Santa Anita for Saturday 17 June 2017

Not an easy card to decipher. That might lead to one very large carryover for Father's Day!

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

1  Face of Victory   improving sort and he sure has handled the somewhat specialty distance of 7F awfully well in his last two starts....and his last start is especially noteworthy in that 1st, 2nd and 4th all won their next out

2  Squared Squared   seems better suited to sprint racing and I like the one mile turf run in his latest as it should have muscled him up and given him some endurance when push comes to shove in this 7F affair

4  Gentrified   lone lifetime win came the only time this youngster competed at today's 7F distance......and...... the cut back in distance of one furlong and back in short rest should work to his advantage.....and.....lead to another strong 7F race

5  Who's Hot

Long-shot consideration:   3  Causa   good history sprinting at SA on the dirt when not wearing blinkers (4 2 2 0).......just claimed by Periban and he got this colt to put in his most impressive work to date.......new trainer seems to have a handle on the new member to his barn

race  2   below average clarity

6  Lady Acclamation   stalked a brutal pace thru 6 furlongs in her MSW debut which was on turf at one mile .....and .......did so in a race with plenty of talent....the effort sets her up well for today's cut back in distance....Baze wisely sticks around

8  Tiz Mi Hiana   yes Marty Jones has a horrendous history with 1st time starters.....but.....this filly is bred very nicely for a race down the SA hill grass course.....and.....whereas most of the trainer's 1st time starters show dull works this filly is showing solid drills over at LA

11  Jabber Now   improving sort with 3 races down the hill under her belt....but....she likely needs to keep the trend going this afternoon to get to the circle of joy......Nakatani sticking around can help that happen

5  Aflewency

race 3    average clarity

2  Microrithms   very inexpensive ($50K at at sale) Baffert 1ster......but.......he sure isn't training like one,,,,,,,last three drills are very solid with his latest worked only 4 days ago.....feeling great when it counts the most as in right before his debut......all systems go

3  Sakab   another 1st time starter finishing his a.m. preparation for his big day with a flourish......new unproven brood-mare but his sire Uncle Mo has been exceptional to date.......Frey gets the call and he won two more yesterday to bring his win percentage to a solid 15%

5  Six Cider   lone lifetime race which was run in late summer isn't bad but he will need more today unless of course both 1st time starters aren't as good as I believe they are......positive sign of readiness that Prat and his agent want the mount

race 4    below average clarity

8  Stately Command   brutal trip in last......toss it out as she had no shot........claimed by a low percentage trainer overall but he is decent 1st out following a claim......good spot for speed and he should be on or near the lead......solid history racing on conventional dirt (15 6 1 3)

2  Where's the D   bad claim to say the least as this filly keeps dropping and failing.......takes a very big plunge today to the new low-level at SA of 6,250 claiming.......hate these kind and then some......flip a coin

4  Gianis   trainer is doing much better these days in S Cal.......late running filly appreciates running off of short rest and 2 weeks since her latest sure qualifies for that.....should be motoring late

1  Thames Valley

race 5   below average clarity

4  Rocket Fuel   seems to be working for his new trainer Phil D'Amato as if he has his new shooter ready fresh off of the bench for a strong effort.......seems at his best at Santa Anita and at six furlongs.......and this might be his only opportunity to take advantage of the distance/track for quite some time

3  Forest Blue   ultra consistent sort on conventional dirt  and on the rebound .......and he seems to be at his best at 6F (5 4 1 0).....hot rider/trainer combo.....hard not to like

1  Junior Gilliam   late runner in a field with plenty of early speed.....connections will have their fingers crossed that the anticipated nasty set of fractions come to fruition

8  Big League

race 6    above average clarity

4  Sircat Sally   Hollendorfer has turned into one of the best trainers of young fillies in the nation.....and.....he sure can get his young girls to win race after race.....going for a perfect 7 for 7 with this filly who once again should be in the driver's seat sitting on or just off the lead in what should be a reasonable pace......back to money Mike Smith who sure lived up to his name in N.Y. on Belmont day

2  Pacific Wind   last was obviously decent (and was run on a course that had some give to it and should have been labeled at least "gd") but I really like her kick better on very firm turn which she gets today......and the extra furlong to cover should be a plus as she owns a pedigree that screams the further the better

5  Beau Recall   on the improve with each and every race since arriving in the good old U S of A.......has a very nice late run and seems likely to appreciate another furlong of turf to get up in time

race 7    below average clarity

13  Kenzou's Empire   Baltas is very stout with the sprint=route-sprint maneuver and that is the case here.......three year old has been a morning-glory of sorts but seems to be slowly figuring out what the afternoon is all about......seems likely to get a nice outside stalk position in a race without too many speed types

8  Specimen   only race at seven panels is one of his better lifetime  efforts....and he often seems at his best off of short rest.........7F today and racing off of only 15 days rest......should be a player

4  My Farmer   ran a solid race on the turf that sure fits here....and ran a solid race on the slop that sure fits here......not so hot on fast dirt so far........recent works hint that he can handle it.....and he sure gets a rider upgrade and a somewhat subtle one

2  Liberation

race 8    average clarity

4  Lucky J Lane   six-year-old seems to be on the rebound and sure has worked well for Knapp following his latest race which was quite the forward move......and the gelding seems at his very best racing on the grass at today's 8F distance.....4 for 9 and 0 for 10 at other turf distances ......seems likely to get a nice ground saving stalk or mid pack position at least thru turn 1....like his chances if that is what occurs

9  Wood Machine   another who likes the one mile turf distance......retains Stevens who is riding the grass extremely well both record wise and visually speaking.....Mike Chambers five-year old should be motoring late......hard not to like

5  Hay Dude   seems to need the lead to be successful when routing on the turf.....my guess is he has about a 50/50 chance of getting it......and if he does Mr Prat will make it difficult for others to pass on by when push comes to shove in the stretch

6  County Lineman

Long-shot consideration:   8  Private Prospect   nice wake up race at Cby in his latest and two recent works at SA that suggest he is ready for his first ever on the sod,,,,,,and it's about time as his pedigree for it is quite good........and Mr Diodoro is 27 % win with a massive sampling of 800 shippers.....dangerous and should be at least his ML of 10 to 1

race 9    average clarity

3  It Tiz Well   has won one of 3 attempts versus Graded company and ran a bang up time at OP.....in his other two Graded races he ran 2nd and 3rd but caught two fields with a few unbeatable "monsters" ......don't see any of those today .....and as mentioned in race six Jerry Hollendorfer has turned into one of the best trainers of young fillies in the nation

6  Faypien   on the improve with each and every start.....and the connections didn't shell out the big bucks to own a good sprinter.......works are dynamite and sure suggest this Baffert youngster is more than ready to handle her 1st at a route

2  Spooky Woods   capable of taking back and that appears to be a very good plan here in this affair that has an abundance of speed....best ever and somewhat hidden is her only time she raced at today's 1 1/16 dirt distance at SA

8  Noted and Quoted

race 10    average clarity

6  Oregon   seems best at the one mile turf distance earning her lifetime best two races back at the distance...... and...... ran better than par.....and she goes from one struggling grass rider in Espinoza who rode that race 2 back to a red-hot grass one in jockey Stevens

11  Member State   works suggest that this laid up Ire invader is ready at 1st asking for his new trainer.......and note that the horse that beat this gelding 2 races back is our solid 3rd choice in the 6th race a Grade 2.....and that horse was also brought to the USA by trained by Callaghan and Slam Dunk Racing

5  House of Troy   away since 2014 but 1st time gelding and 1st time running with blinkers......a.m. work hints he is ready despite the long hiatus from racing....and he owns an excellent pedigree for the sod

3  Awesome Heights

9  Ding Dong Ditch

7  Divisor
