Del Mar for Saturday 22 July 2017

Kudos to Del Mar for putting on such a nice week of racing. S Cal racing at it's best!

Best of luck as always!

race 1    below average clarity

7  Midnight Harbor   woke up in his latest and the strength of the effort is somewhat disguised........nice 3 work series since......seems likely to at least put forth as much energy as he did in his last race

2  Mr. Hale   won his lone race run at Del Mar and it was also his maiden debut......last was improved......looking for his 2nd win in his 5th lifetime start and racing on the Dmr surface might be the one of the catalysts to get it

1  Golden Atlantic   inside speed has done well the 1st hree days of the new meeting and this five-year old might own the most early gas....and gets an underrated speed rider in Brayan Pena up

5  True Ranger

race 2    below  average clarity

4  Alley Boss   1 for 1 at Dmr and 1 for 12 everywhere else.......stout work tab put into this colt by Molly Pearson......seems like a very smart move to take advantage of a track surface this four-year old appears to like

6  Cherubim   sure like his latest .....and his work series since ......and the step up in claiming seems like a good sign........ a trifecta of reasons to  believe that he is doing well......he does has something to prove on the Del Mar surface ( 5 0 2 0)

3  Pray Hard   consistent sort including on the Del Mar dirt drops following the O'Neill claim......bad claim or a bold move......we shall see

race 3    average clarity

1  Neighborhood Bully   might not have been fully cranked up in his MSW to go off at 20 to 1........ and if that is true he might be very tough today.......because......he ran a strong race breaking a little slow and running on a somewhat dull rail at Lrc.....did well to beat more than 1/2 the field

9  Bank Water   trainer is usually not ready with 1st time starters but 3 of this colt's last 4 works are out of the gate....that and his last two drills are solid......usually Keith Desormeaux works them very easy....not the case here......believe the trainer goes against the grain today

4  United Patriot   works are decent and the fact that this OKIE-bred went for $155K at sale hints he has talent.....we shall see

5  An Ocala Tan

Long-shot consideration:   2  World Wide Blame   1st time starter hasn't missed a beat going way back to 5 May.....he has hit the track every 6 or 7 days without needing a break....you would think he is more than ready to rock and roll for Bonde and friends

race 4    above average clarity

6  Ashleyluvssugar   extremely consistent six-year-old turf runner competing at any distance less than 12 furlongs........and if he has a favorite distance on the sod it might be at today's 9F

2  Hunt   last was likely needed as his barn mate ran his eyeballs out t0 win the Grade 3 affair......that and I like the rider switch (for a grass horse) and the fact that D'Amato adds blinkers to shake things up a little for this successful turf sprinter who is now learning about two turn racing

7  Abbet Vale   by far at his best competing at today's turf distance ( 3 2 1 0)......O'Neill used to be stout getting high-priced claims (just snatched for a cool $62,500) to run well in Stakes races

5  Up With the Birds

race 5    average clarity

9  Trapalanda   Ellis has become quite dangerous with maiden claiming 1st time starters and that hasn't always been the case.....three year old colt has put in copious furlongs of work and his latest work at 6 furlongs out of the gate is quite good for the level of racing he is breaking into.....and mom has tossed 4 winners from 4 starters including one Stakes winner

7  Sunday Nap   away since last Fall following 2 races that fit just fine at today's lower level and his debut is better than appears in print.....so he showed he can run fresh....... and the a.m. he has put in supports the idea that he is once again ready "fresh"

3  Flash Henry   toss out this fellow's MSW debut back on 20 May as he had a brutal trip .......works since the "no shot" race are very good likely to take advantage of the fact he appears risky as far as a claim goes....very dangerous

5  Adventurous

race 6    above average clarity

5  Mackie's Water   2 for 2 at today's 9F turf distance.. ....and his latest sure looks awfully good in this spot........going for his 3rd win in a row since the addition of blinkers on......hard not to see him being a major factor of the outcome of this race if he holds form

4  Sorry Erick   returns home after beating 1/2 the field in the Ohio Derby......previous race was on the grass at today's distance.....like our top choice that race is quite a bit better than par for today's alw level....and I like that he also shipped back home for the race that day as well........in that case from the FG

3  Billy Big  seems a bit short of our top two but at least he appears to be racing on his favorite turf surface.....and then there is the D'Amato factor with a grass horse....as in they can really jump forwards sometimes seemingly out of nowhere

10  Fashion Business

race 7    average clarity

4  Raven Creek   Mullins 1ster sure finished up his work regiment impressively hinting he is peaking at the right time......and his a.m. work also hints he has some early gas....good long lasting rider/trainer combo to boot in Baze/Mullins

9  Gracida   hard not to like this O'Neil 1st time starter training up to snuff for his debut....but.....maybe more importantly he was just purchased for 400K in March so the connections had a good idea of what they were getting

3  Bahamian   another recently purchased (in Apr for 160K) that appears ready to roll for his debut.....and his trainer Simon Callaghan sure is getting quite a few good young horses and doing well with them

8  So Long Sailor

race 8    below average clarity

10  Girl Downstairs   only grass race run on firm turf since the Ellis claim was her last and it was the best effort/fig of her career.......if Ellis and Nakatani can coax another similar race out of her today from a tough post she should be tough as nails

11  Ok Doll   filly has learned to rate some and that makes her more dangerous than ever....and Bejarano appears to be at the top of his game right now.....and that is saying something

1  Bombilate   Cassidy can be cagey with his Euro invaders so when I see an eye-popping work like this girl's drill on 13 June and then only modest drills to follow.........I think......... it is go go go city to the windows for the barn

9  You're a Goat

Long-shot consideration:  Lady Tapit   lone lifetime grass race was run 2 back and it was one of those pace-less races where you need to ignore the final time.....and in the race this mare had a brutal trip losing about 8L do to trip

race 9    above average clarity

3  Arrogate   seems destined to be a legendary horse.......enough said

1  Accelerate   2 for 2 at Del Mar.......blinkers go on and his works hint it might have made a good horse even better......still he will likely need our top selection to blow his "legendary" status to win this

2  El Huerfano   as they say "best of the rest"

race 10    below average clarity

3  Principle Bob   in every other mode and his lone grass race was on the wrong end of the pendulum......race two back on the dirt is very good and disguised by very wide trip.....he sure is bred to handle the sod.......right end up the pendulum today........hmmm

7  Lucky Soul   nice forward move in his 2nd lifetime start and first in a grass route.......and in the race which he nearly won he was shuffled back and ran a little wide........should be solid here if he brings similar today

9  Ready Aim   impressive better than par (adjusted for all the relevant factors that make up a Santucci fig) in his last his 2nd lifetime start.....1st at a route and 1st on the sod....bred to handle both......Mandella charge is not out of this by any means

10  Potent

5  Borg

4  Icy Street
