Del Mar for Sunday 23 July 2017

Seems like a nice card to finish off week one of racing at beautiful Del Mar.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

3  Dancing Belle   like so many Keith Desormeaux youngsters this filly appears to be running into shape......and her last is better than appears in print.....seems ready to put in a good stretch run in today's 1st at six furlongs for the two year old set

6  Lady Bug   believe that Richard Mandella wanted to pass on the abbreviated sprints at 4 1/2F to 5 1/2F and wait for the 1st available at 6 furlongs.....copious furlongs of work put in.....should finish up his debut with vigor

4  Newport Breeze   21 to 1 in MSW debut hints this filly wasn't fully cranked and yet she beat 1/2 of the field in her debut....3 solid drills since her debut......highly likely she moves forward this afternoon

2  D D's Lute

race 2    average clarity

5  Private Terrace   new-found versatility for this mare who took back and still was able to win which is something she has had trouble with in the past.....that gives the sharp bug boy options in a race that seems to favor the late runners....(3 2 1 0) since the "Dorfer" claim

4  Sheswildnfree   race seemingly is "advantage to the off pace runners" and the right guy up to handle the situation in Bejarano.....five year old mare likes ample time between starts and gets it

3  Swissarella   sprint - sprint - maneuver in play here......rider should be able to grab the wood with the two horses inside of him rather slow....and the rail has been good the 1st 4 days of the meeting

2  Lirica Heat

race 3    average clarity

2  Perfectly Majestic   seems like he can be in the driver's seat with a nice mid pack ground saving trip (at least thru turn one) and do so on a turf surface he appreciates....... and with one nice grass rider in Kent Desormeaux

7  Vyjack   seven year old runs well fresh which is the case today......and his a.m. work sure supports the notion that won't change that this afternoon off of the 8 month hiatus from the game

6  Blackjackcat   won his latest and it was the only time has he competed at one mile on the turf on firm turf......that race was at Santa Anita and so far it seems that his best work has been on the Del Mar turf........Stevens stays up......dangerous sort

5  Calculator

race 4    above average clarity

4  Red Lightning   very powerful race two back in his 2nd lifetime start and then in his 3rd he fell off some......blinkers on and vastly better a.m. work....hints the equipment has him back to where he was two back....we shall see

6  Little Juanito   if he repeats what he did last year at Dmr in his 2nd out of his career he has as good a shot of winning this projected fast heat of MSW runners.......2nd out in 2017 is a very similar scenario as his 2nd lifetime start in 2016

9  Way Gone   strong works for a rare MSW 4-year-old 1st timer for Baffert and company.....the kind of quality works that would often make for a Baffert top selection.....but the potential shown in our 1st two selections is quite significant......thus 3rd pick

1  Camino de Estrella

race 5    below average clarity

4  Patentar   takes a logical drop and gets a rider upgrade to Prat who has won his last 5 of 9 teaming up for Callaghan......six year old is 2 for 4 at the one mile turf distance......0 for 5 at Dmr on the grass but has multiple efforts that fit at today's lower level

7  Royal Albert Hall   another in need of some class relief and gets it recent 5F drill is his best work in some time.....that suggests O'Neill knows he might lose him by way of the claiming box and wants to get the most out of him today in case he does

1  Ain't Misbehavin   deep closing running style really fits this grass course (at least in the 1st week) so I am ignoring his lone grass race which wasn't much...... especially since Desormeaux (who seems to get the most out of him) jumps back on after being absent for his last couple

10  Little Scotty

Long-shot consideration:  12  Wood Machine   very consistent grass horse and he appears sharp in the morning.......retains Stevens who is awfully good at getting over from difficult posts......likely will get ignored at the windows

race 6    average clarity

10  Rafter One   best route speed in the race and takes a small but meaningful drop in MC........decent chance to clear all by turn one and if he does he should be tough to wheel in

9  Hard Arch   Cerin is off to a hot start at the new meeting and might keep things rolling here with this proven route horse......solid riding apprentice should be able to stalk our top choice......dangerous sort

1  Charming Morty   turf to dirt scenario muscle up potential).......that and his dirt race two back is par like and a much better jock is up today than rode that race.......and I always like when a new trainer takes over a given horse and drops a level or two or in this case "three"

8  Topgallant

Long-shot consideration:   6  Bow and Arrow   broke poorly in his MSW debut at CD and then he showed plenty of life in a 6F affair......his pedigree suggests he should be able to handle 8F........dangerous shipper from the midwest

race 7    average clarity

3  Lull   appears to dislike the Kee grass course which many horses do......toss those two races out......and it is easy to toss the race where she fell after clipping heels......other 4 race (4 2 2 0) and earned some strong figs in a couple of them.......trainer knows how to ship and win

4  Enthrall   dangerous shipper from France who just beat the boys in her last which was 30 days ago......draws the meets leading rider in week one

7  Sircat Sally   not easy to put this undefeated filly as 3rd pick but the turf course has been tough on speed all week and this filly doesn't seem a sharp recently in the a.m......still .......she should be tough to get by late .........just not as tough as usual

6  Spy Ring

race 8    average clarity

6  Midnight Pleasure   three-year old gelding has plenty of talent when he brings his "A game" and hopefully getting back on the Del Mar dirt will help bring it out of him today.....1 win and a 3rd at Dmr in two starts and the 3rd was in the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity

4  Prime Issue   also likes the Dmr surface with 3 wins in 6 starts......appears to be the speed of the speed.....high percentage rider/trainer combo......Peter Miller after going 0 for 10 on opening day is back making frequent visits to the circle of joy

7  Blue Anchor   yet another horse who appreciates racing on the Dmr dirt.......five year old seemingly needs contact to the front end of things and does well going eye to eye (very few do).......dangerous sort stepping back on a dirt he likes

3  Superior Status

race 9    average clarity

10  New Dancer   exits a very fast heat of 6 1/2F MSW runners where getting beat by 9L with the trip he had worked out to be better than par.......switches to a route and the grass for his 2nd lifetime start.......bred for both in a big way.....and gets a significant rider upgrade.....believe D'Amato was always pointing to this race

7  Brulee   no works until May following his lone lifetime start in Feb. hint this well-bred grass horse was hurt in his MSW debut.....switches trainers for his 2nd lifetime start and the work regiment hints his new trainer has him has tossed 3 turf winners from 6 starters.....apprentice has struggled in two turn grass races but is starting to look better (more comfortable) in them

3  Indoctrination   double barrel action from the D'Amato barn as he also trains our top choice......Ireland invader ran a strong maiden debut an the AW losing by only a head and beating 9 horses.....very well bred for the sod......should fit well in S Cal racing....just not sure how ready he is today.....but lookout if he is

5  Cascade Rock

2  Sonneteer

8  Conqueror
