Del Mar for Sunday 13 August 2017

Seems like a decent race card. Let's call it a 6.5 on the 1 to 10 scale of things.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

4  Hard Arch   consistent in route dirt races.....latest run is disguised by 7.5L of trip trouble......drops one MC level......better post than his latest......back to Gonzo who has handled this colt well

6  Topgallant   exits the same race as our top choice and earned a similar adjusted for trouble Santucci fig.......three yer old might have more endurance today with his 1st route race under his belt

3  Watered Down   seems like a decent spot for a sprinter to attempt his 1st route as their isn't much speed in here and he might be able to snatch the lead......his pedigree is fine to get a mile.....rider is cold looking for his 1st win at the meeting....not impossible to get it here

2  Trustworthy

race 2    average clarity

2  My Golden One   1st time racing with Freeman doing the training and I like the rider change he makes.....last two races sure fit fine here......so......if his new trainer gets the same out of him expect more from this four-year old with the rider upgrade

7  Papa Royale   bad race in latest his 1st on the Dmr dirt....but O'Neill shakes things up taking the blinkers off.......and the race 2 back with the blinkers put on led to a 7L win......like that Baze stays put hinting his last is not a true indication of what he's got......rebound city might be (and needs to be) in the cards

5  Hero Ten All   needs to wake-up in a big way....started his career with two good races hinting he was going to a nice horse.....didn't work out that way.......significant drop seems overdue but it has finally arrived

3  Mostly Cloudy

race 3    average clarity

8  Eric the Trojan   5 furlongs of turf when Prat has been up has led to record of (3 1 1 1) and all three races appeared tougher than this race and were run at Del Mar.....away since the 10th of June but appears ready to roll for Carava and company

4  Bottle Rocket   another when he is "right" who appreciates the Dmr 5F turf races and it showed in his latest which run one week ago.......and today we get a rider upgrade.....such a deal

1  Secreto Primero   laid up since New Years Day but the last time he competed "fresh" he won a turf sprint down the SA hill......and like our top two selections he usually handles the 5F of sod at Del Mar quite well

5  County Lineman

race 4    average clarity

10  Soul Straight   Indiana bred 1st timer shows up in the Baffert barn and draws Mike Smith......that alone sets off an alarm bell.....as does the fact that when he starting training at Dmr his works sure improved,,,,and he has worked 4 times on the Dmr dirt......sure appears ready......does need to cope with a bad post

7  Eskimo Roses   Mick Ruiz is 3 for his last 9 with MSW 1st timers and the works hint he has this one primed and ready to roll as well......speed and endurance has been put into this two-year old gelding

6  Frenchmen Street   another two-year old gelding first time starter working like he is meant and ready for his MSW debut......and it is like old times with the more than capable Proctor and Stevens at the controls

1  Treasure Hunter

race 5    average clarity

7  Red Lightning   last with the switch to today's rider Kent Desormeaux is very strong and is likely to take down this race if he can repeat the effort.....but.....I am a touch leery about his chances of getting another 1/2 furlong without flattens some......or......I would have rated this race "above average clarity"

5  Cats Blame   smartly placed back in a MSW race following his best ever which was run in  Mdn75K claiming race......that race fits well here......trainer has been cold for a very long period but sure seems due to bust out of a prolonged slump

1  Psychedelicat   Hollendorfer has won 5 of his last 15  going from maiden claiming to MSW......that and the recent a.m. work for this colt is vastly improved.....not out of the win picture by any means

4  Little Juanito

race 6    above average clarity

4  Constellation   nicely improved since Hollendorfer took over the training duties 5 races back......and back to Prat (2 1 1 0 both Graded races)  making for one significant rider upgrade........she should be tough from the opening bell

3  Skye Diamonds   beat our top selection in latest and might again as she is 4 for 5 "at the distance" and all 4 of those wins were with today's rider Tiago Pereira up

2  Bendable   filly has done little wrong in 6 lifetime starts and she is training "lights out".......Smith/Mandella have won  3 of their last 5 as a team......filly faces the toughest test of her career but seems extremely well prepared for it

race 7    average clarity

6  Tooreen Dancer   nasty trip in her U S of A debut where she earned an adjusted for trouble Santucci fig that is quite a bit better than par for today's level....that and in her only other start she beat 13 foes in Ireland at 16 to 1....and 2nd in that race came back to win........and today we get a rider upgrade to boot

8  Spooky Woods   blinkers on in her latest really improved her as she almost won a Grade 2 dirt race at 17 to 1.....can she run as well 1st on the turf is the ? mark.....if she can she should have been top pick-a-rue

3  Saburai   seems best in turf routes and her latest endeavor kind of hides that as she lost about 8 or 9 lengths with a very wide trip which was caused by another runner

7  Cynthiana

Long-shot consideration:   5  November Tale   last was a spin around the Dmr turf course.....to tighten up..... and be ready for her 2nd start in the USA.....the fact that Van Dyke stays up supports the notion

race 8    below average clarity

6  General Kitten   nice awakening 1st time racing on dirt to graduate in his latest......that race fits well here if he receives a better trip as does the pace scenario that appears to favor his late running style .....1st at Dmr is a ? mark

11  Irish Freedom   1 for 1 at Del Mar.....brutal trips in last two races including the SA Derby where he did awfully well to only be 6 3/4L behind the winner at the wire.......works put in by Baffert hint he is wound up like a top......tightly spaced and numerous

1  Tribal Jewel   extremely consistent dirt route runner and he has won his last 3 Dmr dirt races......he should be in good position on or near the front saving ground with a good speed rider up

4  Milton Freewater

Long-shot consideration:   3  Beantown Boys   fired his lifetime best when last seen on 1 Dec. in a route at Dmr.........returns with the best work regiment for a laid up Hess runner in many a moon.......red hot rider/trainer combo in Desormeaux/Hess....owns tactical speed and a good post.....,seems very likely to get a nice trip

race 9    average clarity

2  Gia Lula   sprint-sprint-route scenario for 3rd lifetime start and 1st on the grass which she owns a good pedigree for......retains Stevens who is on fire on the lawn and teaming up with Glatt (also hot) with good success....as in 3 for last 11

10  Dawn Traveller   beat 11 horses in her lone start which was at 6F on the turf in May in Ireland......Callaghan who is having a very nice year gets Prat to ride........ and when he puts up a top rider on his overseas invaders they are usually very "live"

4  Polished   two-year old 1st time starter is bred inside out for the turf......and when Hollendorfer legs up Smith it is usually for a youngster with potential which this filly has if she lives up to her turf breeding

8  Misty Slew

5  Ladybug
