Del Mar for Saturday 26 August 2017

Two things of note today: We seldom give out three "long-shot consideration" plays on a given day but it was easy to do so today with all the large fields and with so many prices winning at Del Mar these days. Richard Baltas is our top choice in 5 races, 2nd choice in one race and 3rd choice in one race. Come on Richard to say the least!

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

7  Dream Police  might be in the bad race - good race- bad race mode and his effort two back seems very strong for this Baltas runner.....apprentice Laura Werner is 19% in routes

2  Real Big Deal   seems best at Del Mar and he likely won't get a chance to run on its surface for a couple of Kruljac will likely will have him as ready as he can get him today

6  Que Chistoso   alarming drop and he was a vet scratch on 19 July....he did race since and that effort fits fine if of course his physical issues don't get him during the running of today's race

1  Woodstock Memory

race 2    below average clarity

3  Empress Deelites   MC debut two back is very strong overcoming about 7 or 8 lengths of trip trouble to win........then she suspiciously dropped and ran about a dozen less of an effort......but since then she has rebounded in her a.m. work....and drops again.....believe she mounts a what degree seems to be the question mark

4  Lady Cloud   showed plenty of life at 8 furlongs (a distance which is further than she wants to go) with a very wide 2nd turn move and then predictably tired.....back to a sprint this afternoon with a little extra endurance put in.....dangerous sort

7  It's Not So Easy   dangerous conditioner with laid up drop downs like this three-year old filly who was last seen in mid January......and Miyadi convinces Prat and his agent to hop aboard

1  Mama's Sugar

race 3    below average clarity

1  Sheza Chattykat   terrific 46:4 B (yes breezing) work 9 days ago for this Baltas filly....1st on the grass with a so so pedigree for it....but.....if Baltas believes she will take to it that is good enough for little old me

5  G Q Covergirl   tired a turf route in latest and she appeared to handle the sod just fine but did not care for the two turns.......sprint today and she is 3 for 4 sprinting on the dirt....solid drill in preparation for this turf trainer in the D'A....very dangerous

4  Lat 'n Left   like our top choice her pedigree for the green doesn't jump off of the page........but her running lines hint that the abbreviated turf distance of 5F will be right up her alley if of course she takes to the turf....Stevens up for small barn......hmmm

3  Miss Loujean

Long-shot consideration:   6  Precious Dixie   powerful dirt race two back with top apprentice Roman up......that race would beat these if she can duplicate it on the grass and with a much less successful apprentice up......filly has broken sharply out of the metal monster in all 3 lifetime starts....that in itself might give the low % Fuentes a shot at an upset

race 4    below average clarity

8  True Royalty   believe the Sadler connections were quite surprised how well their filly ran in MSW her debut because she had zero support at the windows.....and she appears to have greatly benefited from the effort as she shows a blistering bullet 4F drill since....last is better than par for the level....and expecting more today

2  Fantastic Girl   double barell action from Sadler who trains our top choice........this expensive 1st time starter who was just bought at sale in March appears well worked and ready to roll

4  Secret Spice   just purchased at sale only 3 months ago so Baltas and company got a good look at what they were are up to snuff.....stout rider/trainer combo......trainer has been slightly chilly the last couple of weeks but I doubt that stays that way much longer

7  Exuberance

Long-shot consideration:   6  Curlin's Journey   numerous works for this Michele Dollase MSW 1ster.....and with many of the works hinting this two year old filly might fly early

race 5    average clarity

(AE's  13 and/or 14 have a shot if draw into the field)

4  Oh Man   Baltas just claimed this colt and he might have the trump card for her as the a.m. prowess since the claim is vastly improved.......and that seems significant as this filly has hit the board in all 3 lifetime races.......come on Sashaaaaaa

2  Time for Cioppino   rider upgrade and drops into maiden claiming for the 1st time following 4 races at the MSW level.......should be a major factor in the outcome of this race

1  Handsome Swede   last might have been the MSW gimme to drop and go and keep the claiming vultures at bay to some degree.....trainer is about 20% win with such a maneuver

6  Lucky Romano

race 6    average clarity

6  Skelton Pass   quite the improvement 1st time with the blinkers....two very reassuring works since.....last fits and the cut back in distance appears to be a trainer/rider combo the last couple of months....hard not to like

3  Conquest Typhoon   4 for 7 at today's turf distance......0 for 13 at other turf distances....and this Miller five-year old should have plenty of endurance when push comes to shove coming of an 11 furlong grass race where he ran 2nd.......Prat wisely stays put

7  Eckersley   just like our top selection this fellow sure woke up with the blinkers put on in his last.....five year old can really motor late and that is often a good thing at Del Mar

4  Oregon

race 7    above average clarity

4  Gato Del Oro   last two racing endeavors fit just fine at today's higher level and his a.m. prowess since his last hints he will likely run his best lifetime race in start number four today

7  Battle of Midway   colt is 3 for 3 when not competing in Grade 1 or Grade 2 races.....might have considered him as top selection if Hollendorfer wasn't so in 4 for 64 so far at the Dmr meeting

6  Klimt   very dangerous sort if Sherman has him fit enough with only one race for this colt since November......the three-year old is a perfect 2 for 2 at Del Mar winning a Grade 1 and a Grade 2 both by daylight

race 8    above average clarity

2  Run Like Rhett   nice 1st on the grass in latest and the extra 1/16th should be to his liking....and his trainer Blake Heap is having a good meet and year with limited starters

5  Popyhowuspelcupcak   three year old gelding has done little wrong in two lifetime races both on the sod......and like our top selection he should love the extra 1/16th of sod to work with......Raffy wisely takes the mount back

6  Tyler's Tek   somewhat short fig wise of what our top two selections have significant rider upgrade today can make up for that.....maybe

4  Kona Dreams

race 9    average clarity

10  Giant Expectations   seems best in one turn races.......and his two turn effort in his last isn't too shabby.....but what really catches my eye is how well he is training....believe he is sitting on lifetime best

1  Moe Candy   brutal trip in the Grade 1 Bing Crosby....that effort and her previous effort fit fine here....but she has something to prove going as far as seven furlongs as she flattened some running as far as 6 1/2 furlongs twice....dangerous but with a ? mark

4  Silent Bird   Glatt is dynamite getting sprint horse's to run "fresh" including this fellow......2 for 3 at 7F and one of the wins is a fit at today's higher level........away 5 1/2 months but all cranked up and ready to roll

11  Denman's Call

Long-shot consideration:  3  Mr. Hinx   shows up every time in sprint races dirt or turf as in 5 for 5.......last at today's 7F distance and at Dmr is quite good .....he likely needs only a length or two more this afternoon to be a major player and at a price.......7 lbs less to carry will help get him there.....trainer has had a very nice Del Mar meeting

race 10    average clarity

10  Lovely Anzi   quite the positive switch in trainers and riders for this six-year-old (still a maiden) gelding who is now in the Baltas barn......owns plenty of early speed for Bejarano to get on over by the 1st turn......recent couple of drills hint Baltas has improved him plenty.....we shall see

1  Bold Papa   double barrel action from the Baltas barn who also trains our top pick......Baltas is dynamite with beaten favorites and that is the case for this fellow.....good post and one of the top grass riders on the grounds up

4  Tatar   nice forward move in his latest and seems highly likely to save ground and be in the mix from the get go......not out of the win picture in this race by any means

6  Chidamac

7  Bottle Service

8  Well Developed
