Santa Anita for Sunday 5 March 2017

My apologies for cutting back on some of the comments but it looks like rain is headed straight for Arcadia unless it breaks up before arriving. I felt as though I had to give selections for the races being taken off of the turf. Thus, I needed some extra handicapping time to do so. Be back with you on Thursday.

Best of Luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

4  Senator Robert   four-year old ran a solid 2nd in his latest and the effort is disguised by a bad trip......broke slow - rushed - blocked some in stretch.....two reassuring works since......step up of a level shows confidence in him by Bonde and company

1  My Secret Affair   wants the lead to win and he has quite a bit of early gas and with fresh legs I belive he will show it......and leading jock Prat wants the mount

5  Madelyn's Wild Max   might feel really good for Glatt to step this guy up 3 levels.....and Glatt scratched him out of a lower level claiming race the other day for this affair

race 2    average clarity

(if the races are taken off of the turf  7-1-8-5-6)

7  Chris and Dave  race lacks speed and this guy might have as much as anyone in the field.....and he has a rider in Pedroza who can really hustle a given horse early when the situation warrants it.......should be tough

8  Fritz Johnsen   2 for 2 on the lawn with Desormeaux but Kent is on our 3rd pick......Arroyo will do as he has had a very nice week teaming up with Miller......"Fritz" should get a good trip as his tactical speed will place him near the front in this affair void of speed

9  Brandothebartender   gelding likes ample time between starts and Heap shows patience and gives it to his four-year old.....always like these kind as you can usually count on them being fully fit and ready

2  Champagne Charley

race 3    average clarity

4  Pretty N Cool   solid races when competing "fresh"......away since September and worked brilliantly for Baffert and company.......seems likely to run a top effort once again

5  Constellation   very consistent ( 8 5 1 1 1) and proven "fresh"........and retains Prat who just won a Grade 1 with this filly on opening day

3  Sensitivity   another who handles layoffs.....(4 3 1 0) at 6F at SA.......4 for 4 when loose on the lead......that won't be an easy task here but not impossible

race 4    average clarity

6  Harrovian   Prat owes Callaghan a better ride as he was way too wide in his last in the 10 Fen version of this race......he earned an adjusted for trouble Santucci fig that is about 3L better than par

4  Competing   solid move forward in his 2nd lifetime start and 1st for Baffert as the trainer.......1st at a route but bred OK to handle one......should be on or near the lead which should help struggling jock Garcia work out a decent trip

5  Hard Arch   not crazy about only three works showing since his 1 Jan race especially considering this is his 1st at a route........but then again when Cerin uses Desormeaux his horse are usually very "live"

race 5    average clarity

6  Caray   solid wake-up in his last and two reassuring works since........jockey Israel Ocampo is riding quite well better than I anticipated as I am rather familiar with the rider and thought the S Cal riding colony would be too tough for him......Baltas youngster should be in the mix from the opening bell

5  Crafty Cowboy   dangerous looking work regiment for this Palma maiden claiming 1st timer.........works suggest he has early speed and so does his pedigree

3  Rainbow Squall   appears to have been run into shape and his recent drills hint he might be up for his lifetime best.....not out of this by any means

1  Magical More

race 6    average clarity

(if the races are taken off of the turf  6-3-2-4-1)

4  Domestic Vintage   three-year old versus older but I like the cut back in distance.......race two back is strong and run off of 4 weeks rest.........4 weeks rest today........3 lbs off........seems likely to make a good account of himself

5  Onzaway   by far at her best at the one mile turf distance.......4 yr old filly gets to face a field where four of her nine foes are 3 yr old runners......filly has had tough trips with outside posts but good trips with better posts.....5 post qualifies for "better post"

3  Storm the Hill   seldom do I have two 3 yr old runners in my top 3 selections in early 3 and up route races but I do here......1st time Miller with decent works showing for this GP invader.....hard to ignore

2  Yellow Bonnet

race 7    average clarity

2  Geologist   Cerin is having a good meeting at SA and he is awfully good when using the sprint - sprint - route manuever......and I like that his last race was a turf sprint and a good effort

6  Informality   quite the forward move in his last run on the 2nd of Feb.......he was able to work 3 times since and his last work-out hints he is feeling good......last might do the trick and he might be up for a forward move.....if so...... he could easily have been top selection

3  Sense of Glory   blinkers on for today and turf to dirt scenario.....two strong training categories for Ron Ellis

race 8    above average clarity

5  Boy Howdy   toss out latest run in August as this Spawr runner appeared to dislike a route and has been away since .......previous 3 races were sprints and all three of those sprints are better than appear in print......1 for 1 at 6F and the race was his MSW debut........big recent 5F work......trainer is hot.......youngster is proven fresh

4  A New Trend   graduated in his 3rd lifetime start.....so.....3rd out after a break might lead to another win especially with one sharp bullet drill put in just 6 days ago

2  Junior Gilliam  handles the AW or conventional dirt and sure seems to fit Mr. Prat quite well with a win and 2nd by a nose in two mounts on him

race 9    average clarity

(if the races are taken off of the turf  4-8-9-2-6-7)

2  Space Cadet   nothing special about either off his grass races but his recent vastly improved 5F work suggests Baltas has tweaked something for the better.......good post and rider......needs about 2 or 3 lengths of improvement and she might be up to it

3  Well Caught   one of the best trainer stats that I know of for Gallagher is 2nd out following a layoff......that is the case today for this four-year old.......and this young ladies latest isn't too shabby......good post......good rider......hard not to like

8  Golden Light   consistent sort needs to avoid getting caught 3 wide or worse on turn one as he has sometimes in the past when drawing outside posts at one mile on the grass.......like his chances if the jock gets that accomplished

7  Born to Be Winner

9  Room On the Broom

6  Hayley's Comment
