Santa Anita for Friday 16 June 2017

Not an easy card to decipher but at least I had some extra time to study. Sure hope that it pays off.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    below average clarity

6  Uber Star   last 4 racing endeavors all fit well in this spot......and his latest which was the 25 May version of this race was his 1st running in a maiden claimer......he received a brutal trip and ran off the owner - new trainer - new rider - with hopefully a better outcome

2  Odyssey Explorer   nowheresville in his latest but he gets plenty of time to recover and he is working as if a rebound can occur......previous two races fit pace runner might really fly in the stretch with the hot 7 lbs bug boy aboard for the 1st time

9  Fregosi   blinkers off in his last race and it led to arguably his best effort of his 4 race career......nice reassuring 4F work since......Baze sticks around.......same as his last or better seems likely

1  Street Rules

Long-shot consideration:   8  L. A. Tower   nice improvement in his 2nd lifetime start which was on the slop.......good pedigree for the grass and I like horses bred for the grass that have handled a sloppy track......and his breeding screams the further the better.......decent rider/trainer combo

race  2   average clarity

10  Spiced Perfection   bet hard in her MSW debut and would have won for fun if not for a very poor trip for this two-year old filly......and her trainer Brian Korinar is quite a bit more successful with 2nd time starters (8 for his last 25)

3  Empress of Love   Cal-bred had a tough trip in her two-year old MSW debut breaking slow and running wide....finished up well to salvage 2nd......T C Baze wisely sticks around and likely will be out to make amends with a better ride

9  Sapphire Kid   Miller 1ster is training as if she is ready to roll and draws Miller's top jock these days in Arroyo.....and mom has tossed 3 winners from 3 starters including a Stakes winner

6  Smiling Tigress

Long-shot consideration:  1  Got an Obsession   interesting 1st time starter from the Pearson barn who has been able to hit the track weekly to work dating back to March.....both speed and endurance have been but into this filly who has a pedigree that has endurance on one side and speed on the other......might be in the hunt from the get go.....and.....not quit

race 3    average clarity

4  Sheza Firstsamurai   on the right end of the learning curve.....and like she did in her latest to break her maiden she should be in the mix from the get go.......rider/trainer have only missed hitting the board in 2 of their last 10 as a team......and.....last but not least the filly that finished 2nd to her in her latest absolutely crushed her completion on Sunday earning a very strong fig for the maiden 20K level

8  Sharp Holiday   latest race is better than appears in print as she pressed the pace running on a somewhat dull rail....did well to grab 3rd......and the cut back of 1/2F should be to her liking

1  Back Street Cat   5-year-old mare has competed well at SA at 5 1/2F in the past.......and she has put in two straight abbreviated sprint races on the bullring at LA that suggest she is in rebound mode.......dangerous inside draw with a 10 lbs bug boy up who was aboard for her 17 to 1 2nd in her last

2  Anita G.

race 4    average clarity

5  Cono   decent two-year old MSW debut on May 6th and he has been able to put in 4 works since.......and.........his recent bullet 4F gate drill worked just 6 days ago suggest that we will see more than "decent" this afternoon

6  Powerful Thirst   1st timer draws the attention of Prat (and his agent) who over the last two months is 2 for 5 with two other in the money for Steven has tossed two winners from 2 starts and both were Stakes winners

4  Rocky Rogue    small potatoes trainer but he does extremely well with MSW runners.......two year old gelding ran 2nd in a small Stakes at Tup at 33 to 1 first time on Lasix in his 2nd lifetime start.......that race fits here if he handles the SA dirt as well as he did the Tup dirt

7  King Eddie

race 5    average clarity

5  All of a Sudden   away since late Feb. but all three lifetime races fit fine and she appears to be ready fresh off of the bench for Miyadi and company with some very tightly spaced interval training.......the kind of work tab that doesn't raise any eyebrows.....7F appears as if it should fit her well

8  Tee Em Eye   work regiment is very impressive for this laid up Karen Headley filly coming off of a 364 day layoff......and K Headley is often at her most dangerous coming off of long layoffs

7  Wild Strawberry Dee   trainer Mike Chambers is dangerous in both pertinent trainer categories here....2nd out after a layoff and turf to dirt....retains Gary Stevens......not sure if this mare is as good on the dirt as she is on the turf....but.....she should be a major player if she is

3  Papercoversrock

race 6    average clarity

5  Autumn Twilight   brutal trip in her last with about 10 or 11 lengths of trip trouble......showed she can still run Pender steps her way up in claiming price......and makes a monumental rider upgrade

4  Shakti   2 for 2 when running in a claiming race.......and considering Miller never seems too concerned about losing a given horse by way of the claiming box I'd say that 3 for 3 in claiming after today has a good shot at occurring

3  My Pamilla   filly seems to need a grass race to run off of to perform these days.....turf race in last and I like that it was an 8F one as it should help her get today's 7 furlongs of dirt

8  Paschalitsa

race 7    below average clarity

6  Path of David   just claimed by Periban and he finds a decent softer spot for his new shooter while only having to drop her 5K in claiming from the price he claimed her at......4 year old gets a rider upgrade especially for a grass race.....trainer sure could use a visit to the winners circle and might get one here

9  Guggenheim   trainer Robertino Diodoro is extremely solid in all the relevant training categories and retains the meets leading rider Flavien Prat.....1st racing as far as 9F but he owns a pedigree that should handle it

2  Que Chistoso   nicely improved since switching to grass racing......away for two months but it appears that the break has done him some good as his a.m. work is solid.....distance is somewhat of a concern or would have rated higher

8  Belisarius

race 8    below average clarity

8  Proud Elegance   filly has not been seen since her MSW debut which was run almost one year ago in a fairly tough MSW that race she broke tardy and ran wide earning a fig that fits easy task to get a youngster to run a route of ground off of a long layoff but she has put in copious furlongs of work for today's challenge.....low % trainer but he is decent off of long layoffs

7  Li'l Grazen   good time to drop following an eased effort....race two back is very strong for today's lower level and disguised somewhat in it's strength....1st at a route but owns a pedigree that should handle trainer/rider combo

10  Quiet No More   on the improve but does draw a difficult post to overcome......but Bejarano has been up for her last two races which were both routes so his knowledge about this Harty filly should enhance his chances of working out a decent trip

5  Majestic Diva

Long-shot consideration:   6  Marthamydear   nice awakening 1st at a route and it makes some sense as her pedigree screams "long".....decent works since.....rider upgrade and a subtle one.....seems likely to stalk the 3 horse.....very dangerous if she builds on her last and I think that she will

race 9    average clarity

4  Mr. Roary   trainer is often at his most dangerous off of  layoffs and this gelding has been away since that Nov. race he fired the best of his 14 race career.....he only lost by 4L despite being caught wide up on a solid pace......likely could have won a Grade 2 if he was inside instead of 3 - 4 wide......looks loose here......last 3 times he wasn't entered in a Stakes race he has a record of (3 2 1 0)

6  Vigilante   very consistent sort and retains Bejarano....ran 2nd in the 28 April version of this of S Cal's top grass trainer's in the D'A......hard not to like

8 Royal Albert Hall   awfully tough in alw races when racing at 9 furlongs or further and he is one for two at today's 10 furlongs.......Nakatani rode him beautifully in his latest and stays up for today......not an easy post but Corey might still work out a good trip

2  Newsman

race 10    average clarity

11  Princess Aubrey   SCRATCHED OUT OF THE RACE

1  Sally Simpson   like the combination of dropping from a turf route to a 5 1/2F dirt sprint for this filly who has shown good improved speed in her last two races......not only that but she just worked an eye-opening 5/8ths bullet at Santa Anita......might be the sharpest of her career......and drops......such a deal

8  Furious Fire   par like effort in her 2nd lifetime start run way back in hint she is up for similar this afternoon despite the long absence from the game as her works strongly indicate she is ready fresh off of the bench

4  Todos Santos
