Santa Anita for Saturday 1 July 2017

Good results yesterday and both today and Sunday appear to be decent race cards.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

8  Kazan   just bought in March for $485K so you have to figure the connections really had a good idea of the talent that this 1st timer possesses......and the work tab for this Callaghan 1ster supports the notion......fairly young trainer is getting awfully good at developing young horses......draws Prat who is really stout with two year old grass runners

2  Armour Plate   tough trip in MSW debut but sure showed he can run some.....blinkers on to help focus more and break better......and Bejarano sticks with the Truman youngster.......and Truman seldom wastes efforts with a given horse when he uses Raffy.......turf pedigree on mom's side of the equation is somewhat of a question mark

6  Greyvitos   trainer is awakening from a prolonged slump and legs up his main man Gonzalez on this nicely trained 1st timer......and the two year old 1st timer owns a good route and grass pedigree

10  Old School Ike

race 2    average clarity

4  Privy   nice maiden debut and since her 2nd place effort her works are stronger than what she showed prior to her MC50K debut.......Sadler will likely have her feeling good as he realizes there is a good chance he will lose her by way of the claiming box......powerful best of 80 eye-popping 4F work supports the notion

1  Li'l Grazen  three year old filly  just claimed by Jack Cavara in her latest for 30K.......steps her up some and rightfully so as 4 of her 5 lifetime starts fit fine here including her last........trainer has a nice year including 1st following a claim......Bejarano best be ready when the gate opens as she has broken poorly 3 of 5 starts

2  Knowitallhousewife   nice forward move in her 2nd lifetime endeavor but will likely need another move in the desired direction this afternoon with the step up in maiden claiming.....and she has a shot to give it off of a bullet work put in at Slr one week ago

3  Anchor Baby

race 3    average clarity

4  Taima the Hawk   very consistent sort and he won his only lifetime race on the dirt and the effort was at Santa Anita and at hot rider/trainer combo in Roman $ Belvoir.....fits the race condition very well

1  Papa Papa Papa   best early speed in the field but Theriot will need to cope with a difficult post.....trainer is stating to heat things up a bit......very dangerous gate to wire attempt here

6  Dream Police   seems best off of ample time between starts and Baltas shows patience and gives it to his five year old gelding......stepped up in latest and won.....steps up again today and with good a.m. works showing......dangerous sort who appears to be in rebound mode

2  Sense of Glory

race 4    above average clarity

3  Ransom the Moon   what an incredible job of training by D'Amato who took a distance turf and AW runner from Woodbine and got him run two big sprint races in his 1st two races under his guidance ......1st effort was par like for today's level....then in the 2nd effort he won a Grade 2 in a better than par effort........continues to work like similar or maybe even more can occur this afternoon

1  Danzing Candy   best on the SA surface (6 4 1 0 ) and might be able to shake free if he can break cleanly from a difficult post at 7F......right guy to get that accomplished in Mike Smith......Baffert is an unconscious 33% win so far at the 1/2 point of 2017.....yikes

4  Cool Cowboy   Kentucky bred who ships back home from Dubai is dangerous if he brings his "A game"......few clues to go by if he will or not

race 5    average clarity

4  Mission Driven   eventful first out following the Miller claim in his latest essentially getting wiped out on the 1st turn losing all chance......tries the same level - distance - and surface once again and does so with an improved work tab......and this time around Miller puts up one of his top go to guys up in Arroyo

2  Pound Piece   obviously has had some major physical issues but he had talent in 2013 at two and some of that showed in his layoff run in his latest and the strength of the effort is hidden......seems likely to get a nice stalk position behind our 3rd selection .......only his 2nd attempt at a route but his pedigree screams "long"

3  Bronzino   very good chance to be loose in this spot void of much speed......low percentage trainer including 1st after the claim but he does get the hot apprentice to ride

5  Color Me Happy

race 6    average clarity

7  New Dancer   D'Amato's 1st time starter has a better pedigree for the turf than the dirt but his preparatory works on the SA dirt are  strong so D'Amato gives him a shot on the dirt for his debut.....if he runs in the p.m. like he trains in the a.m. he should be though.....all that and what a great name for a 1st timer

8  Little Juanito   exits a field loaded with talent but of course it was 7 months do suggest he is ready to roll what degree might be the question mark

5  Zap Again   MSW debut wasn't much despite running 2nd but he had little support at the windows and a soft work tab by Baffert standards.......returns 3 months later for his 2nd lifetime endeavor but with a better work regiment......rather sure we see a better colt today

6  Red Lightning

race 7    average clarity

2  Mr. Brightside   believe this colt's maiden debut was nothing more than a muscle him up grass race and if his a.m. work is worth a hoot it sure worked out......drills since his debut race are vastly improved......drops multiple claiming levels......fairly competent rider in Daniel Vergara gets the call

10  Magical More   all 3 lifetime dirt sprints (and all at SA) are better than par (when adjusted for trip factors) for today's level......last one run has less of a chance of getting the job done than his previous two dirt sprints.....those two races would make him awfully tough in this spot

3  Carey   failed in his 1st ever at a route in his latest......plenty of time off to right the ship for today's sprint race and returns with 1st time blinkers and works that indicate the equipment has helped.......speed is his game and with the addition of blinkers it appears that he will attempt to wire the field

9  Vegas Vic

race 8    average clarity

4  Enola Gray   toss out last and then some as she dueled in a brutal pace and was caught 3 wide........was amazing she only was beaten by 2 3/4L........1st time Prat will be keeping an eye on Stevens who rides Juno who I believe will take back some on her or commit suicide if the "Gray" wants the lead.......if Stevens does press the issue Prat might take back some.....should be fun to watch

2  Madame Stripes  five year old mare has really gotten good and is more than deserving at a shot in a Graded turf race (owns two 2nd's in Grade 2 dirt races in Argentina).....seems likely to sit 3rd hoping the 1 and the 4 set an unsustainable pace

1  Juno   best grass race in the USA is the only time she ran one mile on the grass.....and that race fits here but was a wire to wire effort......see comment for our top choice for her race/trip scenario

race 9    below average clarity

7  Touching Rainbows   returns off of an extended layoff with a major trainer upgrade as in 4% to 20% win........and I believe the D'A has his new shooter ready fresh as he is 2 for 2 on a fast track at SA........and....... it will be awhile until he will see the SA surface after today.......not to mention D'Amata is a stellar 24% win in his last 200 layoff runs greater than 3 months

8  Freddies Dream   seems best competing on conventional dirt yet this is only his 6th race on a,m, work and 2nd out after the Miller claim.....turf to dirt scenario......very dangerous....came close to making him the top pick-a-rue

6  Senator Bob    sure appears to be set up for today's race off of a turf tightener as John Brocklebank is quite dangerous off of very short rest......and......8 days rest sure qualifies for "short rest"

2  Tanners Pride

race 10    average clarity

4  Captain Ron   should be able to save ground sitting 1st or 2nd and with 1st time blinkers and a fast 4F recent work my guess he will have the lead.......last race is par like and there is a decent chance he puts forth even more this afternoon

7  Upperclassman   pressed/stalked our top choice in his last and did so 3 wide......basically ran about as well as he did when you consider his position......Prat stays up and this time he likely will be no worse than 2 wide.....decent shot if he is

6  Amazon Cry   takes that ever dangerous drop out of MSW racing and especially when the trainer is Phillip D'Amato.......coming off of two turf routes so he should really be motoring late with his endurance for those two turf route endeavors

2  Topgallant

10  Tybee Island

3  Mucho Chrome
