Santa Anita for Sunday 2 July 2017

Only 3 days left of racing at Santa Anita and then one day off (yikes) and Los Alamitos starts up on Thursday July 6th. We will provide publications for all eight days of the brief summer meeting at Los Alamitos.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

3  Conquest Smartee   like that this Sadler colt gets to run back in relatively short rest for the first time in his career and with 3 reassuring drills since his latest which was run on 3 pace runner should come flying late with the hot bug boy aboard

2  Aussie Fox   not the best of trips hides a decent maiden debut in a race that was also down the Santa Anita hill turf course......should be a major player if the three-year old colt learned a little something from his debut

4  Placido   colt has definitely shown enough life in his two lifetime races that if he handles his first on the grass he should be a factor in the outcome of this race.......but it is a tough call as to how much he will appreciate the grass

6  Milhaud

race 2    average clarity

2  Factorize   Peter Miller 1st time starter is showing plenty of speed in the a.m. and might be a bargain for the $67K purchase price paid in April

3  Diamondsandpearls   extremely expensive recent buy for Baffert and company is working like you would think she should for her MSW debut......should finish well as she has already worked from the gate 6F in a very solid 113 Flat for a two-year old filly in mid June

4  Call Betsy   yet another two-year 1st timer recently bought and training as if Bonde and company (or whoever was responsible for the purchase) knew what they were doing.....and it is quite interesting that Stevens lands here as he seldom rides for the conditioner

race 3    average clarity

3  She Began Again   very eventful MC debut breaking poorly and then racing way too wide....quite impressive to only be 3 1/2 lengths behind the winner at the wire......likely will learn from the experience......7F seems to be a slight ? mark

6  Petra Dee   13 % trainer in 2017 for Dan Morgan but much better than that in 3 trainer categories that are relevant here......layoffs - 2nd career race - shippers.......and the filly sure is working like he will handle the conventional dirt which he is well-bred for

5  Specter   very unusual for Richard Mandella to have a mdn20K 1st timer starter.......sure has put in copious furlongs of work.....and draws the attention of Prat and his agent......I always take note about things that are out of the "norm" and usually consider it a positive........ and this qualifies for that

4  My Carmela

race 4    above average clarity

1  Painting Corners   exceptionally strong 1st on the turf and down the hill for the MC50K level.....and the strength of the effort was verified at she won by 5 1/4 and time wise would have beaten the other division of MC50K's by about 9 her graduation day she should be in the mix from the opening bell

3  You're Late   sure should appreciate the class relief and the rider upgrade to Gary Stevens.......continues to train like a happy healthy individual.......1st on the hill is a question mark but not a big one with Mr. Stevens up to guide her along thru the zigzag

2  Tiz Deliteful   1 for 1 on the grass (albeit only a 5F affair) and 0 for 8 on other surfaces......latest on the dirt was run off of a 2 1/2 month layoff and was better than appears in print (checking & running wide).....should feel good back in 3 weeks....interesting sort

7  Aura Rose

race 5    average clarity

5  Surrender Now   powerful MSW debut win supported by a good final times and gaps to 2nd & preparatory 4F work just 5 days ago......filly is sharp.....trainer is sharp.......should be tough

2  Gorgeous Ginny   another with a very impressive MSW winning debut........earned a Santucci fig that is the same as the top selection......and like our top pick the effort was supported by large gaps to 2nd and 3rd place.....and Diodoro is one of the better trainers at getting maidens that graduate to also win in their next out

3  Spirit of Shanghai   seems like somewhat of a fall off in displayed ability to our 3rd selection but she did manage to break poorly and still win her maiden debut in a mdn50K.......doubt she can move forward enough to handle our top two selections if either of them improve at all......stranger things have happened

race 6    average clarity

3  Blame It On Alphie   filly appears to be the controlling speed in this one mile grass affair......Smith should have her on the lead or in a ground saving stalk position......three year old filly is capable of winning on or off the pace..........Richard Mandella trained.......hard not to like

2  Meadowsweet   impressive first out of the box MSW win down the majestic SA hill grass course.......and working awfully well since........good route pedigree to say the least.......fairly sure she fires another strong effort but she does lose Smith to our top selection.....that basically was the final decision that separated our top two picks

5  Just a Little Hope   two very strong dirt sprint races to start career.......kind of surprised they don't stay on the dirt as she seems to have plenty of potential on it........turf pedigree is average at best.....but then again Hendricks is stout 1st at a route and Stevens remains up

4  Heavenly Thought

race 7    below average clarity

1  Prime Issue   drop is a positive especially from the Miller barn.......cut back in distance is a positive......and the connections might be all out to win today as this fellow appreciates the SA dirt and it will be awhile until he can compete on it again

3  Zuri Chop   Cerin is very dangerous 2nd out following a claim and that is the case today for this six-year-old gelding.....rider upgrade for today......and I like the confidence that Cerin shows in his new shooter as he steps him up a notch in claiming price

7  Kristi's Copilot   decent sprinter but oddly he seldom gets to run in one turn races.....does today.......barn does well with limited starters......interesting sort

6  Papa Turf

race 8    below average clarity

4  Winning Causeway   0 for his last 20 and likely more that for Sherlock 1st following a claim......might break that horrendous record here as if he can get this gelding to repeat his last with a slightly better trip

8  London Legacy   Diodoro is just the opposite of Sherlock 1st following a claim as he is very dangerous with a new shooter.........23 June work indicates this gelding is ready to roll off of the 7 week break.......Frey rides thru the claim

5  Ajac   Jeffery Metz is extremely successful dropping multiple levels with a given the tune of 28 wins in his last 84.......multiple level drop here.....and 1 for 1 at the somewhat specialty distance of 7 furlongs

2  Anxious Times

Long-shot consideration:    9  Alex Rossi   seems like a good spot for a "fresh" runner especial one that is training so well.......only race at 7F was a solid effort......owns some solid back numbers including the 7F race

race 9    average clarity

9  Blackjackcat   2 for 2 on the lawn when not competing in Graded races.....and quite  a few of his Graded races aren't too shabby......and draws the attention of Gary Stevens who is doing awfully well with his turf mounts

1  Abbey Vale   in rebound mode and very deserving of another step up in class.......not only is he improving in final time but also with his early pace,,,,,,,the combination often validates a horse feeling very good

4  Tequila Joe   hard call how ready this Michael McCarthy runner is but if he is fit and ready and runs anywhere close to his last 2 Grade 3 races at Arlington he will be tough in this softer spot

8  Clever Royal

3  Cimpl Man

6  Conquest Sabre Cat
