Santa Anita for Friday 23 June 2017

Decent card hopefully to start off the weekend right. Let's call it a 7 on the 1 to 10 scale of things.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

1  Room On the Broom   a touch leery that this filly is up for a tag but if she is still in relatively good health she will be a handful here......last was very impressive running way too wide following a slightly tardy start and in only a 4 horse field........Talamo will be out to make amends

2  Tiz Adore   needs plenty of time between starts so it is logical to think that Shirreffs will have this mare ready.....she does have something to prove on the dirt but her pedigree for it is fine

4  She'slucklythatway   has done little wrong in 4 lifetime races why rated as 3rd selection you say......just claimed by Freeman who is only 1 of his last 10 1st following a claim and 0 for 14 1st at a route.....and he shows only one work since her last race which was on May 7th

3  She's Not a Lemon

race 2    above average clarity

5  Mystery Train   seven-year old returns off of a 10 month layoff as a first time gelding.......1st out following the Ellis claim and the works strongly suggest that Ellis is taking advantage of the fact he can't be claimed.....and if this fellow is "back" lookout as he owns efforts that can decimate today's competition

3  Blanket of Ice   four-year old gelding is 3 for 3 routing at Santa Anita and ran a couple of lengths better than par in his latest.....and carries 3 lbs less.......not out of this whatsoever if our top selection doesn't run as well as I believe he will

6  Real Big Deal   obvious 57 to 1 layoff sprint drop into claiming and go go go at a route today.....owns back numbers and at SA that are very solid......not out of this whatsoever if our top pick doesn't run as well as I believe he will

race 3    above average clarity

5  Papa Royale   shuffled back in the early stages of a 9F turf race at more than twice today's claiming level and then showed a decent run.......O'Neill is very dangerous at multiple level drop downs.......1st at a route on the dirt but his dirt sprints at SA are fine had he has shown that he can handle 9F on the grass....and this is 1/16th less

6  Y's Passion   acted up at the gate in his last and then proceeded to break 6 or 7 lengths slow out of the metal monster......good time to drop and that is just what Gallagher does....and he gets a significant rider upgrade and less weight on his back

3  Parched   set a contested pace in his latest and tired late......has a good chance to get a loose lead in this spot void of other speed and thus relax more and reserve some of his energy.....lookout if that is what occurs

4  Run Like Rhett

race 4    average clarity

2  Cheekaboomboom   last two grass races are par like efforts for today's level and par appears to be rather good here....and 1 for 1 on the Santa Anita hill grass course.....and with Prat not riding today he draws Stevens and the way Gary has been riding the lawn of late that might be a positive switch.....albeit it a small one at best

5  Calvert Street   likely will be in the mix from the get go likely stalking our 3rd choice with the switch to the red-hot apprentice who rides the hill awfully well.....might see lifetime best today with the switch from Scott Stevens to Roman.......sure seems like a major player here

7  A New Trend   sizzling work tab in preparation for today's race and a rider switch that should fit this speed horse better........rather sure we see this fellows lifetime best this afternoon.....very dangerous sort with the rail 20 feet out

1  Old Man Lake

race 5    average clarity

1  Risky Factor   1st timer of O'Neill's is training as if she is good enough to compete in a bottom level maiden claimer......and she is showing hints of owning some good early speed....and that is an asset here in this abbreviated 5F affair for 3 and up

5  Sweet Miss Derby   trainer is not exactly prolific with 1sters but his filly has 5 gate works showing and decent speed breeding......and it isn't as difficult to get an older 1st time starter to do well at the seldom run five furlong distance

2  Delightful Event   so so work tab for this Jeff Mullins 1st timer but at least her last work is her best......doubt she has early speed so look for her to be running late

7  Seaquet

Long-shot consideration:   3  Royal Astronomer   1st timer's last work is by far her best hinting she is feeling good when it counts the in right before her maiden has tossed 3 winners from 3 starters.....and as stated above it isn't as difficult to get an older 1st time starter to do well at the seldom run five furlong distance

race 6    average clarity

6  Medaglia Gold   showed some decent early speed and then that was about it in her MSW debut which was run 6 weeks ago and versus the I love the solid 6 - 5 and 5 furlong works put in since....and the 1:12:3 is quite impressive for a two year filly in June .......should show speed once again but this time seems likely to hold together

9  Fracas   just purchased in April of 2017 so the stout connections pretty much knew what they were getting.......and the a.m. work as very strong with 3 of her last 5 works being bullet drills......Callaghan has been having a bang up year and can add to it here

8  Acharnement   bet to even money in her MSW debut and disappointed badly.......but blinkers on this afternoon and a solid 5F gate drill just 5 days ago....another trainer having one very nice 2017......dangerous 3rd selection

2  Cute Knows Cute

race 7    average clarity

1  Honor Maker   one race really stands out here and would win this and that was is effort on 15 Dec 16.....tailed off after the significant move forward but she has been away since mid Feb and working as if she is ready to pop a big race once again.....rider/trainer won the only time they teamed up over the last two months.....and both are having very good SA meetings

3  Table for Three   lifetime best and hidden by a troubled trip was her race two back which was run turf to dirt.....turf in last (and with zero action on the board) ......dirt today.......hmmm

4  What a Ten   one in three lifetime races is a fit....and that race was his lone dirt race and it was run at Santa Anita......not out of this if he is ready off of the 2 month break

8  Peach Pike

race 8    below average clarity

5  Artistic Ab   47 to 1 in a 7 horse field strongly suggests that this 2nd time starter was not fully cranked for his MSW debut.....and he might have surprised his connections that he ran as well as he recent work and drops into high-priced claiming....believe he moves forward today and that is hard to say about too many in the field

3  Cats Blame   last might have been nothing more than a dirty up his form spin around the track to put some doubt into the minds of the claiming vultures in his 1st ever up for a tag this afternoon........should be tough if that is the case

9  Rafter One   seems to have a decent shot to range up from the outside close or on the pace with one of those 3 wide - 2 wide trips that win their fair share of the races

8  Tommy Grossman

race 9    average clarity

6  Moonshine Annie   both lifetime grass route races fit well here and Stevens remains up with 2 lbs less to carry.....and Mr. Stevens owns the sod right now giving beautiful rides time after time.....good rider trainer/combo to boot

2  Queen Bee to You   one for one on the grass overcoming a somewhat wide trip in an effort run two races back.....same turf distance - same rider - same trainer - should be closing fast in the late stages

3  Kennedie Sky   another late runner who in her latest had little chance to strut her best stuff because of a lackluster pace up front ........but she still ran 2nd closing fast albeit in a weak final time......not impossible but easy to make 3rd selection

1  Hawk's Journey

race 10    average clarity

2  Ground Rules   nice races run to begin his career back in 2015......fell off a cliff in 2016......woke up some in his 2nd start in 2017 in a race run 8 weeks ago.......moved forward again with a rider upgrade in 3rd start and the effort is somewhat jockey for today and it seems noteworthy as the last time Desormeaux was up was way back in 2015 when this horse was quite good

8  Ajac   jockey isn't exactly who's who in S Cal racing but he is a decent speed rider and it appears as if he can get his mount loose in this spot.....thus dangerous

9  Hot Paris Night   bug boy should sit in a nice stalk position behind our 2nd selection and be in a great spot if the 8 fails to handle the longer distance

4  Sindy's Luck

7  Pumpkin Star

1  Oso
