Santa Anita for Sunday 29 October 2017

Take note that there are 22 races on Saturday and Sunday and the highly anticipated Del Mar meet starts on Wednesday. So, in order to not cut into my study time the comments will be cut back for all the days except the 2 Breeders Cup days.

Seems like a good card today and also on opening day Wednesday at Del Mar.

Best of luck as always!

race 1    average clarity

5  Kristi's Copilot   lifetime best grass race was his latest race and it was the 3rd out following the Machowsky claim........Machowsky might have discovered something positive that this gelding responds to......yet to hit the board in 3 races down the hill but the last time down it was a solid effort fig wise and it was a key race.....today's rider Joe Tamalo rode that day and also was up for his impressive last race

8  Tristan's Trilogy   1 for 2 down the majestic Santa Anita hill grass course and the race came with the cut back in turf distance from one mile to 6 1/2F.......the race was run with 3 weeks rest coming off a 2nd place finish.......2 weeks since finished 2nd at one mile on 14 Oct.......hmmmm

2  Allaboutmike

9  Burning Brightly

race 2    average clarity

4  Xten   very strong wide near win 2nd two back in his MSW debut......then in his 2nd start he had little chance to strut his stuff running wide on a rail bias day.....remains very sharp in the a.m.......T C Baze best get it "right" this go around or might lose a mount with plenty of upside potential

3  Canadian Game   also ran wide in the same race (on the rail biased day) as our top choice.....blinkers on and an improved recent 6F work......red hot trainer all of a sudden and an equipment change.....that is a dangerous proposition for his opposition

2  Instilled Regard

1  Draft Pick

race 3    average clarity

3  Red Livy   owns very solid early foot down the SA hill grass course where she has a win and a 2nd in three races.......great spot for Baze to slow things down on the lead as he did in her one win on the hill as there is very few with any early speed in this field

9  Midnight Swinger   Glatt is 20% win with his last 120 3rd out following a layoff which is the case here......lone race down the hill was run turf mile to hill sprint off of 7 weeks rest....same maneuver today this time off of only 3 weeks rest.....seems very much a factor in the outcome of this race

10  Velvet Jones

1  Li'l Grazen

Long-shot consideration:   5  Royal Astronomer   races 2 back and 4 back both were dirt races and fit here if of course this filly can produce similar in her 1st on the sod......pedigree for the green carpet seems OK....and if she does handle it she might be in perfect stalk position in a race that favors those up close early on paper

race 4    above average clarity

4  Plane Lucky   much-needed drop into claiming........( 5 2 2 0) at Santa Anita on the dirt.........last time she raced at 5 1/2 furlongs was way back in May 2016 and she won by more than 7L....rather sure Baltas would love to win the training title........a superfecta of reasons to consider this filly

7  Pica    filly does well (usually her very best) when given ample time between starts and Eddie Truman shows patience and gives it to her.....1 for 2 at today's distance and 5 wins and 5 2nds in 18 conventional dirt races

3  Dissension

1  Run Sophia Run

race 5    above average clarity

1  Texas Wedge   back to reality after a run in a Grade 1 affair following his MC50K debut......that debut fits very solidly in today's starter alw race......Miller seems to like to leg up Paco Lopez when he is in town and Paco is more than capable of holding his own vs. the top S Cal riders

2  Utah Ute  won for the same optional 40K tag in his latest (at Santa Anita at 1/2 furlong further) and earned a number that is a little better than par for today.....and unless you are a touring pro golfer par is "good"

4  Get Em Up Scout

3  Neighborhood Bully

race 6    average clarity

3  Otseau de Guerra   lone lifetime race run on very firm (quick) turf the kind we see at SA was his lifetime best and run at the prestigious Sar meet.......1st time racing for M McCarthy who is having his best year of his life.....and the works since arriving in S Cal hint he can keep the good time rolling today......and the connections coaxed Gary Stevens to ride

2  New Dancer   big wake up race two back and then tossed a clunker.......we need that effort/energy she ran in the race two back and of course she will need to handle grass.......her pedigree is much better for the turf than the dirt......dangerous and maybe a decent price

6  Starting Bloc

11  Tule Fog

Long-shot consideration:   4  Williston Dude   both races run last fall on the dirt are good......so........ if his 3rd start which was run off of a layoff was nothing more than a tune-up lookout as he has a good pedigree to handle the grass

race 7    average clarity

(AE 12  Let My Flatter You  has a shot if she draws in from the AE list)

4  Tiffany Diamond   lifetime best by far was the only time in 3 races that this Machowsky three-year old filly raced on fast rated dirt.......1st at a route today but owns a pedigree that in all likelihood should handle one......trainer has been very reliable in 2017

2  Took the High Road   last appears to be a route turf tightener in a protected MSW affair to muscle up and be fit and ready for her 2nd start in a MC30K.......Ellis is often at his most dangerous MSW to maiden claiming and 2nd time at a route

9  Lovely Linda

1  Hope She Will

race 8    average clarity

6  Black Tie 'n Tails   Miller five-year old gelding has run very well fresh twice in the past.....so consider her ready today off of the long hiatus from racing......Elliot/Miller won their last two when teaming up

9  One I'm Running To   2 for 2 at today's distance and (5 2 2 0) at SA on the main track.......meetings leading ride up.......that and Glatt is very tough on the drop

1  Cal Cal Li Gowchis

3  Yo La Tengo

race 9    below average clarity

3  Beautiful Becca   never sharper in the a.m........might be the most likely to get a good trip with her good post and tactical speed......2 for 3 on the SA turf ..........and last but not least Hollendorfer is dynamite in developing young fillies

1  Kathy's Song   solid route turf race in a Grade 1 three races back having to check hard or would have been close at the wire......nice sprint prep for today's G3........and like our top pick his jock should be able to work out a good trip

6  Storm the Hill

4  Tapped

Long-shot consideration:   10  Reverse   1st time racing in the Baltas barn with a grass horse has led to a few upsets in the past and that includes the trainer taking over some grass runners from top ten (nation wide) turf trainers........here he taking over a horse from an average trainer at best......hmmmm

race 10    below average clarity

5  Stealth Drone   claimed by Mulhall in late July and has been away since.....but returns with stellar work regiment that has "meant and ready" written all over it.......likes the SA dirt....and likes the distance......such be a major player

10  Marley's Freedom   nice effort 1st time running for Hess and this filly did it off of a 10+ month layoff.......7 works since her 4 Sept. 29 to 1 upset......like the break she got to recover.....filly has a good shot here if she can fire another race like her last

4  Bowie

9  Ruby Trust

race 11    average clarity

3  Bella Style   nice improvement in her 2nd lifetime endeavor and the effort is somewhat disguised.......sharp 4F work a week ago in preparation for her 1st on the turf......very solid pedigree for it......retains Bejarano.......plenty of potential this afternoon for another move in the desired direction

10  Carrie's Success   two nice 2nd place finishes in MSW affairs on the dirt to start her career.......and like our top selection she owns a good pedigree to take to the green carpet......and she is trained by one of S Cal's top turf trainers

1  An Eddie Surprise

9  X S Gold

7  Fantastic Chloe

12  Lucky At the Bay
