Del Mar for Saturday 19 August 2017

The Del Mar meet was rolling along nicely for The Racing Digest but hit a road block the last two days. Good card both in quality and handicapping to mount a rebound. Be back with you for 10 more races Sunday.

NOTE: Nice carryover and a mandatory pick 6 payoff today

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

6  Hoppitty   last at a route was poor but should serve as an endurance builder.....race 2 back was very strong albeit at only 5F.....Baze should sit either 1st or 2nd early in what shapes up to be a slow pace ......if that is so 6 1/2F should be within his reach

5  Southern Thunder   trainer is capable of getting maiden 1st time starters ready and if he has this youngster ready (out-of-town works seem good) he gets to start his career versus a soft looking group

1  The Real McCann   takes that magical drop from MSW racing to bottom level mdn20K........toss his 2nd start which was on the grass......his debut fits and is disguised......should be motoring late appreciating the 6 1.2 furlongs when most in here will not

3  Bucky Goldstein

race 2    average clarity

5  Distinctive B   5 for 10 at 6 furlongs.....0 for 5 at other dirt distances.......and his last at 6 1/2 furlongs is very strong nearly winning despite a wide trip pressing a hot pace......ran a 108 flat last summer at Del Mar and might be up to that lofty accomplishment once again with the cut back in distance and 2nd out after the layoff

3  Lord Simba   (5 2 3 0) at 6F and was able to crack the 109 flat barrier twice.....away since 20 May but working like he is meant and ready.......sure seems tough here if he handles his 1st ever on the Del Mar dirt

2  Prime Issue   4 for 7 at Dmr and has won his last two races for fun with the 5 lbs bug boy up.....but......he will need his very best if either of our top two picks run the race they are capable of

race 3    average clarity

7  Record Highs   fell off in last at 1 1/16th but ran a very strong effort two back at today's one mile distance.....and a solid subtle best in a while 4F work hints this Gaines runner is going to rebound to that effort

4  Incredible Luck   another who needs to find their effort two back and is cutting back in distance which should help his finishing power this afternoon......Brice Blanc has looked comfortable on this colt and gets to ride him for a 7th straight race

6  Rare Candy   sprint prep in latest and likely a full-blown go today.......Talamo rides this gelding all the time which should enhance his chances of working out a decent trip....if he does she should be a factor late

5  El Tovar

Long-shot consideration:  2  Calvert Street   gelding is stellar breaking from the gate.....that should help the struggling apprentice keep inside position for a good portion of the race.....cut back in distance seems like a plus.....and this fellow has a good history racing off of short rest.....22 days since his last qualifies for that

race 4    above average clarity

9  Special Story   believe this gelding is feeling awfully good as he is able to return off of only 16 days rest and with a solid work since his last....and he drops down....should be tough

8  Oopper Wallah   obvious endurance building route turf tightener in his latest......drops below the claiming level he was taken for 2 races back......retains Stevens......seems like another dangerous well-meant runner

1  Aeon   one of the best times to drop is off of long layoffs....that is the case here for this Truman four-year old who is training as if he is ready fresh off of the extended break......good rider/trainer combo to boot

3  Mt. Leinster

race 5    average clarity

5  Indoctrination   last appeared to be an indoctrination of sorts and not too shabby of one at that.....rider upgrade to Pratt.....should be indoctrinated now.....believe this colt is sitting on a big race in his 3rd career start and 2nd in the good old U S of A

1  Aussie Fox   was able to clear all from a difficult post 11 in his last.....better post today....retains Bejarano who is likely sitting on a horse who has more endurance today coming off of his 1st turf route....should save ground sitting on or off of the pace .....such a deal

8  Troublewithatee   double barrel action from the D'A as he also trains our top selection.......last appears to be a sprint gimme (and a stronger one than appears on paper) to be ready for today's turf route in his 2nd out following an extended hiatus from the game.....only grass race is solid closing very fast late into a pedestrian pace

4  Lucky Soul

Long-shot consideration:  7  Potent   little shot in his last his 1st ever on the grass as he pressed a solid pace on opening day where speed fared poorly the 1st couple of days on the grass at Del Mar....that and trainer Scott Hansen has been waking-up of late

race 6    average clarity

6  Tyfosa   ran 2nd with a gap of 5L to 3rd in MSW debut.....ran 2nd with a gap of 8L in her 2nd start......both races were quite a bit better than par.......will she be unlucky and catch a "monster" for a 3rd straight time.....will shall see

5  Moonshine Memories   extremely well-bred 1st timer is trained well enough to be ready in her debut and draws the choosy Mr Smith......plenty of potential to be a good one especially with Callaghan at the helm

1  Crownstone   works are good but not great by Baffert standards.....but mom has tossed 10 winners from 11 starters and 2 Stakes winners.... and one of those winners was a Grade 1 winner.....that and many graduated at two

7  Dr. Ann

race 7    average clarity

2  Inordinate   been away since winning a Grade 3 fourteen grass race at SA on 22 April....but runs very well "fresh" and he is working the best of his career.....has done nothing but improve since Baltas took over from Chad Brown....and that is no easy task......should get a great trip from the 2 post and with 4 lbs less to carry than he has had to in his last three races

5  Itsinthepost   believe this five-year old needs a target to run at to fire his best......dueled on the front end in his last a Grade 1 at Mth at today's 11F distance and tired late............impressive since returning home from the 1 July race at Mth as he has been able to work 7 times.....hard not seeing this Mullins five-year old being a major player today

8  Ashleyluvssugar   ultra consistent Stakes runner won this race last year and shows up almost every time......she is rated as 3rd choice only because of a tendency to flatten out sometimes racing further than 10F

11  Hunt

race 8    above average clarity

2  Collected   6 for 6 lifetime on conventional dirt.....won his latest in stellar time and did it coping/pressing a solid pace......won so easily he likely exited the race in terrific shape....and his eye-popping work tab since supports the notion......I'll take the "now" horse everything over the superstar who tossed a "what in the H happened to him" in their last

8  Arrogate   worlds best horse ran an effort that wouldn't beat a good 25K claimer in his last......had a extremely off day or something amiss???? was his 1st ever on the Del Mar dirt....superstar has some ?'s to answer......interesting to see how it all plays out

3  Accelerate   just ran his lifetime best with the blinkers put on for the 1st time.....and he is a perfect 3 for 3 at Dmr......not out of the win picture by any means unless Arrogate makes a total rebound

7  Curlin Road

race 9    average clarity

10  Edwards Going Left   talk about improving with each and every start......should have won a state-bred stakes in his latest if not for one nasty trip.......three year old has an abundance of early speed but can win without the lead......Baze has options

11  Big League   doubt this three year old is capable of rating....but.....he can really fly early and that is what I think Desormeaux will do so as to clear all or most but the turn from his outside post.....nice history at Dmr (3 1 20)

8  Americanize   four year old did have a wide trip in his latest but still regressed some in his latest.....but he might have needed the start off of the 4 month layoff and if he did he should be a major player here 2nd out since switching barns to

3  Street Vision

race 10    below average clarity

2  Madam Dancealot   impressive 21 to 1 win to upset in a Grade 2 1st ever on the Dmr turf in her latest.....after breaking slowly she did nothing but run.......likely will need a clean trip to win today but has a good post for Theriot to get that accomplished

5  Con Te Partiro   another coming off of an upset win (20 to 1).......she beat 23 foes at Ascot convincingly in a straight turf mile.....and a Wesley Ward invader won yesterday's turf Stakes race despite a bad trip.....seems very dangerous in she handles the two turns better than she did last Fall at SA

11  Pacific Wind   lifetime best and a fit here was the only time she raced as far as today's 9F......and today we get a better turf rider.....such a deal

12  Beau Recall

Long-shot consideration:   8  Kathy's Song    getting good fast and appears to like the Dmr turf and/or her new trainer Richard Baltas....and look who is up.....Mr. Gary Stevens

race 11    average clarity

1  Meet and Greet  SCRATCHED OUT prolonged series of works and some of them are quite impressive for a filly state-bred 1st time starter.......and she sure is bred to have some early speed .......and with the weight break Roman might really fly with a good start out of the metal monster

3  Hope She Will   two lifetime starts aren't anything to write home about but since her latest on 24 June she is working as if Headley has tweaked something for the better....... as her a.m. work is vastly improved

8  Laynee   on the right end of the learning curve and retains Bejarano who is riding awfully good right now.......Mathias has struggled some at the meeting but might snatch his 2nd win here

4  Jabber Now

6  Powder

2  Hailey Rachele
