Santa Anita for Thursday 9 March 2017

Seems like a decent card this afternoon on a beautiful day at Santa Anita. Let's call it a 7 on the 1 to 10 scale of things.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    above average clarity

5  Tiz No Bluff   Ellis shows signs of awakening from the doldrums and might snatch his 2nd win of the meeting with this five-year old who ran a very solid race in his latest and did so off of 5 1/2 months rest......eight weeks rest this go around and working as if he is up for similar today

3  Moonlight Blue   can't be claimed off of the extended hiatus so you would think his connections will have him ready to roll racing at the same level as his latest (MC50K) which was solid and was his 1st at a route

1  Afendi   not much in his MSW debut back on Jan. 8th......so.......Baltas drops into mid-priced maiden claiming with little threat of being claimed even with a work series that hints he has improved.......and maybe has improved "big league" LOL

race 2    average clarity

4  Wanstead Gardens   last win came off of a 7 month layoff and the race was at 9F in a condition allowance race like this one........races off of a 3 1/2 month break this time and once again at 9F.......very impressive 7F drill 2 weeks ago nearly breaking the 1:24 flat barrier...........seems more than ready and the fact that choosy Mike Smith accepts the mount supports the notion

6  Prospect Park   seems to be rebounding in form and his recent a.m. work hints he might have more to give......and the race shape sure appears to be in his favor with his tactical speed in an affair void of speed.....seems likely to sit 1st or 2nd early saving ground

1  Big John B   might be too far back in this seemingly pace-less race but if he isn't lookout as he likely will be motoring late......not at all impossible put easy to make as our 3rd selection

5  Conquest Daddyo

race 3    average clarity

1  Tiz Sirius   Baffert colt has plenty of early speed and that is somewhat hidden.......might open up a clear lead and never look back with only five furlongs to hold things together

2  Solar Zone   breaks a little tardy about 50% of the time but if he doesn't today he seems likely to be in an envious stalking position........or....... if something goes amiss with our top pick he might grab the lead

5  Champions Diner   takes that ever dangerous drop from MSW racing to the bottom MC level..........would have rated higher if this sprint was a furlong further as he lacks speed and that likely will hurt his chances in a 5F affair with little speed signed up

race 4    average clarity

2  Oopper Wallah   1st ever running in a claiming race.......hoping to be claimed?.......or........hungry for a win?.......believe the latter applies as the recent works are solid and if he doesn't win and isn't claimed at least he gets eligible for the 40K starter allowance level.......and I doubt Gary Stevens wants any calls that are not "live" at the moment

5  A. P. Zone   Molly Pearson has done well with limited starters at the meeting with 3 wins in 10 starts.......for the most part the capable trainer has placed her horses where they can win and that is the case here......and like our top selection this colt will become eligible for the 40K starter allowance level if he doesn't win

3  Loud Stalker   on the right end of the learning curve and his recent a.m. work is quite a bit better indicating that he appears ready to fire his best to date.....not out of this if he does

race 5    average clarity

6  Poshsky   3 for 7 on the grass at one mile.......2 for 16 at other turf distances.......last is very strong albeit in a race run on the main track on the off going.......but I believe it is meaningful as his other career off track was nothing special........seems like a good claim.......jock upgrade

5  Rye Patch   both grass races since O'Neill claimed 3 races ago are very strong for today's lower level......placed as 2nd choice because he seems to need the front end and so does the horse to his inside........pace should be nasty unless one of the two elect to experiment and take back some

1  Moving

7  Conquest Superstar

race 6    above average clarity

4  Carlsbad Mountain   trainer shows signs of breaking out of a slump and he drops this gelding multiple levels as he has yet to win since he was claimed last August........last was a brutal journey for this elder statesman (3 wide duel with a solid pace - impossible to deal with).......should get a much better trip here with a better post and a smaller field

3  Over Achiever   5 for 12 on conventional dirt........1 for 12 on other surfaces......last is solid and very deserving of a step up of one level of claiming.......and leading rider Pratt smartly sticks around

5  Runasaurus   woke-up in his latest with 1st time blinkers.....claimed by O'Neill and he shows confidence in his new shooter putting him in at 2 levels higher in claiming.......but......he still is easy to make as our 3rd pick as our top two selections produced adjusted for trouble/pace Santucci figs that are about 5L better

race 7    average clarity

2  Reach the World   both lifetime endeavors fit fine at today's higher level.......and the way in which this colt is training for Baffert and company he seems likely to put in an effort that is more than "just fine' for today's nw alw level

7  Battle of Midway   sprint-sprint-route scenario for this Hollendorfer 3rd time starter who sure owns a pedigree that should appreciate a two turn race......both lifetime sprints are good.........and he draws the meetings leading rider for the 1st time

5  Mr. Hinx   trainer has been rather hot the last couple of weeks and he is hard not to consider as most of his stock have been running much better than anticipated.....turf in last and two decent drills since.....might be muscled up

6  Soglio

race 8    average clarity

9  My Aunt Tillie   major rider upgrade for today to Prat and that is a good thing as he has a post where he needs to use this fillies tactical speed to clear all or most in this race that lacks early speed.......should be in the mix from the get go and if this filly gets as easy a pace as I anticipate she should be tough from start to finish

2  Starlite Style   likely sitting on a top effort running 2nd out after a layoff and running off a solid turf sprint race down the hill.......good a.m. work since her latest.....Bejarano sticks around......poised for a very competitive race and might be the one to beat if she overcomes her tendency to hang

4  Hawk's Journey   sprint-sprint-route scenario which is the case here was also the case last April 15th and it led to this girl's lifetime best.......and the effort is somewhat hidden.......dangerous sort

8  Moonless Sky

7  Tahitian Lagoon

5  Silver Apples
