Santa Anita for Friday 27 October 2017

Take note that there are 22 races on Saturday and Sunday and the Del Mar starts on Wednesday. So, in order to not cut into my study time the comments will be cut back for 5 of the next 7 racing days excluding the 2 Breeders Cup days of course.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

7  Inscom   very firm turf course in his last for sure but still 133:3 is an outstanding time for any two-year old ......graduation day is at hand for this $850K purchase if he can repeat the effort

3  Jungle Warfare

4  Erotic   beat more than 1/2 the field at GG in his debut which was also at one mile on the grass in a MSW affair....will need to move forward quite a bit today but Mandella takes the blinkers off the 2nd time starter.....and that is one of the world-class trainer's better moves......and look who is up today....Mr turf terror Gary Stevens

2  Alternate Rhythm

race 2    above average clarity

5  Country Fast   dull MSW debut off of a so so work since are solid and long in preparation for his 1st at a route.....drops into MC......sure appears like a sprint gimme to drop and go in a route

9  Zippy Groom   both lifetime races are par like for today's lower level......and I like that one was on the dirt (in a sprint) and one was a route grass race..... handled dirt and handled a route albeit a grass route....doubt route dirt is a hindrance

1  On the Right   seemingly slipping in form....but 1st time gelding and drops some more......might rebound some.....maybe enough to compete at the M230K level

4  Starship Chewy

race 3    above average clarity

5  Family Code   Morey has had a nice go of it in S Cal this year and he might keep the good times rolling with this gelding who likes the SA dirt and also today's distance......that and he gets a significant rider upgrade especially when you take in account the 5 lbs weight break

2  Morgan S.  last was dull but his debut two races back was not.....that and Hendricks is deadly with 7 to 12 weeks layoffs like today.......believe there is about an 80% chance a rebound will occur

1  California Clone   three nice lifetime races the last of which was on 9 October well as if he is ready but his trainer is only 1 for his last 17 with layoffs of 3 months or more....then again Bejarano stays put

4  Overcome

race 4    average clarity

4  Weiden   on the improve with every start.......1st at a route but few in here own as good a pedigree as his to handle one.....last time Moger used Pereira it lead to a $19.20 winner

9  Craft Brew   strong move forward to a lifetime best in his last breaking slowly and racing way way too wide......earned an adjusted for trouble fig that is 2 or 3 lengths better than par for today's lower level......same surface......same distance.......just need a much better ride from Roman today

1  Charming Ruler   33 to 1 and then 122 to 1 in 2 MSW sprints has "just exercise" written all over it......sprint-sprint-route scenario and drops....likely a difference horse what degree is the question mark

3  Davka

race 5    above average clarity

5  Shazara   lifetime best by far was the only time this mare competed at 10 furlongs on the turf with the blinkers on.......the race was also at SA and disguised by a brutal trip.......mare does tend to find trouble but T C Baze has been able to nurse 2 of 4 decent trips out of her.....lookout if he gets a 3rd today

3  Luck De   good position seems very likely up on or close to the lead saving ground in what looks like a race somewhat set for those up close early

9  Heavenly Thought   4 lifetime grass races led to one win....and it was at the furthest turf distance (9 furlongs) that she has competed at so far....she owns a pedigree that screams "the longer the better".....10F today

6  Ginga

race 6    below average clarity

6  Allianna   those that have already run so far haven't shown much and this Miller 1st time starter impresses me the most of all the 1st pick-a-rue

11  Cosita Mia   not your typical powerhouse works for a nicely bred Baffert 1st timer but I always like when the trainer puts copious gate drills into a 1ster......... which is the case here with 5 gate works showing

4  Pacific Strike   decent work tab for this Eurton two-year old filly 1st time starter and it might be telltale that her best work showing is her lone gate work at SA........dangerous sort

9  Dream Tree

Long-shot consideration:   8  Haig's Factor   Mac isn't much with 1st time starters in the twilight of his illustrious career but the works for this filly are too good to ignore

race 7    below average clarity

2  Dukes Up   seems like a decent claim by Bonde and he gets a great spot for his new shooter as he is (4 3 1 0) at the distance and 2 for 3 at Santa Anita....that and he makes a major rider upgrade

8  City Steel   consistent sort and I doubt that changes today off of a solid preparatory 5F work........would have been top choice if it wasn't for his strong tendency to race wide especially from a post like post 8

3  Donji   seems highly likely to get a nice mid pack ground saving trip thru at least turn 1....and that is 1/2 the battle.....Pratt's in a mini slump but might feel a little better after this race

6  Dadtaughtmewell

race 8    average clarity

9  Zipman    visually showed he can run on the grass in his MSW debut at Dmr at 5F....then he ran a very strong better than par dirt sprint in his 2nd liftime start.......seems poised for a big race down the SA hill......Bejarano wisely stays put

8  Starting Bloc   Mandella is low percentage with 1st time starters but this colt is working as if he is ready...... and....... mom has already tossed 4 turf winners from 7 starters

2  Impression   decent 1st on the turf in a 5F race at Del Mar on the 1st day of September......should be a factor today unless he dislikes the the unique configuration of the SA hill grass course

7  Thorpe d'Oro

4  Langham

10  Avalanche
