Santa Anita for Saturday 28 October 2017

Take note that there are 22 races on Saturday and Sunday and highly anticipated Del Mar meet starts on Wednesday. So, in order to not cut into my study time the comments will be cut back for 5 of the next 7 racing days excluding the 2 Breeders Cup days of course.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    below average clarity

8  Zuzanna   appreciates very firm turf and should get that today......last which was the 1st out following the claim appears to be a gimme of sorts.......a.m. work since hints this is not another one......owns 5 turf wins whereas the field combined only has 5 wins.....9F is a concern

7  Cynthiana   very much acts as if 1 1/8th miles of turf is a won't be for many in here......worked well prior to his last and once again has trained well since

1  Pistol Packin Rose

5  Goseecal

race 2    average clarity

7  Lipster   trainer Jorge Periban has had a tough year but is overdue for a win.....latest is very strong......improved work since.......same or possibly better seem likely today

2  Desert Domination   last is decent considering today's lower level.....but this two-year old might need a little more today .........1st time racing as a gelding might provide it

6  Skagit River

8  Ridgefield Rocket

race 3    below average clarity

1  Crayon   three bears story seems apropos for in one mile of turf might be a little too far......and......5 furlongs of grass might be a little too short......6 1/2 furlongs appears..... jussssst right.....that is of course if he handles the unusual configuration of the SA hill grass course

2  Salty Sapity   two-year old has been compromised by racing wide in her races but she has had outside posts.....2 post today......might save a little ground and with Stevens at the controls.....interesting turnaround potential if she does

6  Dramatic Victory

10  Lori's Attitude

Long-shot consideration:   3  Mag the Mighty   lifetime best and disguised by a bad trip was his lone race down the hill and it was MSW debut......flattened out in next two starts which were turf routes....should welcome the cut back in distance

race 4    below average clarity

6  Willing to Travel   likes to race wide but the small field should keep him from racing too wide like he has many times in his career including his latest where he ran very wide and still almost won......trainer likes what he saw as he steps his five-year old up a couple of levels

2  Saint Dermot   Glatt and company can't drop this diminishing 6 yr old fast enough.....but....his last sure fits if it didn't take its toll on him.....that and he seems to only appreciate the SA main track and nowhere Glatt and company might be all out today because it will be a long time until he can enter at SA again

4  Tisdale

1  Jonny's Choice

race 5    average clarity

3  Irish Freedom   on the improve with every start and his latest sure fits at today's higher level...... and....... the strength of the effort is disguised somewhat......the race was run off of 4 months rest.......2 1/2 months rest today....... and works that say........ready

2  Top ot the Game   Cerin has been firing on all cylinders at the SA meeting easily owning the highest win percentage of any traier and might keep the good times rolling here with this laid up alw runner who is training like he is meant and ready and deserving at a shot in a small Stakes race......3 for 3 at SA on the dirt.....0 for 8 everywhere else......needs to win now

4  Hoppertunity

6  Curlin Rules

race 6    average clarity

7  Lake Time   three-year old filly showed that she can handle the turf in a route race on the sod 2 races back.....then in her next start a dirt sprint she ran a very solid time for the given day and did so running wide......definitely seems better suited to sprint races so she should have plenty of potential to fire a big effort 1st time sprinting on the sod

6  Joe'sgoldenholiday   O'Neill was cold coming into this week and that is over now as he is red-hot and getting to the winners circle with some big prices.......yesterday he won with a horse cutting back in distance in a race down the hill....same scenario here

2  Phantom Proton

11  Painting Corners

Long-shot consideration:    9  Zero Zee   laid up since January but returns 1st time in the D'A's barn and 1st time running on Lasix.....that and she is proven fresh winning her MSW 12 Aug 16 in a turf print at the tough Saratoga meeting

race 7    average clarity

7  Haulin' Freight   hot trainer this week in O'Neill (notorious for winning in bunches) with a combined 4 wins on Thurs & Friday adds blinkers to the equipment for this colt who has always trained well but not preformed too hot.......that has a decent chance at changing today

8  What's Inside   bet hard in his MC debut and would have won if not for a bad trip......4 works since.......not crazy about the change in jockeys or would have been top pick-a-rue

6  Treasure Hunter

5  Mr. Fullerton

race 8    average clarity

4  He's Stylish   very solid work regiment for this D'Amato 1st timer including an eye-popping 58:1H at Slr five 5 weeks has tossed two winners from two starters.....trainer is a decent 15% win with his last 125 MSW 1st timers and with a solid return on your money for such a "big time S Cal barn"

5  McKinzie   impressive work tab for this Baffert 1st time starter and when the trainer uses Mike Smith on a MSW 1st timer they are even more likely to win at 1st asking...... which...... is saying something as prolific as Baffert is with 1st timers

6  Shivermetimbers

9  Blue Ox

race 9    average clarity

4  Bowies Hero   three-year old colt has never been sharper and I sure like the rider upgrade for a grass race and the 2 lbs less to carry today.......let's hope that like the David Bowie song Heroes....."we can beat them if just for day"

6  Sharp Samurai   3 for 3 at the distance on the turf and 2 of the wins were at SA.......the only reason that I didn't place this stout grass horse on top was that his a.m. preparation is not as impressive as it has been in the past

5  Just Howard

2  Cowboy Culture

Long-shot consideration:   11  Ann Arbor Eddie   Cal-bred has displayed plenty of talent on the dirt and AW but I have been waiting for him to run on the grass as I believe his pedigree for it is very good and that the grass might end up being his favorite surface.....if so lookout here

race 10    average clarity

8  La Galy   needs ample time between starts and trainer Jaime Gomez shows patience and gives it to her.......and by my book Gomez is at his best with relatively fresh runners like this filly....last 3 endeavors on the SA dirt (3 1 1 1)..... and..... the win was by 9 lengths

10  Besides the Point   Bob Hess has quietly had a good Fall meeting at SA........filly is 3 for 5 at Santa Anita including a nice win in her latest......and Hess is solid getting a given runner to win back to back races

1  Spinyatta

6  Todos Santos

race 11    average clarity

8  Well Developed   ran a very strong MSW debut back on August 26th running 2nd despite a bad trip......if he returns the same horse this afternoon he sure appears to be the one to beat even with a so so trip......and very tough if of course he gets a good trip by Van Dyke this time around

5  Save Ground   three-year old colt has the post to live up to his name and if he does save ground thru at least the 1st turn he should be in good position to finish well like he did when running 3/4 length beaten 3rd in his MSW debut

3  Gosofar

1  Bold Papa

9  Copper Wind

10  Chidamac
