Santa Anita for Sunday 23 April 2017

Only two day's left to save some coin on the purchase of our special pub for Churchill Downs on Derby Day which is not only my favorite day of racing every year but the card that I enjoy handicapping more than any all year.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    below average clarity

1  Up With the Birds   been away since Nov. and returns with D'Amato as his trainer for the 1st time.....seems well wound up with a series of tightly spaced 5/8ths works......returns at his most successful distance - 9F on the sod ( 6 3 1 0)

5  Frank Conversation   like our top pick he scored a Grade 2 win in 2016 so obviously his best is very stout for today's lower level.....hard to tell how meant and ready he is off of the 4 month break

2  Cardiac   not much at this level running as far as 9F but sure appears loose and dangerous if Pedroza slows things down early

race 2    average clarity

2  Monterey Shale   Gaines is dismal dropping maidens multiple levels but I believe she breaks the mold today.....recent works suggest the form for this Cal bred has held and she gets Raffy to ride making for a jock upgrade.....5 of 6 lifetime dirt sprints fit

4  Specimen   away since Sept of 2016 and returns off of some average a.m. work at best......but the only time he raced as low as MC 20K he ran his strongest career race and by a wide margin

5  Awesome Image   4 yr old has been competitive in his last four races when he sprinted six furlongs or less.....and his layoff last is better than it appears as he dueled on a dull inside albeit in one soft pace

8  Zachian

race 3    average clarity

2  Big Break   hidden forward move in her latest and now drops one claiming notch and changes riders making for a very significant rider upgrade......and Maldonado should sit on or close to the dangerous proposition for his foes

3  Princess Kendra   does his best running at SA (15 4 3 4) and with Pedroza in the saddle (4 wins in his last 8 mounts on this filly)......highly likely to be motoring late

5  Scathing   has been short of what it likely will take to win this affair but was just claimed by Cerin.....and an improved 4F work hints Cerin might have tweaked something for the better....if not she will be running for a minor reward

race 4    average clarity

3  Night's Watch   improved since switching to two turn racing 2 back.......and her recent near bullet 5/8ths drill hints Powell has him poised for a possible best ever......Prat wisely sticks around

5  Tiz No Bluff   appreciates ample time between starts and gets it.....still a maiden but fits find move by Ellis and company as he can't be claimed and doesn't blow this condition if he wins

1  Desert General   improved a lot in latest and graduated......needs to improve quite a bit again and the way he has trained since graduation day strongly suggests that he will

race 5    average clarity

7  Kencho   only runner in the 7 horse field with experience down the hill.....and both races down the hill are par like efforts for today's level.......retains stout grass jock Kent Desormeaux for his only mount of the day.......should be tough

3  Venezuelan Gold   competitive sort in all of her career races which were run in sprints on the dirt.....pedigree to handle the sod seems adequate......and one of S Cal's better rider/trainer combinations in Arroyo and Miller

6  Friendly Request   better suited to sprints as far as his dirt ability is if he takes to the sod in her 1st on it at least she appears to be at a distance that she can handle........pedigree to take to the green carpet seems decent......and of course a good turf trainer in D'Amato

1  Aura Rose

race 6    average clarity

8  Moments Notiz   nice improvement 1st out for Peter Miller following the claim.....wheels back in 8 days rest and drops back to level Miller claimed him for.......trainer just keeps making all the right moves so I have very little concern that short rest will hamper this fellows chances

6  Courageous Dave   last time the blinkers were taken off it led to a significant form reversal ( Feb of 2016)......looks like Miyadi is utilizing the same maneuver here to wake up this cheap gelding

4  Second Proposal   two very solid races run in a row.......can a bottom dweller claimer be up for a 3rd.......might be rated too low if he is......T C sticks around to find out

7  Swiss Cheese

race 7    below average clarity

6  Ground Attack     rider/trainer have teamed up for 3 wins in their last 5 as a team.......1st timer has put in copious furlongs of work in preparation for today.......Bruce Headley seems to have changed up his training as he hasn't been drilling the "H" out of his stock.....seems to be waiting until they race to let them fly......very unusual change for a trainer of his statue and success

7  Righteous Wave   double barrel action for Headley as he trains our top choice (see comment)......both gelded three-year old runners have been working together with his barn mate appearing to have a slight edge over him in the a.m.

4  Air Force Cadet   showed life in his MSW debut beating 1/2 of his foes despite a bad trip.....broke slowly and ran quite less than 5 works since.......jockey Garcia is starting to snap out of the doldrums......dangerous 2nd time starter

1  Nap Lajole

race 8    average clarity

1  Stormy Liberal   loves the majestic Santa Anita hill grass course and he is training as if he might pop his lifetime best for Miller and company.....that is a scary proposition for his competition

5  Ambitious Brew   another who has made a good living on the SA hill.....and Hall of Famer Mike Smith has been a good fit on the Marty Jones runner having won 3 of his last 4 mounts on him......hard not to see this gelding not being a major player here

3  Coastline    likely needed his last off of the extended hiatus from the game......six year has two races down the hill a win and a 2nd with his 2nd being very impressive just missing in a Grade 3 despite very wide trip.....not out of this by any means if he brings his "A game"

race 9    above average clarity

6  Faypien   weak drills by Baffert standards prior to her MSW debut.......went off at 11 to 1 supporting the notion and ran big breaking slowly and running wide beaten by 6 1/2 lengths by a "monster"......very nice work tab this go around.....decent trip with the same effort/energy and she should be tough...and she might move forward

1  Utana   another with a very strong MSW debut......and her trainer is usually much better with 2nd time our top choice she seems more than capable of breaking her MSW today even with a tough post to deal with at 7F

8  Soul Singer   lone race was way back in summer where she ran a solid time for a filly two-year old and flashed a very high level of early speed......returns for Miller for her 2nd start with 1st time hint she is fit and ready......should be on or near the lead from the get go

9  Danuska's My Girl

4  Anchor Baby

5  Miss Remembering
