Santa Anita for Friday 9 June 2017

Belmont Stakes day is tomorrow and our special pub with full race card selections (13 races) and comments (six Grade 1's, two Grade 2's & one Grade 3) is now available for purchase. Selections will sent in your email late this afternoon. The race card is outstanding with ironically the only race that I rated below average clarity being the Belmont Stakes.

Because many of you need to leave the house early on Saturday the Santa Anita selections should be posted no later than 7 a.m. pacific time. Santa Anita has 30 races carded Friday thru Sunday. Seems like a good plan for the future for such a long meeting (26 Dec to 4th of July) to go with 3 days a week racing but with a few more races.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

6  Vending Machine   Peter Miller is not afraid to lose a given horse so the drop into high-priced claiming doesn't bother me in the least......most accomplished runner in the field and the meeting's leading trainer....should be tough

5  Mr. Hinx   a perfect 3 for 3 when sprinting and one of those sprints was on the Santa hill turf course.....most apprentice riders struggle on the grass but not his weight break sure appears to be well worth it

7  Who Cares   seems to show up every race and gets a rider upgrade for this afternoon.......really finishes her sprint races with vigor and that is one dangerous proposition for her opposition with Raffy aboard

2  What'sontheagenda

race  2   average clarity

4  Secret Shopper   last isn't as bad as it appears in print and his MSW debut looks good and was good........filly cost $65K at sale so the drop into MC50K makes some sense.....seems likely to be in the mix from the get go

2  Norwegian Spy   one of Mark Glatt's better trainer stats is dropping from MSW to maiden with that in mind I highly doubt this is a tune-up as he would have this youngster in a protected MSW race rather than a Mdn40K......lone lifetime dirt race is about 4L better than appears in print

3  Tiki Bar Logic   another dropping out of MSW racing in this case for trainer Mike Machowsky who has been firing on all cylinders the last couple of months........away since Nov but works suggest he is ready fresh off the bench

5  Miss Trusty

race 3    average clarity

5  Surrender Now   very fast bullet 4F gate drill at Slr for a two-year old filly maiden suggests this Miller baby has talent and could cut into that $220K sale price with a large chunk of the purse........rather sure this filly is meant and ready

6  Tyfosha   Virginia-bred just sold in March for a cool $410K so O'Neill and company got a good look at what they were getting......and the two 4F gate works hint that like our top selections they are looking for a return on their investment right away as in this youngster's MSW debut

7  Mondaymorningblues   would have battled for the win as the favorite in her MSW debut if this Miller youngster hadn't gotten blocked in the stretch......likely feels good for Miller to bring her back in 22 days and with a reassuring 4F work to boot

1  Nothins Free

race 4    average clarity

5  Warren's Fandango   tepid top choice in a tough race to break of the trainer's better moves is blinkers on and that is the case here.....back to T C Baze and back to one mile on the sod.....also both positives

2  Captain Call   hasn't been seen since mid December when he almost upset the apple cart at 27 to 1 in his debut at the MC20K level.....1st turf and steps up a couple of levels for his 2nd lifetime hint he is ready and then some....but....his pedigree for the turf is nothing to write home about

6  Hi Heat Boy   dangerous drop down especially considering D'Amato is the trainer....would have rated higher if he had an accomplished turf jock up.....instead Solis is up and he like so many apprentice riders struggles on the turf

3  Fall Harvest

race 5    average clarity

1  Infobedad   last two races up for a tag (2 back and 4 back) are very strong and the one run two back is disguised by a wide 1st turn following a slightly tardy that effort he showed he can win from off of the pace and that appears to be a very good thing in this affair loaded with speed types

5  Prime Issue   vastly improved since Peter Miller re-claimed this 7-year-old gelding 3 races back for 20K.......good history with today's rider Bejarano up (3 1 2 0) and in those three races he carried 124 to 126 lbs......gets in at 122 lbs today entered for 45K .....such a deal

3  Madiba   not out off this by any means as this fellow is the only true closer in this field of six.......bug boy Evin Roman can sit back and relax in last and then pour it on come stretch time with his 7 lbs weight break advantage

race 6    average clarity might change order

7  May B   seems like the speed of the speed and that is saying something in this race with plenty of it signed up.......capable of some extremely strong efforts when he brings his "A game" and his 3 good-looking works since his latest hint he might

8  Juansagain     failed in his race 2 back which was run off of a long layoff.......then Baltas gave him 7 weeks off to get his act together and meanwhile he put into him some solid a.m. work.....and did he ever response running a it might be a very good claim by Miller who despite the move up in claiming only needs to hold this fellow's form to be formidable here

10  Oh Newman   Puype has been a little chilly lately but might be trying to rectify that here with this gelding dropping multiple levels......Mike is an impressive 4 for his last 8 with such a move and in general has been dropping to win at a high rate the last 6 months or so

9  Arlington House

race 7    average clarity

5  Doc Curlin   very dangerous trainer in Richard Baltas when he takes over the training duties of a grass horse which is the case here......both races down the hill for this five-year old gelding are noteworthy.....the race two back is solid fig wise and was a win.....his last was about 2 1/2L less fig wise but he finished up with a very strong stretch run.....away for two months but runs well fresh

3  David's Memory   two for two with today's rider Bejarano aboard and both races were down the SA hill grass for six with other riders in both of Bejarano's wins this fellow should be in the hunt from the get go

1  Aotearoa   2nd out following the D'Amato claim and back in shorter rest.....and with a rider upgrade especially for a grass race.......a trifecta of reasons to consider backing this six-year-old

10  Taima the Hawk

Long-shot consideration:   9  Masterful Stride   has twice stopped the clock at 108:1 at Tup albeit over a year ago......but he is training awfully well preparing for his 1st ever on the sod......his pedigree for the grass is adequate and he is two for two on off tracks hinting he can adapt......should be a big price and with Pedroza up who is having one of his better years on the grass (riding not smoking)

race 8    average clarity

4  I'll Wrap It Up   by far at his best running on conventional dirt and at the distance of 1 1/16........soft pace easy win in last in fast final time......might have a little something left in the tank......and he might need it as he is forced to carry 128 lbs

7  Ain't Misbehavin   consistent off pace runner has run races that fit fine here in 4 of his last 5 races....and you have to appreciate that he won with 128 lbs on his lbs should be a piece of cake

5  City Steel   last nine racing endeavors fit here and he seems at his best at today's 8 1/2 furlong distance....and he better be as he is assigned the high weight in the field of 129 lbs......jock (Joe Talamo) is coming off of a hot week of riding which was good to see as he was ice-cold the previous week

6  Shackleford Banks

race 9    average clarity

6  Mor Candy   nice forward move in 2nd lifetime start and 1st on the turf and the hill.....nice reassuring 3 work series since.....and considering he is trained by one of S Cal better grass conditioners in D'Amato he likely is up for another move in the desired direction

1  Plate Side   O'Neill has a dismal record with runners making their maiden debut in a grass race (0 for his last 20 with only 3 hitting the board) but this gelding is working too well to ignore....and owns a very solid pedigree to handle the turf especially for a Cal-bred

7  Lymebyrd   lifetime best was run in his MSW debut fresh off of the extended hiatus from racing might be a are up to snuff.......and his pedigree for the turf in his 1st race on it is decent

12 AE    Stormin Norman

11 AE  Desert Lee

3  Insubordination

4  Gosofar
