

2  Rally Back   fits OK in this spot if she is up for her best and her recent bullet 5F work hints that she might be.......also the cut back in sprint distance seems like a plus

7  Singleforareason

race 9    average clarity

7  Fight Thru   whole career on conventional dirt fits in this spot.......connections bother to ship back home from Florida with a cheap claimer......that tells me this gelding who has seen better days is still healthy enough to compete in this soft spot

2  Blue Law   just claimed by Vann Belvoir and he sees fit to add blinkers......vastly improved eye-popping 5F drill hints Belvoir owns the trump card for this guy.......we shall see

8  Always Never   toss out his route race in last as he had a short lead setting a brutal pace.......cut back in distance and drops.....trainer has won 5 of his last 9 dropping multiple levels

6  Unbridled Rocket

race 10    average clarity

(if off the turf:  2-5-1-3-7)

2  Rockin Rudy   won maiden debut last August by 11L for Brocklebank........shows up in the O'Neill barn for his 2nd lifetime start......and does so with one of the better work series for an O'Neill runner in quite some time......believe the trainer has a good handle on this one who is decently bred for the sod

5  Conquest Farenheit   ran two very strong grass races last summer at WO one of which was on a grass that was labeled yielding........that bodes well for today as the grass course should have some softness to it this afternoon

3  Elwood J   improved runner since the blinkers were added two races back......likely feeling really good as he has been able to put in 4 works since last racing on 20 January.........that says the Dorfer means business........and that is usually a very dangerous proposition for the opposition

1  Tipo Duro

race 11    average clarity

6  Competing  nowheresville in MSW debut at CD in Nov. for Dale Romans......shows up in the Bob Baffert barn for his 2nd start and with a very stout work tab.....especially his last preparatory drill which was a strong bullet 5/8ths gate work at SA.......can you spell R E A D Y

8  Pundy   2nd lifetime start is likely a little short of what it will take to win this high priced maiden claimer.....but his debut might do the trick.......needs a rebound to it........the cut back in distance might help him provide one

9  Anechoic   trainer has been cold but he is more than capable with a 1st time starter.........and his three-year old colt is working at Slr as if he is ready to roll at first asking.......we shall see

2  Sagittari

5  Secret Touch

12  Zap Again
