Del Mar for Wednesday 19 July 2017

Opening Day Del Mar. Life is good!

Best of luck as always!

race 1    below average clarity

6  Papa Royale   very solid in last two races and back in short rest of only 11 days....only time this gelding ran off of short rest (12 days) he ran a decent effort by only being beaten on the turf by 2 3/4 lengths stepping up from maiden 20K to maiden 75K.....no easy task to say the least

4  Our Nation   not much in sprints these days but seems to still run fairly well in two turn races....last might have been a gimme of sorts to get away with today's drop....the fact that Prat sticks around supports the notion

5  Getoffmyback    believe the plan here for this Miller sprinter who still has something to prove in route races is to try to shake loose......and if he does.......he..............might...........go...........all............the............way (hey - football season is close)

3  Summer Buddha

race 2    average clarity

1  Pedro Cerrano   Peter Miller seems to have pointed this four-year old for today's race as this 3 for 6 lifetime gelding is a perfect 2 for 2 at Del Mar and has some stout drills at Slr......and when someone as sharp as trainer Peter Miller points a laid up horse for a given spot you best take note

3  Where Y'at Joe Joe   both times the today's jockey T C Baze rode this Glatt five-year old he ran 2 of his stronger races.....and......this gelding's only 2 races run at Dmr are solid 2nd places finishes.....also......Glatt was heating things up at the end of SA

5  Logan's Moon  lost to our 2nd selection in his latest and he had a good trip....but he was claimed by Ellis in the race and he shows a vastly improved % furlongs near bullet work since......needs to move forward and might

race 3    above average clarity

6  Alsatian   only place the that very impressive apprentice rider Evin Roman has struggled some is in route grass races....but....he handled this colt nicely in his last in a one mile grass race at SA.......race two back at 9F on the turf is very strong.....thus......this youngster should appreciate going 1/16 more than his latest

4  Over Par   blinkers put on in his latest and the connections had to be happy with the way he responded.....earned a solid number with not the best of trips.....believe he will be up for similar today but take note that he does have a tendency to hang in the stretch

5  Accountability   appears to have the lead here and that makes him dangerous with a good front end grass rider in Baze aboard.....trainer is having one of his better years in quite some time

1  Ibon

race 4    above average clarity

8  Classy Tune   very solid 2nd lifetime start especially off of a 7 month hiatus from the game......MSW debut wasn't too shabby either.....his latest will be tough to beat and if he moves forward it likely will take a bad trip to beat him

3  Pretty Owl   believe this is another nice Baffert 1st time starter who is showing plenty of talent in the a.m......strongly believe he will show plenty of talent this afternoon and he better if our top choice holds form

6  Literary Critic   very impressive work tab for this Clifford Sise 1st time starter with numerous works put in and quite of few that are stout......and he is able to get the high in demand bug boy to accept the mount

5  Discreetly Leah

race 5    average clarity

6  Tyfosha   strong run in his MSW debut on June 9th at SA......O'Neill filly ran one of the stronger adjusted for trouble S Cal figs for a two-year old so far and that is for either sex.....and she just worked a bullet 6F work which is no easy task for a two-year old to grab a best of 21 bullet as far as 6F

8 Just a Smidge   just bought in May for a cool 425K so the connections pretty much knew what they were looking at......and "the connections" included Sir Baffert......enough said

1  Broome   dangerous looking works for this Miller 1st time starter in that the best works are out of the gate....hints this filly is competitive and also "well-meant" in her debut into the wonderful world that is thoroughbred racing

3  Varanasi

race 6    average clarity

7  Moonless Sky   decent chance for the Truman barn to keep the good times rolling (as the trainer has been hot this spring and summer) with this consistent filly who just keeps improving since Truman took over the training duties 4 races back......and Kent Desormeaux has been aboard for all of the races

3  Family Meeting   nice to see Tom Proctor back in S Cal and he seems to have his 1st shipper ready to roll training sharply at one of the USA's better training facilities out East......and can Proctor ever ship and win at the rate of 21% with his last 540

12  Nodiac   good history at Dmr and this filly should appreciate running the longest race of her career as she owns a pedigree that suggests she will be able to run all day long.......D'Amato is solid 3rd out following layoffs.....and.....he gets Flavien Prat to ride

5  Dynamic Mizzes K

race 7    average clarity

(AE 12  Tribal Jewel  has a shot if draws into the field)

5  Gato Del Oro   monstrous move forward in this colt's 2nd lifetime start the kind that usually makes you leery about the next start as the stress on the body often takes its toll....but the works since strongly suggest it did not and that he might pop a big run once again this time around two turns..... but...... only one furlong more than his graduating last

7  Absolutely Stylish   one and done so far to start career....1st race 22 Oct 16...next race 29 Apr 17.....so you would surmise that Truman will have him more than ready for his 3rd start as it might be months until he can recover and race again.....and his last like our top choice is much better than par for today's higher level

3  Tell Me a Story   dangerous speed in this spot and that is a scary thing when Evin Roman and his 5 lbs break is in the saddle for a Peter Miller runner.....believe the top two choices are better horses with much more potential but that does mean this fellow can't steal this race .....how is speed doing so far?

2  Karma King

race 8    average clarity

1  Arms Runner   believe that Miller has been shopping for a spot with this unbeaten in 2 lifetime starts on the turf three-year old......he scratched him 2 weeks ago and 3 weeks ago......draws the one post....colt owns a pedigree that should handle one mile.......impressive 1:24:3 Slr work put in two weeks ago.......trainer is solid in non-Graded Stakes races like this affair

2  Bird Is the Word   bad ride by Roman racing way too wide in this colt's last which was at one mile on the grass......so far the only Achilles Heel for the kid is in turf routes ....so....the switch to Stevens might be quite the rider upgrade....repeat of his last with a good trip would make him a major player

9  Placido   impressive win down the SA hill in his 1st ever on the grass....and in his race prior to that he showed he can handle route racing when he raced way to wide in a dirt race at SA and still was only beaten by 4 1/2L

5  Pioneer Lad

race 9    average clarity

4  Spiced Perfection   Koriner youngster has had 4 or 5 lengths of trip trouble in both lifetime starts......green in her debut breaking bad and then she was predictably caught wide breaking from a tough 9 post at 5F in her 2nd start.....continues to train like a happy healthy two-year old filly

9  Streak of Luck   very eventful MSW debut for this Matt Chew baby as she steadied badly at the start and then ran a little wide....gave her 7L of trip adjustment in the race which was an extremely fast heat for the level of racing....she earned a Santucci fig that was better than par

6  Smiling Tigress   blinkers go on today for this 2nd time starter who sure shows vastly better a.m. work since her so so debut hinting that equipment change might have worked in a big way......Bejarano sticking with the two-year old supports the notion.......believe this filly will be in the mix from the get go

3  Helen's Tiger

Long-shot consideration:   8  Tapitha Bonita   dangerous looking work tab for this Sal Gonzalez MSW 1st time starter.....and the 1st time starter's coming out of the smaller barns sure can get ignored at Dmr and go off at lofty odds

race 10    below average clarity

7  Shackleford Banks   wide trip versus tougher in his last somewhat hides the strength of his race.....the effort worked out to be about 3L better than par for today's 16K open claiming level.......and today we get a significant rider upgrade

1  Dream Police   apprentice Laura Werner and with her 7 lbs weight break is starting to figure things out and especially so in dirt route races where she has won 2 of her last 5 and the other 3 hit the board......Baltas gelding ran a solid race two back at today's one mile distance running wide up on the pace and still winning.....does well 2nd out after a break and that is the case here

2  Anxious Times   six year old might be up for a solid move forward for Glatt to move this fellow up 3 claiming levels after dropping him way down to 8K.......Glatt is often dangerous when he makes strange moves/placements with a given horse

4  Private Prospect

3  Preacher Roe
