Del Mar for Friday 25 August 2017

1st card of the week that is on the plus side of average. Hope I'm right in my assessment.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

4  She'sluckythtway   circling wide was not a problem yesterday and that is what this filly seems likely to do today.....both lifetime wins were run off of short rest .......and that is the case today

2  Irish Dame   might be a good claim by trainer George Papaprodromou of a three-year old filly who is 3 for 5 on conventional dirt....and with the claim we get a rider upgrade to Desormeaux....such a deal

1  Sly Humor   has obvious health issues but takes a significant plunge in the claiming ranks.......Hollendorfer is ice-cold (by his lofty standards) and might be hungry for a win......or just dropping to lose......we will find out at about 3:32 pm pacific time

race 2    average clarity

2  Miss Boom Boom   fairly consistent sort including at today's one mile turf distance( 6 2 2 0)......has health issues but should be stout here if "right".......recent drills hint she is doing well enough to handle this soft looking group......we shall see

6  Space Cadet   3rd out after a break and facing softer.....jockey upgrade to Desormeaux who own two wins on this filly......might all add up to  visit to the circle of joy this afternoon for this Baltas four-year old filly

5  Tiz Adore   seems best on the Del Mar turf.......and she competes well when fresh......needs her best and might be up for it running fresh at Dmr

race 3    average clarity

7  Bank Walker   solid improvement in his 2nd lifetime endeavor running 2nd to a very nice winner and the strength of his effort was supported by a significant gap of more than 8L to 3rd.....reassuring 5F work since......bred fine to handle a brother team at the helm

1  Taranis    works say ready for this two-year old MSW 1st timer and Baffert is as good as anyone that I can think of at getting a youngster to perform well going a route in their our top choice we get another good rider/trainer combo

6  Ayacara   useful MSW debut and Prat sticks around for his 2nd start and 1st at a route......Keith Desormeaux (who also trains our top choice) is very good at getting two-year old runners to get a route......not totally out of the win picture here

8  Longden

race 4    average clarity

5  Rye Patch   just claimed by Baltas who is so good at getting a turf horse to improve 1st out after he takes over....and the recent 5F work just one week ago hints he has tweaked something for the better......and this gelding gets a signficant rider upgrade to Bejarano who got the most out of this fellow 6 and 7 races back despite not winning

2  Indygo   Ian Kruljac makes the most out of his limited starts and Del Mar is no exception where he has won 2 of 3 starts.....last two run on the grass for this 5 yr old (who was just claimed) fit fine.........switch to Van Dyke who is riding the turf quite well these days

9  Burger and Fries   badly in need of a drop and gets one today.....and a big a.m. work in awhile....hints the barn is all out today as they realize their colt might be in somebody else's barn after the race

4  Lazzam

race 5    average clarity

3  Camino de Estrella   significant layoff run in his latest as he popped his lifetime best in a sprint.....and he has been a better route horse....trainer has been cold at the meeting but might help relieve the stress with a win here

8  Thorpe d'Oro   after two solid route races to start his career with the blinkers on O'Neill took them off for a dismal 3rd start....wisely back on today and a switch to Roman and his 5 lbs break.....sure seems like a major player

2  Union Rebel   way too wide of a trip in latest.....would have won and graduated waving his cap to the crowd with a clean trip.......rider will be out to make amends.....but.....will he have as much horse to work with this afternoon....running lines hint maybe not.....thus placed as 3rd selection instead of top pick

7  Borg

Long-shot consideration:   5  Liberty Park   lone route on the dirt was his last race which way back in early April......the effort is quite a bit better than appears in print....but still he will need more today.....the impressive way he is training (way better than last winter) and the fact he is so well-bred makes for an interesting proposition.....and likely at a higher price than his 12 to 1 ML

race 6    below average clarity

7  II Segreto   way too wide of a trip hides a much improved effort 1st out following the Hess claim.......buddy Kent Desormeaux will be out to make amends.....step up in class suggests this gelding exited the race in good shape....and maybe even fitter......bred well to get the 11F

6  Royal Opera House   34 to 1 1st out in the U S of A hints this Dan Blacker runner wasn't fully cranked but still he ran well in an effort that is hidden to some extent......and his pedigree seems fine to handle the mini-marathon

1  Alsatian   bug boy has struggled in turf routes but has handled this fellow rather 5 lbs weight break might be extremely significant at such a long race especially with the added weight off for being a 3-year-old

2  Magical Mystery

race 7    average clarity

4  Mended   undefeated since the John Martin claim 8 races back......and he continues to step up and win and not only but crush his competion......and in his last he was able to stalk and win which he showed few signs of being able to do as he was winning opening up big leads....last at Dmr fits and today he carries 4 lbs less

8  Faithfully   best credentials in the race and not out of the win picture by any means....will stalk our top pick in all likelihood and won't be easy to hold off in the rider and trainer combo to boot

2  Motown Lady   did not embarrass himself whatsoever stepping up into a Grade 1 and running 4th.....that effort which was his 1st ever on the Dmr dirt fits well here and the cut back of 1/16th seems like a plus

3  Street Surrender

race 8    average clarity

9  Boss Move  solid effort in the 28 July version of this race which was run at one furlong further.......ran 2nd despite breaking slightly tardy and running 3 wide.....earned a solid for the given level Santucci  fig.......two reassuring drills since

8  Fly as a Falcon   nice forward move in 2nd lifetime start and her a.m. prowess since hints she might be up for another....if she is she has a shot at turning the tables on our top choice who beat her by 4 1/2L in their last

7  Luna's Empress   lone race run on 1 June was in the MSW ranks and she found that level a too tough.....returns in this low-level MC and with a work regiment that seems dangerous.....Molly Pearson usually does OK in S Cal but has struggled this summer....might begin to change that here

4  We Will Re Joyce

5  Dream of Eagles

2  Dovetail
