Santa Anita for Saturday 22 April 2017

Only a couple of day's left to save some coin on the purchase of our special pub for Churchill Downs on Derby Day which is not only my favorite day of racing every year but the card that I enjoy handicapping more than any all year.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

2  Banze No Oesta   by far at his best on the SA hill and drops to the lowest racing level on hint he is in good enough health.....and Mr Miller just isn't afraid to lose a horse......more so than any trainer in S Cal these days

8  Success Rate   last two wins which include his hill victory in his latest came with outer-most post draws 8 of 8 today.......once again he might be the controlling speed like he was in his last out

4  Guggenheim   six-year-old gelding who handles the hill fits fine but......Espinoza has won only 2 of his last 37 on the grass and that is especially glaring as he doesn't exactly accept bad mounts....maybe he starts to get his "turf" mojo back here

1  Zuri Chop

race 2    average clarity

1  Wildfire Kid   consistent at SA.....and very consistent at today's distance (10 5 3 2)......seems to set up for his mid pack running style.......and quite the rider upgrade

4  Rangi   2 for 2 on fast rated dirt......and........his last would crush these......but it was so fast that it likely knocked him out some as he was a vet scratch on 18 March......4 works since the scratch indicates he has recovered to some degree......what degree is the ? mark

6  Jes Jaa   four-year old seems at his best when he takes best some and that is what Baze has done in most of his races when he has gotten the call.......should definitely get a fast pace up front to flatter his late run

race 3    below average clarity

6  Goliath's Girl   almost every mount bug boy Roman gets from Hollendorfer is the drop following the claim bothers me less than it normally would.....and the works are solid since the claim

5  Warrensdollarsigns   last might do the trick..... but.... more likely she will need to build upon her 7 week layoff race which her history hints that she usual she should be in the hunt from the opening bell

2  Miss Bliss   last at GG sure appears to be a public work-out to dirty up her form to drop and go today.....1 for 1 with far at her best on fast rated conventional dirt

4  Quinnette

race 4    above average clarity

5  Syntax   really took to marathon racing in his first attempt at it in his latest race....a very impressive strong fig 2nd in a Grade 2 going off at 27 to 1......and his pedigree hints the further the better.......hard to see losing if he is up for a repeat effort

4  Inordinate   earned an adjusted fig that is 5 1/2 lengths less than our top selection in the aforementioned Grade 2 marathon.....maybe he moves forward some and our top selection slips some

6  Papacoolpapacool   earned the same number in that Grade 2 that our 2nd selection earned.......but his pedigree seems less likely to appreciate another two furlongs.......does get a grass rider upgrade

race 5    average clarity

5  Passed by Paul   last two races fit a ton here and we get a rider upgrade (I think)......would tell you to go the bank if I wasn't slightly leery of this fellow not stepping up some following two consecutive races that could handle a higher MC level

6  Excavation   connections have been very stubborn about dropping this three-year old down to an easier level considering he only went for $22K at sale.....gelded since his last but my guess is it hasn't changed him much because D'Amato and company are willing to drop....should fit well at MC30K

9  Mind Reader   big wake up in last earning a number that is better than par.....and I like that Nakatani gets a long run-up (7 furlongs) to work out a trip and not get caught wide on the turn

3  Kenzou's Empire

race 6    average clarity

2  Ain't Misbehavin   sure has been an extremely consistent late running distance horse for Cerin and Desormeaux.......3 for 7 at the distance......rather sure Kent will stay inside as long as he is able........ as the last 5 race cards if you don't stay close to the wood as much as possible you create a tall task to overcome

6  Indygo Holiday   believe will stalk our 4th choice and try to pounce and take over on the 2nd turn.....ran 2nd in the March 25th version of this race despite a tough trip

7  Kristi's Copilot   vastly improved for Ian Kruljac since he claimed this gelding 4 races back and put the blinkers on.....last sure appears to be muscle him up sprint turf tune-up.......if that is so expect a possible lifetime best today....dangerous sort

4  Tribal Jewel

Long-shot consideration:   1  Action Hero   needed his latest off of the year hiatus from racing......and when was the last time you got Mr Prat with a ML of 15 to 1....all that and the gelding has seemed more than comfortable riding the rail

race 7    average clarity

4  Incredible Luck   seems like a great spot to graduate if he can handle an extra furlong of turf as he sure appears to be the controlling speed and then some in this spot......trainer is showing signs of awakening from the doldrums......four year old vs. three-year old foes and at 9F....that is usually a significant advantage

2  I'd Be Sad an Blue   likely needed last and if so he can move forward today......and do so with a rider upgrade especially for a turf race.......Nakatani seems likely to save ground sitting 3rd, 4th or 5th on the back-side......such a deal

1  Bottle Service   had multiple points of trouble or could have graduated in his last.....interesting breeding for a Cal bred as for as getting the 9F at three as  he is bred to run all day long on his dam side

7  Marckie's Water

race 8    above average clarity

1  Collected   impressive return to the race wars running wide near the pace and still managing to win off of a 10 1/2 month layoff......and the works since strongly suggest he will show more today.....4 for 4 on fast rated dirt

5  Texas Ryano   owns turf numbers that fit if he can manage the same in his 1st ever on the dirt....I have always thought that his pedigree would run on the dirt.....finally gives it a whirl in start number 21

3  Prospect Park  set pedestrian fractions in last which led to one easy seemingly stress free wire to wire's like the perfect work-out......should feel great for today's big race......loses Desormeaux.....but obviously Prat will do

race 9    average clarity

5  Riri   2 for 3 down the SA hill and her latest was impressive as she won despite a wide trip......and 3rd out following a layoff is one strong stat for D'Amato especially for a grass race

1  Watch This Cat  improving sort for Baltas and friends and their mare is a perfect 2 for 2 down the SA hill grass course....believe Nakatani will let the other speed go and take back his chances if he does

3  Coppa   double barrel action from D'Amato as he also trains our top choice......been away since Oct. but she is proven "fresh"......and is working as if she 100% fit and ready

6  Coniah

race 10    average clarity

3  Red Lightning   William Morey has an average capability with a MSW 1st timer but he sure has this colt training sharply for his debut......and when he goes to Desormeaux with any level horse that is working well he means business the last 3 or 4 months

9  Acker   Mandella 1st timer sure has put in enough furlongs of work to be more than fit and ready for his MSW debut.......and he draws his go to guy in Prat to ride

11  Bird Orr Brady   exits a fast heat in his debut where he displayed good early speed......tough post but he might be able to put that high early speed to good use to get on over and not get too wide on the turn......has shot here if Theriot can accomplish the task

7  Miner's Light

12  Towards the Light

13  Braddock
