Santa Anita for Saturday 11 March 2017

One marvelous card put together this afternoon by the racing office at Santa Anita and on a beautiful warm day. Life is good!

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

5  Hook 'Em Kurt   Ellis is starting to heat things up........last effort for this five-year old is a fit here and he appears to have come out of the race in good shape as he returns off of short rest and he put in a strong 4F work since his last.......seems up for even more today

6  St. Reno   competitive in all 4 lifetime races.........very strong efforts 2 and 3 back dealing with nasty fractions and he still was able to battle and nearly win.......last wasn't as good as he finally got a reasonable pace to cope with and once again ran 2nd......needs a small rebound.......if he gets it he should be tough

4  Classic Ruler   three-year old versus older but he gets in at 110 with the bug boy up and his competition has to deal with 126 lbs........if the apprentice tries to go with our 2nd choice his mount will cash it in....... if he elects to stalk it might be a different story

race 2    average clarity

8  Hi Heat Boy   seems like a great spot for a MSW 1st time starter as those that have run have shown very this youngster's pedigree to handle the grass and he is training as if he is ready......very good grass trainer in D'Amato

4  Burnie's On Board   only one in four lifetime grass races is decent........can he find that effort off of 1/2 year hiatus from the game......trainer has won an uninspiring but not terrible 10 off his last 100 with 90+ day layoffs

9  Mizter Kool Cat   four-year old was bet hard in his MSW debut back on 11 December but had a wide trip following a slight tardy the race he showed a touch of speed and that is rather disguised......and he just worked a fast 3F gate work......and look who is up.......a speed rider in has tossed two grass winners........might sit in one of the top 3 spots early saving ground

10  Dr. Troutman

Long-shot consideration:  5  Marvelous Kaos   no endurance put into this colt in the a.m. prior to his MSW in June of last year.....and one weak jock was given the mount........went of 47 to 1 and ran to his odds........been away since and returns with an endurance building solid work regiment and a good rider.......bred fairly well for a grass sprint.......should be a handsome price

race 3    average clarity

8  Infobedad   big wake up two races back winning by 26 lengths on a mud floated track with 1st time blinkers.....then in his last he dueled in an unsustainable set of fractions in a 9F grass a.m. since........rebound city

6  Ain't Misbehavin'   by far at his best competing on the SA main track when the surface is rated fast (15 6 2 1).......and today's rider Kent Desormeaux has been an awfully good fit........and his recent works are quite a bit improved.....rather sure he has held form

3  Freddies Dream   might be a good claim by Carava and he is usually rather 'live" when he legs up Prat the leading rider to date at the SA meeting

2  Above Board

race 4    average clarity

5  True Testament   latest is better than it looks in print and the cut back in distance of one furlong appears to be just what the doctor ordered.......and one dynamite east coast jock in JJ Castellano is up

6  Paradise Woods   bet hard in her MSW debut and ran a solid 2nd.........continues to train as if she is a good one.......Prat and his agent apparently think so as they stick with the young filly

8  Faypien   expensive purchase is training well but might have caught a difficult spot in which to debut.......and her jock Garcia is struggling.....not impossible but easy to make 3rd choice

10  Sheza Chatykat

race 5    average clarity

5  Gormley   2 of his last 3 races are quite a bit better than par for today's Grade 2 level and his preparatory work for today's race suggest it will be 3 of his last 4 after this race

4  Mastery   a perfect 3 for 3 and his last which was his 1st at a route is extremely impressive both in final time and pace.......Baffert trained and Mike Smith aboard once again........very hard to split top two horses

2  Vending Machine   needs to move forward significantly to compete well versus our top two but he has never trained better for one of the hottest trainers around in Peter Miller

6 Iliad

race 6    average clarity

1  Madame Stripes   decent race down the SA hill off of a long layoff in her 1st in the good old U S of A and 1st on the turf......quite the jock upgrade for her 2nd USA race.....runs well off of ample time off and gets mile on the sod should be a good fit

2  Award It   copious furlongs put into this Mandella runner suggets the Hall of Trainer is bringing him back fully win and one 2nd with the blinkers on racing in the grass at today's one mile distance

4  Shehastheritestuff    seems likely to get a nice ground saving mid pack trip for Gary Stevens which has suited this four year old filly well in the past

6  Ceeme Run Wild

race 7    average clarity

11  American Pastime   very strong work tab for this Hess MSW 1st time starter especially considering the veteran traniner doesn't often push them very hard work wise......and his buddy Desormeaux is aboard

1  Twisted Road   work regiment for this Richard Mandella MSW 1st time starter has meant and ready written all over our top selection I'm rather sure this colt can run some and he is ready to display that today

8  Buckys Pick   feel like a broken record as here is a another 1st timer working as if he is ready to rock n roll in his debut into the wonderful world that is thoroughbred racing

12  Cascade Kid

race 8    above average clarity

5  Masochistic   3 for 3 at the distance and catches a field where he sure appears to be lone speed.....hard to see as anything but tough in this spot.....unless......coming down off of steroids (busted for them in his last) does him in

3  Kobe's Back   powerful late runner is constantly compromised by poor starts leaving the metal monster.......his late pace figs are off of the charts but he sure seems "slow pace" compromised here

4  Silent Bird   up and coming Glatt five-year old has won 5 straight and deserves a shot at the big time.......seems likely to snatch the stalk position behind our top selection and try to run him down in the stretch

1  Denman's Call

race 9    average clarity

3  Bolo   by far at his best at one mile on the sod.........should sit in a nice position stalking the lead and likely saving saving ground thru at least the 1st turn........Gaines could use a big win for a confidence boast and might get it today

4  Dortmund   not sure how much this fellow will take to the grass but if he runs as well on the sod has he does on the dirt the others in the field will be competing for 2nd......might be a big day for Sherman and Espinoza.......gee.......when have we seen that before

5  Ring Weekend   ice-cold trainer in S Cal lately but he is too good to stay that way........consistent sort needs pace to close into and likely will get that commodity today.....not out of this if he does

1  Bal a Bali

race 10    average clarity

3  Shaman Ghost   vastly improved since going on Lasix three races back with a 1st, 2nd and 3rd in three prestigious Grade 1 affairs.......those races were at 9 furlongs and it sure appears like another furlong of ground to cover will be to his advantage

1  Midnight Storm   needs the front end to run his best and sure appears to have it easily here......would have been top pick-a-rue if he didn't have something to prove on fast rated dirt where he has only 1 win in 5 races (and he is 2 for 2 on off tracks & 7 for 13 on the turf)

8  Hi Happy   beat 13 foes in a tough Grade 1 in Argentina in his lone lifetime race on dirt........1st time on Lasix today and some good works showing.....10 furlongs fits fine........might sit in the stalk position......not impossible and likely at a handsome price

2  Gangster

race 11   average clarity

5  Sircat Sally   filly crushed her competition in all three lifetime races and her last was at today's one mile turf distance where she showed she is capable of winning without the lead.....continues to train like a happy healthy individual all set to make if 4 for 4 lifetime

2  Go On Mary   just popped her best ever 1st time running on the grass in a race down the hill......two turns of sod is a question mark but you have to respect the fact JJ Castellano wants the mount.......and the rider change makes for one significant rider upgrade

1  Miss Square   better filly since Mullins saw fit to blinkers on this girl......three year old finally gets a good post in a one mile grass race as she has drawn the 8 - 11 - 9 posts to date........needs a very clean trip to win this and T C Baze might be able to provide one

11  Miss Sunset

10  Beau Recall

8  La Force
